Rooms: We had 4 rooms in our group. All rooms had some issues. They tried to help each time we reported it. Broken shower, sewer smell in one room, flooding, broken safe etc. I would say that the quality of the room and the bedsheets are like 2* hotels in Toronto. Well below motel 6 quality and they really need to improve them. But we had really nice ocean views and the maids did a decent job in keeping the rooms relatively clean.||Beaches: Beach was awesome, lots other chairs, clear water, clean white sandy beach. A few sharp rocks as you enter but if you take it easy you dont have anything to worry about. If you have young kids bring something to protect their feet.||Pools: One of the pools was clear and clean. The swim-up pool was more cloudy and murky to my liking so I avoided it. Perhaps it has more kids and more alcohol in it. But they were able to get it more clear later into the week. But the pools do need some work as the tiles are coming off. But the water was nice and warm. ||Entertainment: The orange party was nice. The white party was also fun to watch. The Canada Day was a bit boring, they kept playing old rock songs that not many cared for. Perhaps it is better in high season. I have found better animation crews and shows at other resorts in Cuba. The Michael Jackson show was good but Playa Cayo Santa Maria has much better one. I just felt they can put a bit more effort here as this does not require any supplies just more human effort.||Food: It is Cuban food. We took spices so we were able to survive. They were slow to bring out things sometimes, other times they were rationing things but we did not run out of staple items. There was always Fish, Chicken, eggs, etc… Sometimes we ran out of sliced bread but there were other options. Fruits came and went but they had it. Ice cream was always there but Chocolate ones ran out quickly but the kids always found a way to get in line first and get it. Apparently someone saw friend chicken but we did not get it. ||Drinks: Again it is Cuba but they always had rum, beer and mixed drinks. Come drink bottles were hidden and if you tip or ask nicely they found them. So you need to work for it. Else they are ok you drinking the stuff they have most of.||Checkin: No issues. It was late when we checked in and they got us to bed quickly.||Checkout: No issues. They did provide us with a room to use for 30min to shower and change as our flight was late. But did not want to extend our checkout time.||Coffee: Quality really sucked. The coffee/expresso at the airport was much better. The coffee at the buffer was undrinkable. Tim Hortons is much better. At the lobby bad they do a bit better job but they pull the coffee early and then they pour it when you ask for it. You might as well just use a coffee maker. One day I lot it with them, when I saw them making better coffee for their local staff and their Cuban local guests. (More on this later). They think that we Canadians do not care about the coffee quality or cannot be bothered.||Waiters: Really poor. These people make a lot of money on tips. Some times too much. If someone tips them a lot then they forget about everyone else. In the buffer one time we complained about not getting even water, there were about 4 waiters just walking and talking. We told the supervisor and she told them and still no service. It is kid of arrogance and some of the workers have it. There are enough nice workers but you have to find them and go to them. Or bring a lot of money and tip like you are in a fancy restaurant. The bar tenders for the most part were good apart from a few bad ones that worked primarily at the lobby bar. You would think that they would put their best people here. ||Gardeners/Cleaning and cooking staff: Nice people. Like real Cubans. Please take care of them. These guys do not get tips like the waiters and would love anything you can give them and they give so much more back. ||Local guests: There were a lot of cuban guests at this time. I think they provide them discounted rates during low seasons and we had more cubans than other visitors and they were nice to have around the pool, parties etc. We made some good friends, we played with them, danced with them. Nice people. On the negative side, we found that sometimes they were taking a lot more food specially from the meat sections and fruit sections. This would cause the section to run out of food. Not their fault but the servers would allow them to take a lot. There a few times we stayed in lines and when our turn came they had no more meat. I avoid the meat section/grill for this reason and let them have the meat at the grill. Also we found that the service staff would take better care of them, often because most of them knew each other. A few of the Cubans we talked to worked at the resort or for Sunwing. So it is no surprise that they will take care of them but some staff ignored us when they were around. ||||In summary, we had mixed feeling about the vacations, we love a lot of things, we had fun, we meet nice people. But the bad/lazy/snobby waiters ruin things from time to time. We got the resort at a very low price and as such we would just not care. But if you pay more than $900 per person you will care. If you are a picky person or dont have patients this is not for you. If you are someone you can chill and want to help the nice cubans then you will have fun. I hope this...
Read moreWell this trip to this particular Memories hotel was disappointing but first the positives. The beach was extensive and absolutely gorgeous. The pristine waters were warm and basically waves free. There were lots of lounge chairs and the beach bar was accessible and passable. The other bar was closed. The one beach bar also served an experimental version of tacos that I would suggest they stop serving. They had ground bones and grisel in the ground meat which was a compilation of many buffet leftovers. They were greasy and unpredictable in contents. The bar staff closest to the lobby had great cappuccinos but unfriendly, unwelcoming and basically impolite even when tipped. Put a smile on your face jerks. !!!! The front desk check in team was over whelmed by the number of guests and problems. We couldn’t get into our rooms because the people wouldn’t get out. They were from overseas on the pacific coast.we were fortunate that all our room problems were attended to very quickly but that was due to our male camarero and with him we never had another issue for the two weeks we were there unlike other guests who had no shower water for a week or 3 days. We me had warm water for a week others had no air conditioning or woke up to a flood from the air condition If you go to Memories Flamenco please get the upgrade to Diamond Club for your own peace of mind and security. There’s a representative that can help you. The resort is very beautiful and well cared for by the gardeners who really were friendly, helpful , and delightful unlike the majority of service staff at the grand buffet Ahhhhh the buffet was challenging because there were too many guests, who were inexperienced travellers and presented as pigs to the trough. There was no administrative support staff to guide, assist and direct guests on how to approach a buffet. The staff were at an impasse to help. There were just too many people to serve. The buffet although plentiful was basically the same every day and sometimes I couldn’t even identify the selection of meats or fish or chicken the lamb I wouldn’t touch because whoever was in charge certainly didn’t know what they were doing. Again in any thins ground there was always ground bones and grizzle. Yucks the dessert bar was spectacular as well as the buns bread croissants, sweet breads. Yummmmm. The pastry chef knew what he was doing. Sadly the specialty bars like pancakes and eggs or spaghett pastas or meats, they only served you if you tipped. I mean a dollar for a fried egg or bacon or a pancake. That was disservice for 2 weeks. The best place for food and service was the 24 hour restaurant. All the staff there were so welcoming, friendly helpful lovely and did that daily for 2weeks. If we had any kind of problem we would go to them for help and advice the problem centre at front desk were incapacitated by not being able to call the right workers to get the job done. I want to compliment Manuel at the buffet for helping us anytime he was on duty. He, like the 24 hour restaurant staff would always help us and serve us with a wonderful smile. That’s the Cuba I remember. So in terms of dissatisfaction considerations, there was no soda pops like cola , sprite Pepsi orange until day 13 of our trip. If there was a shortage of anything it happened while we were there. I blame the administration for all the shortages , poor service, overwhelmed staff and really very poor leadership. That resort needs serious upgrades in terms of room amenities, working showers, patio doors were a struggle to open, the air conditioning needs to be replaced the bathrooms wet from the 1950’s w and whatever child painted them should be supplied with glasses or at least the supervisor should have checked the workmanship. It was disgraceful. Overall the administration was not prepared for this enormous crowd and leadership was woefully lacking. As for this being a staff pick for me that was misleading and I would be very cautious about choosing a staff pick because I am 75 and obviously have...
Read moreLong but thorough A lovely woman greeted me with a glass of juice. Since I had upgraded to the Diamond Club, I received some added bonuses, such as early check-in. However, the first thing I noticed that I didn't like was that luggage was left unguarded beside guest services, out in the open. At 3:30 p.m., a gentleman arrived with a small train/car and took me to my third-floor ocean view room. When I walked in, my breath was instantly taken away by the view, which was the best in the resort, in my opinion. Since I was traveling alone, that is what I had requested, and they delivered! However, as I started to settle in, I realized how tired and worn the resort was. I know Cuba, as I've been there before, but there were stains on the sheets (not so many that I demanded new ones), and the blanket smelled musty, or perhaps was it the room itself. I never sat in the desk chair and didn't sit on the couch without the blanket on it. The air-conditioning worked great but was very loud. The patio door was impossible to open. They came and fixed it twice, but it still didn't work. I was offered a new room, but by that time, I had grown very attached to my view and my cleaner. That was about six days into my stay. I do not regret my decision. On the positive side, the water pressure was great, and towels were refreshed when asked for. Water and pop (since I don't drink alcohol) were provided every day, and there was a fridge in the room. The bed was comfortable, although soft, and I liked the pillows. However, you should bring your own pillowcases. I used the blue beach towel they provided. Which they leave 2. They are big, thich and lovely. There were plenty of hangers and a magnifying mirror, hairdryer, iron, and ironing board. The room also had a safe, blackout curtains and a balcony with two chairs. The grounds and pools were gorgeous and well-kept, with the walkways in good condition and very clean. There were plenty of staff members around taking care of the areas, and the gardener was out every day tending to the trees and plants. At night, security was also present (or at least that's what I think they were doing). I felt safe at all times. The only issue I found was that certain areas were too dark, especially where there were steps. The pool areas were kept clean while I was there. There are three pools, but I only used one, which was lovely. There are plenty of chairs, lounge chairs, and benches throughout the resort. I didn't find the food to be that bad. It was repetitive, but there was always something tasty to eat. I brought a bunch of condiments, which I personally didn't use, but I saw others using theirs. The a la carte restaurants were nice, but the food was just smaller portions of the buffet food, prettied up. There may have been the occasional different food items. They had pizza, fries, and beach tacos for everyone every day, and for Diamond Club members, they also had beach BBQ chicken legs. I didn't starve! The beach is absolutely gorgeous. I walked for 4 kilometers almost every day on the white-powder sand beach, with turquoise waters. It's such a quiet, laid-back place compared to other places I've visited in Cuba. Yes, there is music, games, dancing, kayaks, and other activities that you can use for free, but if you crave peace and quiet, you just have to go a little further down the beach and you'll find it. There are a few entrances to the beach as the resort is on a higher ground. You enter by stairs on one and by a ramp on another. The others I am unsure. It is by far my favourite beach I have ever been to! The staff at this resort are second to none. They go above and beyond to try to make your stay enjoyable. They want you to come back! The bartender, Ramon, makes amazing fancy drinks, and the dining staff are so sweet! I would get hugs every day the last few days! My cleaning lady, Danaiky, was so amazing, and we clicked from the start! And Thalia at the front desk made me feel so special. They all did! If you go here,...
