Poseidon guesthouse, together with accompanying Konoba Tratinska on island of Žirje is a really great place to stay, if you know what you're getting yourself into. First of all the staff is really, really nice. It starts with the hostess Sanja who will welcome you warmly and do her best to make sure you're feeling like at home. She and her husband Marino can cook a mean meal that spans from standard meaty things like čevapčiči and a really nice steak to either bought or, more often, freshly caught fish. Food and drinks are served by the owners' son Tomislav and a waiter Filip who both are quick on their feet, professional but manage to find time for casual banter. Guesthouse itself is located in a bay where multiple sailboats and motoryachts come to anchor daily. The guesthouse/konoba has a private dock that doubles as a mini beach. There are also several loungers available for your suntanning pleasure. If so inclined, you can quite happily spend a whole day there, every now and then taking a few steps to the water to cool yourself off and then come back and continue lounging to your hearts content. All the while the staff will more than gladly be providing drinks of your choice, so you don't get dehydrated :-) Water in the bay is usually eerily calm. By this I mean that you may get a feeling that there's a sheet of glass there and not water at all. It's an immense joy getting up early in the morning, before the breakfast, and going for a swim. What are the downsides? Well, it depends on what you may consider a downside. Some of the things that follow may actually appeal to you tremendously. First of all the island is really small (about 10 km along the long axis). This may mean to you that there may not be much to do or it could mean that you can really take your time and explore it thoroughly during your stay there. There is only one bar on the island and only one grocery store. But chances are you might not actually need either. After that you should be aware that the guesthouse/konoba has no constant electrical power. They have a generator that typically runs at least 4 hour a day, from about 18h onward until the close of business that day. If you want to get your phone charged, you can do it during that time. While this may sound like a bother, it can actually be a tremendous opportunity to not only unplug your devices but also yourself. Power lines should be coming to the guesthouse in the near future and then this will not be an issue anyway. The result of no constant electrical power is that there's no cooling in the rooms. I've spent there a couple of weeks when it was in the low 30s during the day and always managed to fall asleep. Sometimes you just have to wait until about midnight for the air to cool down sufficiently. This should also be a thing of the past, when the power lines will be connected.
Overall this was a great find for me and my wife. It was just what we needed to recharge our batteries. And the lack of electrical power actually helped with...
Read more😊: Excellent location and wonderful accommodation (we had a suite, not rooms!). Spacious apartment with a beautiful terrace overlooking the entire bay. The hosts are friendly and very helpful, the accommodation is full of small details that conjure homeliness. The apartment is scheduled for renovation this year, which will further improve the feeling of well-being. The kitchen contains the essentials for cooking your own meals.. 😢: If you think staying without air conditioning is a mission impossible, don't choose this island for your vacation. The accommodation is not suitable for people with limited mobility, even the access to the sea (just 8m) is not suitable for disabled people. There is a restaurant in the house, don't expect silence before midnight. If you are disturbed by the voices of the sailboats in the bay, then you will...
