It’s a 15 minute boat trip from Rovinj to the Island. The boat leaves the hotel on the hour for Rovinj and leaves the Rovinj old town/harbour area to return on the half hour. Its stops at midnight. On first arrival they load your cases onto the boat and once on the island they are taken to reception for you. We had an inside standard room on the 2nd floor (2727) looking out onto the tennis courts. The room was some distance from reception but there are plenty of lifts and once you get your bearings it wasn't a problem. Not worth paying extra for a sea view as there is so much to do we just slept in the room and didn't use the balcony The room was spotlessly cleaned each day. The room had a safe, TV, hair dryer and basic toiletries provided. No tea making facilities etc in the room but we took our own kettle and cups and got milk at breakfast to put in the room fridge each day. The staff at the hotel are wonderful. They are young, polite, cheerful and efficient. We had a small maintenance issue with the shower one evening and it was fixed in less than an hour following our report to reception. Breakfast is buffet style and Fried Eggs, bacon, Sausage (German style) baked beans, etc are available. There are plenty of healthy choices but my only complaint is that the orange juice whether fizzy or still orange was terrible. It’s made from powder through a dispensing machine and it’s disgusting. Lots of people drinking Apple juice instead. Evening meal was buffet style starting at 6.30 pm through to 9.30pm. A good tip is to go later to avoid the crowd and we found 8.30pm to be best. You get unlimited red wine/white wine and beer with your evening meal and I found the red wine and the beer to be good. You are welcome to sit there and drink as much as you want if you wish. Some reviewers have moaned about the selection of dishes at the evening buffet but I was surprised at the range and quality. Most nights there was a good selection of fish, pork, chicken and beef dishes with plenty of pasta dishes, vegetables and potatoes. Pizza, Chips, Salad etc was plentiful. There are plenty of activities to do on the island, at a cost of course. Bar prices are on the high side A basic gin and tonic was £7.29 (60 Kuna). Draft local beer (0.5l) or a bottle of the local honey beer (0.33l) was £3.50. The two things I was most impressed with, was the free hotel WIFI which had probably the best bandwidth and range I have ever experienced at any hotel. You could get a good connection in the outdoor pool and terrace areas and anywhere in the hotel including the bedrooms. Downloading the Telegraph each day took less than a minute… a joy on holiday. The second thing was the large number of sunbeds and umbrellas available for the guests... no need to rush down before breakfast to deposit your towel on a bed.

The public areas, pools, bars and restaurants were gorgeous and of high standard, I would expect. The food, which was different every day, was tasty...great choice even for a fuss pot like myself. We were half board. The room (double, inland view, top floor, room 379, see pics for the view from our balcony) was ok. Being totally honest, a little small and compared to the rest of the hotel, a little tired. Saying that, it was spotlessly clean and entirely functional. It did lack a kettle in the room but did have a small fridge. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels given. The free hourly boat to and from the island to Rovinj was brill. The island itself is lovely. If you want peace, then there is plenty of places to be alone. Sun beds and benches are dotted all around both islands and are free to use. If you want to be more active then, again, plenty of activities there for you. We did cycling, kayaking and archery. We also did the trip to Venice. We booked it ourselves. If you go with tui, then I would recommend booking with them, it's about the same price but you get a minibus service to the dock. We had to walk 10 mins. Venezia lines were amazing. They know their stuff. They have packages for the day that they will sell you on the boat. 27euro each for the gondola ride. You get put into a group of six for this. 30euro each for a 45 min taxi boat back to the ferry. We did both of these. They also do lunch for 20euros each and a boat trip to St Marc's square. The best bit which was free, was the talk they give you when you get to the square. The knowledge of these guides helped us understand Venice more. We were not disappointed at all by this hotel at all. We will definitely be back. Thank you hotel istra for the making our birthdays more special with the sparkling rosé and cupcakes....a lovely touch.

The hotel and island are great. I actually thought it would be bigger than it is. The 2 islands are connected by a concrete bridge. I would classify this as a resort hotel - maybe like an all inclusive would be in the Caribbean - but it’s not all inclusive. Everything on the island is owned by Maistra including the restaurants. The standard rooms are small but adequate, and the AC could not keep on on the 3rd floor. The cost during our stay was a bit steep overall for value to us. The restaurants were mediocre with the pizza and pasta place probably being the best actually. Will leave more detailed reviews for these spots on the map entry for them. Unless you ferry over to Rovinj, you’re stuck with only the few options on the island for food and drink, and like I said they are all Maistra so it’s a lot of the same under a different veil. The pools are good, but also odd you only get a single towel. The public can ferry over to the island and seem to have full access to everything too including beach chairs. Not an issue most days but weekend was crowded is all. The walking path around the 2 islands was great. With benches all over. We enjoyed the nature a lot on the islands. There is live music later each night and that was excellent. Staff was great everywhere we went. This would be perfect for folks w kids, good for couples, but there are probably some better options out there too - including staying across the water and ferrying over for a small fee instead for a day.

So this holiday was a bit of an experiment for us. I use a wheelchair so we normally go to familiar flat resorts like in the Canaries. I knew this area and hotel would have the odd challenge but decided to give it a go!||We picked the Island Hotel Istra as liked the novelty of being on our own island. Also, importantly I had a very positive experience on the phone with them before booking, where they advised me on the best room and reassured me about getting around the hotel. We booked the executive suite as we have two grown up children, wanted to be together, and the space was great for an adult family...the boys had their own room and we had ours. As a wheelchair user it was tight but worked, note tho that my chair is only 15". I can also manage a couple of steps with support. You would not be able to get around all sides of the bed otherwise but I knew this after talking with reception first. There was also a largish lip to get on to the balcony. The hotel may have been able to provide a little ramp but I didn't worry about asking. The bathroom in this suite was not accessible (again I was made aware of this before booking) but I did request a shower stool, and this appeared within 10 minutes. We were on the 2nd floor and the view was amazing...out over the sea towards Rovinj. We thought the buffet breakfast and evening meal was great with lots of choice....it does, as other reviewers have said, get a little hectic at certain times but we never had a problem finding a table, and the crowds quickly thinned to nothing by 7.30/ 8pm in the evening. ||The ferry to and from the island has a rolling gangplank that comes down on to the concrete jetty with a kerbstone like drop. I was able to stand with help from hubby and boat staff to step up on to ramp and then it had strong handrails either side. You would not be able to just roll on to this with a chair, even popping a wheelie because of the way it free rolls with the movement of the waves. My kids then rolled the empty chair behind me, which fitted on the gang plank. If you can't stand/step for a moment this could be tricky but the boat crew never rushed me so it went pretty smoothly. Once aboard there was plenty of room to park up in my chair inside the cabin. ||The hotel was pretty reasonable for accessibility....there are ramps and lifts, though only one lift to get down to the bottom floor with the dining area, so this sometimes needed a short wait as it was often full...but there was a disabled toilet at dining level, which was the same level as the pool just a 10m walk away...you have to go back into the dining area from the pool patio (moving a lightweight plant pot or two which was easy) but the staff never minded me doing this and often helped me. Otherwise, the only direct pathway from the hotel to the pool bizarrely had ramps all the way down....except at the bottom where there were two random steps after them all at the bottom?! It was actually fine though...we found the right route using the lift! Using a wheelchair I expect there to be challenges, and part of the fun is trying to get around them!|The pools were immaculate and have ramps between them (depending on your level of strength you may need help to get up them), and the paving is lovely and smooth...so I could happily 'bumshuffle' across it without getting grazed! As someone else mentioned there was no pool hoist or ramp point to get in to the water that I could find, but they allow pool inflatables (I use a swim ring to stay afloat) and the water was flush with the edge which helped with sliding in. The outdoor pool doesn't open until 9am and while we were here in mid July, very slowly fills so there was no rush to get to the pool to find a lounger. We think because there are many loungers around the sea, it takes the pressure off the pool area so it always seemed pleasantly quiet. We never tried the indoor pool.|We also managed to get around the island perimeter paths in my chair. They are covered in fine white angular gravel, but it's mostly a very thin layer and (as an active wheelchair user) fine to roll on even with small 4" front castors. There were a couple of stony or slightly steeper short lengths of path but I had my family with me to give me an extra push or help me brake, so it could be a challenge depending on your own level of strength. We managed to get to all the other restaurants and bars with my chair (we didn't try the lovely posher restaurant through the church building - La Serra), and the path connecting the two islands was smooth concrete and easy to travel on. I didn't attempt to get into the sea...there were only concrete steps and it was very rocky everywhere so knew I couldn't get over them to get to the water. I did spot a steep concrete ramp but It looked too hairy, and definitely not one to attempt on a chair 😆! It was still really nice to sit and look out over the water though. |The staff were lovely, and helped make our stay a...

We are a family of two adults and one child aged 4. We spent 7 nights at Istra Island Hotel this July via TUI. ||Location|Location is absolutely beautiful, scenic wherever you are on the islands. There are two small islands that you can walk between, one with the hotel and pools and the other with an additional restaurant. Not only are there gorgeous sea views and swimming on both but peaceful pine woodland. ||I enjoyed going for strolls around both and sitting peacefully to read my book. We liked spotting the lizards and swallows. ||You can only get to the hotel via ferry so this can be limiting if you are looking for more things to do however, the ferry does run every hour to the mainland. ||On the day we arrived it was stormy which meant that the ferry was delayed and once we got on it was extremely choppy (one person was injured). I believe that TUI had arranged alternative accommodation on the mainland in case we could not travel over. ||Amenities and entertainment |There are a few pools outdoors and an indoor pool and jacuzzi. All were well maintained and there was plenty of space and loungers. There are no lifeguards on duty. ||You can access the beach/sea at various points around both islands. There are additional water activities you can pay for. ||There is a small gym. ||There was an animation programme, but I only really noticed aqua aerobics and drone flying lessons. ||There is a kids club for 4+ yrs where you can leave your kids. It was running 10-3pm during our stay but I think the hours vary depending on the amount of people staying. My daughter stayed at the kids club one morning on her own, she had no complaints. ||We didn’t see any entertainment, there was a mini disco for kids most evenings. I think there might’ve been a band one night and maybe we missed it. A lot of people seemed to go into Rovinj by ferry in the evening. ||Room|The room was modern and well maintained. We didn’t feel the housekeeping was as good as it could’ve been. We only had 1 toilet roll for 3 people for a week and had to ask for more. There was no TV remote so we had to ask for that too. It was hit and miss with bed making and I actually cleaned the floor twice myself. We usually leave a tip at the end but didn’t this time. ||Food and dining|The main restaurant is buffet style breakfast and lunch. As others say it can get extremely chaotic, with some people being quite aggressive with shovelling enormous food portions on their plates leaving nothing for others. The staff clearly work very hard to try their best but the cafeteria doesn’t seem able to accommodate everyone at peak times. That being said, we have stayed at similar places and as long as you can be equally pushy you’ll be fine. We are pretty good at standing our ground.||My main gripe about the food is that I would not recommend staying here if you have allergies or dietary requirements. A lot of foods aren’t labelled at all or are labelled incorrectly. I mostly eat vegetarian food and don’t eat fish at all so it was quite challenging for me. I think my favourite instances were trying to get some ‘vegetable soup’ which had hot dog pieces floating in it and the ‘four cheese pasta’ which was spaghetti with ham pieces mixed in. Things aren’t really cooked separately either e.g. they’ll just put out the plain cheese pizza slices with meat and fish pizza slices on top of each other. I asked about some things being vegetarian but I don’t think the cooks understood me very well. ||The actual quality of the food was good though, if you like seafood then you’re on to a winner. ||You have to venture out to get lunch, I recommend the pizza/pasta restaurant as you can get a takeaway pizza to share. ||Overall|The location is fantastic and if you want to take it slow and relax this is for you. I think some of the kids were bored, there were a lot of people there without children. ||I would’ve liked a more personal touch. We have stayed in other resort hotels and developed good relationships with certain staff at dinner or reception and it made our stays feel that bit more special - and made us tip more! ||I would stay again but as a couple. I imagine our sunset walks around the island would’ve been far...

We've just come back from a 2-week vacation at Island Hotel Istra, after having previously always stayed at Hotel Eden in Rovinj, which we loved, but this time the price didn't meet our budget so we decided to change hotel.

On the day of arrival, after a long journey with a baby, at the Islands reception the staff was not giving any direction, spoke broken english and didn't tell us anything about the luggages, just mentioning "leave them where you want". In the end I figured out we had to bring them ourselves to the boat... Very bad first impression.

The hotel itself is nice (except for the lighting, which has to be fully changed in the corridors and outside), good facilities, nice spa and the island is small but cute. There are lovely paths to take a stroll and the sunsets are breath-taking from the pier.

We had half board and the breakfast was delicious thanks to Gordana, who oversaw everything, dinner sometimes great sometimes ok. The issue was the long lines to get your food, which once you arrived at the table was lukewarm at best. We also expected there would be mabye one or two options for toddler, veggies and meat or potatoes with no salt, but that was not the case. It was nice that drinks were included, Eden should definitely do the same.

The waiting staff very friendly, especially Milica, Jovana, Tanja and Dragomir amongst the others. I would have someone at the entry of the restaurant with a little bit more life though... and welcoming. Helena, who i guess was the manager, was making sure everything worked and she was always greeting us.

The beaches were beautiful and comfortable, but the issues came on busy days. Since the sunbeds are rented to visitors as well, we often wouldn't find space in the front rows and had to stay in the back, or we ended up close to noisy people. I get it the hotel wants to make money, but we have paid for services. The umbrellas were often dirty with seagulls' poo, it would be nice if they got cleaned or brushed daily. The outdoor pool was nice as well but it was nearly impossible to find a spot to sit, so we went just a couple of times. The indoor pool was perfect, as with our baby we stayed there as it was warmer. The issue was we noticed some visitors with no rights to stay there coming inside, playing ball, etc. It would be a good idea to check people also on the pool areas and not only on the beach, where the guys then collect money from visitors. We also left our belongings and money unattended, so you don't want strangers roaming around freely.

The prices at the bars were very high... 2.6 eur for an espresso, 4 eur for a small bottle of water, not even in Rovinj you pay so much.

On the first week the lift reaching the restaurant was faulty, so we had to carry the stroller down two flights of stairs. Quite uncomfortable.

The cleaning of the room wasn't impeccable, as after two weeks lots of dust was piling up under the bed, and at the end we had no toilet paper and, since we would leave in two days, we got none and had to ask the room maid of another floor for some rolls. Tissues, after they were finished, were never replenished.

At the end of the vacation, which was quite expensive, at check-out no one asked if we had a good time etc.

Overall we can't say we were fully satisfied, as for the price paid we expected a different type of service. We also have to admit that this hotel, if you have a stroller and many luggages, is too much of a hassle and i wouldn't recommend it. If you're an older person or just wanna lay at the beach/pool, then this might be a good option for you.

In general, there were two many small details missing for making it a very good hotel worth coming back or worth spending so...
