B&B or Casa Particular. with 5 "rooms".||Located almost at the entrance to the National Park, just 100 m beyond the Villa Hotel Santo Domingo. We could park the car at the end of the road and walk on a raised wooden platform across a small riverbed to where the casa was located on the high riverbank on the other side. Warning, this is not a “house”, but a timber shack with 4 (maybe 5?) rooms. A family member helped with the suitcases. According to the website, there was only one room, which looked nice and as if it was in a house. However, we were directed to a tiny room in the corner of the timber housing block. It was like a prison room. With the double bed taking up all the space, here was no room to put the suitcases. After complaining, the owner explained that the large room was booked, but there was another room available, a bit larger in the same timber building. The room was 11 m2 with one bed 130 cm other bed 70 cm. There were 3 toilets/showers cabins
Read moreI recently stayed one night at Casa Sierra Maestra. I chose this Casa solely because of location as it is about a two minute walk to the gate to Pico Turquino National Park. However, it is much more than just that. This place is located just across the river from the main road in Santo Domingo, which is essentially a small hamlet in the middle of the mountains and jungle. Unfortunately, we arrived later than expected and I didn't have an opportunity to explore the surrounding area, which is absolutely stunning. ||||The Casa was clean, quiet (aside from the wildlife and livestock) and quite comfortable. There is a great sheltered patio/eating area overlooking the river.||The owners were extremely kind and went above and beyond what you would expect. As mentioned, I was late arriving (do not rely on Google for driving times in Cuba) but our hosts had a full spread prepared and waiting for supper which was absolutely delicious (a traditional SIerra Maestra lamb dish - I can't recall the name). The food was very reasonably priced.||||The Casa owner, Ulises and his son, also Ulises, were very quick to respond to all of my emails and looked after arranging my taxi to and from the Casa. They also looked after organizing my hike to Comandancia de la Plata which was breathtaking.||||This was an authentic Cuban experience and if you are tired of the beaches and want to connect with a different side of Cuba and its culture, I recommend a stay at Casa Sierra Maestra. I definitely wish I would have booked more than one, but I will...
Read moreThis lodge is absolutely fantastic, seated in a lush green valley where the road ends, reacheable via a shaky bridge and some stepping stones in a brook. The rooms are a bit primitive, yes, but hey, it's in the jungle! And the hosts Ulises and his lovely wife are the kindest and mosty generous couple You'll meet in the whole of Cuba! ||We stayed here for three days and enjoyed every minute of it. Lizards (small!) run around, birds circle the valley where sheep and chickens and horses graze. It's just super idyllic, with green and fresh air to breathe.||And the best of all - the food. When You've lost Your faith in Cuban cuisine, the Campesino food served here is a blessing, so rich in tastes!||You can go horse riding, swim in pools or waterfalls with crystal clear water, or climb the great mountains around You, Ulises will kindly help You organize what You want to do. This place IS...
