Golden Bay Hvar — Hotel in Grad Hvar

Positives: Beautiful bay, breakfast was good.||Negatives: Inattentive and very lazy staff - did not greet us on arrival despite watching us arrive (only the owner helped us with luggage and said hello). There were no acknowledgements of us at any point during the stay and any interactions seemed forced from their side as if they were at pains to provide any assistance. Every single time we went past the main eating / lounge area, there were at least 3 members of staff who would not even look up and were smoking, drinking and on their phones.||The first day we arrived, we unpacked and went for a peaceful sit by the sea - we had to ask the staff to turn down the loud music in the lounge area and then two members of staff went to play football right behind the seating area making loud noises for a good hour - so much for peaceful relaxation! The ball was kicked near us several times and the staff went diving into the water many times to retrieve the ball. On the second day by the sea one of the staff put 2 buckets full of dead fish into the closed bay - not something you’d want to swim near!||We watched an old man guest carry heavy suitcases to the car with 3 male staff watching while on their phones, smoking and drinking their coffee. When they said goodbye to all the staff, one of the staff members was mocking them in a high pitched voice behind their backs.||I would strongly recommend the owners change staff - in particular the man behind the bar / waiter.||Blocked drains meant the bathroom was always very smelly. The room entrance was also littered with midges that often made it into the room. I must have swatted at least 20 in the room!||Room did not have a sea view as paid for and was definitely not soundproofed as advertised - we could hear the apartment above very noisily from 7am.||No room cleaning service throughout the stay - this is a standard for a “hotel” service.||The room had been very strongly sprayed with air freshener to mask an underlying smoking smell - the room was definitely not “non smoking” as advertised.||We had to ask for soap for the room as there was none provided as standard!||The deckchairs and mattresses need replacing - some of them were literally falling apart and were uncomfortable.||The entrance road was a very narrow gravel road - be careful with car tyres!||All in all the room rate is double what it should be. Would not recommend that anyone chooses to stay here until a proper hotel manager and better staff are employed. This was our fourth hotel stay in Croatia and the worst by some margin.||Not a pleasant end to an otherwise wonderful...

My wife and two teenage kids went at the beginning of this week, cut short by Covid! ||I have read a couple of reviews from last year and was slightly surprised by the negative ones! The staff were great, very attentive and welcoming and the location is fabulous! The food is lovely as long as you are relaxed about what you get - ie what they have! Not for the fussy eater I guess ||So it gets a five, and I am normally fairly critical ||I would say a couple of things as follows: it’s a public beach so there were quite a few people including the staff who enjoyed the water, so it’s not tranquil! ||It’s an open restaurant, so anyone can pitch up with a boat and a big group - which happened - needed some earphones that day - but actually made it a bit more fun for a few hours as it is remote! ||Quite a few people hanging around smoking right next to the sun beds. But to be fair a simple ask to move was sufficient as most Croatians are lovely people and very helpful ||Our room needed shade on its balcony, lovely spot, just needed somewhere to sit away from the sun - all the others seemed...
