This was my fourth time at this resort and I had a great time. There were a lot of changes that were different from my previous visits but once my travel partner and I figured them out, we were okay. The resort has to work with what they have when they have it so day to day scheduling/meal planning was very on-the-fly. I would suggest they just need to work on communicating those changes more effectively to the staff and then the guests. We assumed we would learn of those changes at the orientation but the Nexus/Westjet/Sunwing rep wasn’t familiar with the specific in-house changes at Coral/Selection, just in Cuba in general. ||It is Cuba so the rotating power outages that they talk about on our news is talking about, for the locals. At this resort, they have generators so while the power may flicker on and off several times a day, it was never out for more than 5 minutes. As Canadians, it may seem like an inconvenience if you are watching TV, it’s truly a humbling experience. At the resort it’s maybe 5 minutes without power, for the locals it’s 4-6 hours without power at a time. I think we can live without 5 minutes of power.||During our previous visits, breakfast and lunch were buffets and only dinner was a la carte. This time around buffets were only set up when there were enough people staying at the resort, I’m assuming to save costs and waste which makes total sense. Towards the end of our stay, more people showed up so buffets at breakfast and lunch were a thing again. But for the majority of stay, breakfast, lunch and dinner were all a la carte’s. We found we were actually more full from the a la carte offerings than the buffet. I always choose the pork option which I find is the safest for my stomach and every time it was fantastic.|When a la carte’s are offered, there is a QR code just inside the dining room that you must be connected to Wifi in order to scan. This was a sore spot for some guests because not everyone carries there devices with them. The odd time I forgot my phone, or my device was having issues connecting to wifi (I have an older IPhone), I just asked one of the ladies in the dining room and she allowed me to use her phone to scan the QR code to see the menu for those meals. The menu usually always included 3 options for each, appetizer, entree and dessert.||Something not everyone knew about, if there is nothing on the menu you prefer, you can ask for something different. The Coral bar has a 24 hour snack bar that always has different options. While we were there they had ham sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, hamburger, fries and pizza. Their pizza and hamburgers are fantastic! The hamburgers are actually made with pork instead of beef which was great. Or you can go to the 24 hour snack bar buffet on the selection side which is a short, not even 5 minute walk from the Coral side, to eat as well, if you prefer the buffet style.||I usually bring my own bottled water as I found the filtered water in the rooms to have an off taste. I discovered this trip, that is due to the bottles that the water sits in. I started walking to the bar to get my Brumate bottle filled with water and it tastes significantly better. Even if they were pouring the water from the same glass containers at the bar, they are switched out more often I find so I would say it tastes just as good as bottled water. Just a little tip that made our stay so much better than previous stays. ||I personally enjoyed the quiet atmosphere around the pool but I know that bugged some guests. They have speakers that play a daily repeated playlist around the pool but I just asked the pool bartender, Dayana, to turn off the speakers by the building we were staying in so we could nap or read in peace. I feel like the guests that want the entertainment, they should stay at the Selection(family) side as there is always noise/entertainment coming from there. ||Something I learned this trip was the difference between a Cuban Massage and a Relaxing Massage. I always book a massage every time I stay and this time, they had their staff (Aliuska and Rogelio) operating out of Building 17 on the coral side which was nice and close. A Cuban massage is done with oil and rum and a Relaxing massage is done with oil, without the rum and is a bit cheaper. I had two massages, one by each of their staff during the week we were there. Aliuska was very friendly and gave a great relaxing massage. The essential oils they use are so relaxing! Rogelio is trained in kinesiology and physiotherapy and his skills are off the charts. The resort currently only offers massages but I think it would be in their best interest to offer the services Rogelio has education in. Not only did he give me my massage but I explained a few aches and pains I had and he used his knowledge to address what my body needed. I walked away from my session with him feeling like a million bucks. Unlike in Canada, where you have to see different specialists for different issues, he seemed to have the combine knowledge of different skills (movement, manual adjustments, nerve pressure points etc.) to make a very well rounded session. I also love that Coral guests get 25% off the listed massage prices. Personally, I would pay more to have Rogelio’s services than just a regular massage. I believe the Coral staff prefer if we book massages through our butler but I have also walked over to the Selection side lobby where the prices are listed to book one as well.||As always, the staff were very friendly. Every staff member, maintenance, gardener, or otherwise that we walked by, said “Hola”(Hi) to us which I really appreciated. ||Carlos is the sole entertainer on the Coral side, working 6 days a week between Coral and Selection. I personally don’t need to be entertained when I’m on vacation but I feel some guests put that pressure on management and therefore on him to perform. I would much rather listen to his beautiful voice and guitar than the speakers, that’s for sure. While we were there, he did ask everyday if we wanted to do waterfit, yoga, volleyball, etc. We did do yoga at the beach with him one day which was different. Really nice if you are a beach person but I prefer the pool. He also set up a pirate theme night while we were there which was different, guests learning how to make cocktails and doing game trivia. I can see how much work he puts into it, getting everything organized and I wished management would appreciate the value in that. If there was a better set schedule where things like that were communicated before hand, on a sign, there would probably be more involvement. The involvement is not for Carlos’s lack of trying. A communication board for guests would be a great investment for management at this property.||I did find the bugs to be a bit much this time around. They must be attracted to my bloodtype because even with bug spray, they still bugged me. I might bring a Thermacell to keep the bugs away while sitting at the bar next time I go down. That being said, my travel partner didn’t really have any issues with bugs so it’s a personal thing I think.||There are the regular wonderful staff members that are always worth a mention and a couple new ones. |Dayana, the pool bartender, always makes the best tasting drinks. Julio makes the strongest drinks. Alexander, William, Osmel, Oscar, Hector, Yasmine, Maria, and Ysabel, are all examples of great customer service. We enjoyed every interaction with them. There are more but I forgot to ask their name and some weren’t wearing name tags. |Frank, Michael, and the female lifeguard with the angel singing voice- I can’t remember her name, were the main lifeguards on duty that would engage staff during the day. It’s nice to be acknowledged throughout the day and was much appreciated. |Ernesto was our male housekeeper pretty much all week which was refreshing. He was super friendly and although didn’t speak English very well, still tried to interact even with a simple wave. Always with a smile on his face and always leaving pretty origami towel decorations in our room.|Laritza was our evening butler and as always is fantastic. Very friendly and genuinely seems to care about us and our stay. |Yarian was our daytime butler and I absolutely love that he will purposely search us out in the morning to do a check in. That effort makes all the difference to me. The butlers have other things to do so they aren’t always just sitting in plain sight waiting to be called upon so the simple check in to see if we need anything at the beginning of the day, makes for a fabulous stay.||I will say, coming from a hospitality background, the inconsistencies with room cleaning times are different here for reasons we wouldn’t even think about. If our room gets cleaned for the first 3 days at 11am but on the 4th day it isn’t cleaned until 3pm, it’s probably because the housekeeper had to wait that long for a ride into work. Their transportation is very unreliable and they do the best they can when they can. Imagine “hitchhiking”… essentially waiting for hours for a vehicle to stop that has enough room in it for you… that is the norm in Cuba. I talked to a staff member that says sometimes he has to walk the 6 kilometer’s to work and he said he lives “close”. In my opinion, that is not close. Just something to consider when you have certain expectations of what a hotel/resort is supposed to do.||The one thing I will point out, as my travel partner came across this issue, was with allergies. They cook what they have and will repurpose certain foods for other meals so ensuring one ingredient is not in a specific dish was a challenge. My travel partner is deathly allergic to mushrooms and we received conflicting reports if mushrooms were in certain meals for the first couple days. The communication between the people who prep, cook and serve the meals could get better but I do feel guests should take the responsibility to ensure they don’t have any negative reactions. As the week went on, certain staff remembered her allergies and it was a non issue, but just setting those expectations from the start for us was handy.||For fellow Canadians travelling to this resort (or to Cuba in general), some items to consider bringing for the staff and their families are, sneakers, powdered milk, perfume/cologne, toothpaste, any medications, fire starters, power banks, rechargeable electronics (fans, lights, speakers etc.) Things we take for granted or could get at a dollar store are very very hard for them to acquire. Even through the black market where it may be significantly more expensive than what we pay.||Also, stop tipping in coins… they are just paperweights to the Cuban people. Most people forget to change those coins back into bills with the specific staff because not every staff member works every single day. This is just my own personal opinion because it makes me frustrated that the staff has to sit on hundreds of dollars of coins which are worthless to them until someone comes along with enough bills to switch it out. The staff would NEVER say that to guests so I feel I need to. Tipping a $5 bill less often is better for them than to have coins that they have to hold onto for an undetermined amount of time. Outrageous. In theory, the coin thing sounds okay IF you switch it out with the EXACT same person you gave the original coins to but in reality, that doesn’t always happen. Are you going to remember every single person you gave coins to? I doubt it.||Sorry for the long review but I am very passionate about this place and only want the best for its staff and want future guests to curb their (in my mind) unrealistic expectations before complaining about something that is an expectation here at home but shouldn’t be in Cuba. Things change. Cuba is all about rolling with the flow. It was a fantastic vacation and I can’t...

This will be 1 of 2 reviews I write as we went in Feb and Returned in Aug. ||We traveled as a couple in February to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday. The Iberostar Coral Holguin is a smaller adults only resort located in the Playa Pesquero area of Holguin on Cuba’s northern coast. The layout is one of the most convenient we have seen, with a straight central path from the lobby to the beach and buildings no more than three stories high. The atmosphere was calm and quiet, which made it feel personal and relaxing. The cooler February weather kept the outdoor spaces comfortable, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Because this trip was focused on celebrating a milestone, the small details stood out even more, from staff greetings to shared quiet moments by the pool and beach. For my wife the highlight was being able to mark her birthday in a setting that felt both special and memorable.|Food|All three meals during our February stay were consistently good. Breakfasts at the Coral buffet were a highlight with freshly prepared eggs, fruit, breads, and a good variety each morning. Lunches were equally enjoyable with fresh items cooked on the grill and plenty of choices to keep things interesting.||Suppers stood out the most. At the Coral sit down there was always a seafood option alongside at least two non-fish choices, which kept the variety balanced. Steak and lobster appeared on the menu about half the time, and both were excellent when offered. The food was well prepared and matched the descriptions, which made suppers something to look forward to rather than something to settle for.||The snack bar was our first stop when we arrived late at night. By the time we checked in it was 10:30 p.m. and Coral had no food options open, so we went straight to the Selection snack bar. The hamburger we had there was surprisingly good, and after a long day of travel it felt like a real treat. Beyond that visit we stuck to the Coral restaurants and buffet, which met our needs without having to wander.||The most memorable meal was the special birthday dinner arranged for my wife’s 50th. Staff reserved us a table, added personal touches, and happened to have lobster on the menu that night. She was thrilled with the experience, especially when they sang happy birthday. It was thoughtful and personal, and we both left that evening feeling grateful for how much effort they put in.||Overall score: 4.5/5|Pools|The Coral pool was the centerpiece of our February stay and easily the highlight of the outdoor spaces. It is large enough that even when there were plenty of people around it never felt crowded. Bali beds and loungers were always available, which made it easy to find a comfortable spot.||The atmosphere in February struck the right balance. There was activity without being overwhelming, and much of that came from Carlos, who was a true highlight. He kept the pool lively with aquafit, pool volleyball, and other activities that brought people together without making things chaotic. His energy created just the right amount of life around the pool and gave us some of our favourite moments of the trip.||The pool itself always had enough space for some quiet time when we wanted to be on our own, while the pool bar offered a different kind of enjoyment. Conversations there were easy and friendly, often with returning guests who shared stories and tips that added to the atmosphere. The bartender was consistently attentive and the cocktails were always good.||There is also a jetted tub beside the Coral pool. It isn’t a true hot tub but more of a bubbling pool, and while my wife didn’t use it often, she enjoyed it when she did.||Overall score: 5/5|Beach|The resort offers access to two beaches that connect around the point. The larger Playa Pesquero side has more activity, while the smaller area closer to Coral is quieter and less crowded. Both have soft sand, clear water, and plenty of sea life to spot while swimming.||In February the weather made the beach especially enjoyable. The ocean was calm, the water was warm, and it felt safe to swim out past the break and back around between the two areas. One of the most memorable moments came during one of these swims when we saw a large school of blue and white fish leaping out of the water. It was brief but exciting, and exactly the kind of surprise that makes time in the ocean special.||The distance from the Coral section down to the water was noticeable. Carts were available at times but not always consistent, so we usually walked. The walk itself was manageable, and on warm afternoons we sometimes stopped at the Selection pool on the way back to cool off or grab a drink before finishing the trip.||Overall score: 4.5/5|Facilities|The layout of Coral is one of the best features of the resort. Everything connects along a straight central path from the lobby to the beach, which makes it simple and convenient to get around. The pool, buffet, and restaurants are placed logically, and the room blocks are spread out evenly so nothing ever feels far away. It’s one of the most thoughtfully designed resorts we’ve stayed at.||In February the cooler weather worked in the resort’s favour. The mostly open-air design kept things bright and airy without the heat being overwhelming. The lobby bar in particular was comfortable, a place where we could relax with a drink without feeling too hot or crowded.||One challenge came from the second floor room location. The stairs became slippery when it rained, which made them feel dangerous at times. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it’s something worth keeping in mind if mobility or safety is a concern.||Carts were available to make the trek to the beach easier, though we didn’t rely on them often. The walk itself was manageable, and with the cooler February weather it was usually pleasant.||Overall score: 4.5/5|Rooms|Our second floor room was spacious, clean, and well maintained. The bed was comfortable, and the large ceiling fan above it was a welcome touch that kept the room cool along with the air conditioning. Everything felt fresh and ready when we arrived, and housekeeping did a great job of keeping it that way throughout our stay.||The bathroom included a jetted tub, which quickly became my wife’s favourite feature. It was a relaxing way to wind down in the evenings and added a bit of luxury to the room. The patio doors were a little awkward to operate, but manageable once we got used to them.||Being on the second floor gave us a nice view, but it also had its drawbacks. When it rained, the stairs became slippery and felt unsafe at times. It didn’t take away from our enjoyment of the room itself, but it’s something to be aware of.||Overall score: 4.5/5|Service and Staff|Service across the resort in February was excellent. At the Coral buffet and restaurants, staff were attentive and friendly, always making sure we had what we needed without being intrusive. The pool bar staff stood out for their consistency and energy, which made spending time there even more enjoyable.||Carlos was a highlight. His enthusiasm and ability to bring guests together at the pool made a noticeable difference, turning simple days into memorable ones. Aquafit, volleyball, and casual activities he led gave the pool just the right amount of life.||Larissa, our concierge, was outstanding. She kept us informed, answered questions quickly, and made sure small details were taken care of without us ever needing to worry. Agustos was equally fantastic. He helped us organize a trip to a local restaurant, Captain Roamie, and followed up both before and after to make sure everything went smoothly. That meal turned out to be one of the best experiences of the trip and added something unique outside the resort.||Lisbet, who worked the grill in the Coral section, was also excellent. She was always friendly and brought genuine warmth to her work, making simple meals feel like personal experiences.||The most memorable example of staff effort came on my wife’s 50th birthday. They reserved us a table, provided a birthday cake, sang happy birthday, and made sure lobster was one of the options that evening. It felt thoughtful and personal, and made the milestone celebration even more special.||Overall score: 5/5|Entertainment|Entertainment in February was well balanced and often memorable. Around the pool, Carlos kept things lively with aquafit, volleyball, and casual games that brought people together without turning it into a party scene. His energy made the daytime atmosphere fun and engaging.||In the evenings the Coral section always had something going on, though it was never repetitive. Sometimes Carlos would play music or sing, other times the two singers performed, and there was always a bit of variety. Each performance was short but just enough to make the evening feel special. It was never a party vibe, but always a fun one that added the right atmosphere without being overwhelming.||We didn’t spend time at the main evening shows in the Selection area, preferring the quieter and more relaxed entertainment at Coral. Having something different each night gave the evenings a sense of anticipation without the need to leave our section.||Overall score: 5/5|Overall|The Iberostar Coral Holguin was an excellent choice for celebrating my wife’s 50th birthday. Food was consistently good, with strong breakfasts and lunches at Coral and suppers that often featured steak or lobster. The late-night hamburger on arrival and the special birthday dinner were standouts that showed how much effort staff put into making the trip memorable.||The pool was a centerpiece, never crowded and always balanced between quiet moments and fun activities. Carlos kept things lively with aquafit, volleyball, and even music in the evenings, while the pool bar was a place for good drinks and friendly conversations with returning guests. Larissa as concierge, Agustos who organized a fantastic trip to Captain Roamie, and Lisbet at the grill all stood out for their warmth and professionalism.||Evening entertainment at Coral was short but just enough, with something different each night.

This is our first time in Cuba and our first time at an all-inclusive resort. So, we really have no point of comparison to budget whether the Coral was good or not. But here is a list of things we did and did not love: Good: - Our room was quite nice. Lots of space, big bathroom, big TV. - A/C in the room was excellent. Always felt cool and was easy to adjust colder and warmer. - Plenty of hot water in the shower. - Comfortable bed. - Room was cleaned well each day. - All the staff at the resort are very friendly. - A fairly wide assortment of food choices. - The resort is quiet. We never felt overwhelmed with noise or had trouble sleeping.- Everything seemed quite clean. - 2 nice beach areas in the resort. - 2 nice pools. - Decent little fitness center- 5 different themed restaurants, a buffet, and a 24-hour snack bar. - A couple of billiard tables, multiple bars, a cigar smoking room, a little dance club, a currency exchange spot, a small store for sunscreen/sandles/toiletries/etc. - There is a doctor on site (Although I can't authoritatively say if he was an actual doctor or not) Not As Good: - When we first got to the resort the entire place did not have water. But, no one told us this. We just struggled for a while trying to figure out how to use the water. - It felt difficult to figure out how everything worked. It would make sense to have some paperwork with all the resort details. But instead we had to continually ask questions and figure things out as we went. - Each day they put bottles of filtered water and 2 beers in your fridge. We don't drink and asked if cans of soda could be provided instead. They said yes, but this did not ever occur. - The bottles of filtered water they provide has a overpowering musty taste. - My wife got mild food poisoning from something on the 3rd day. - None of the food was really great. If you go to the buffet you will eventually find the food you like the best, but even that is just OK. The ice cream is OK, but otherwise, the desserts are very underwhelming. - I was aware going in that the food in Cuban resorts is not their best quality, but I was hoping for really good fruit. Unfortunately, this was not the case. There was fresh pineapple, papaya, and bananas, but the rest all came from a can. - The wifi is real bad. It constantly disconnects and even when it stays connected, it is dreadfully slow. - Basketball and tennis courts are in pretty rough shape. - There are no cities or towns close to the resort. So, if you want to see other things there is a 20-60 minute drive to get anywhere.

Just got back from a wonderful vacation at Iberostar Coral Holguín. Highly recommend this resort for adults only. The rooms are beautiful and very clean. We were lucky to get a room with an outdoor shower and thoroughly enjoyed bathing in the warm sunshine and under the stars at night. A definite must try if available. The maids and mini bar staff are attentive and will bend over backwards to help make you happy. Our maid Dayne was especially friendly and made cute animals out of our bedding each day. Our butlers Yarin and Augusto checked in with us daily and took care of all our needs and requests. The wait staff are second to none and quite a few of them exceeded expectations. In the morning our favourite waitress Maria always remembered our drink orders and the fact that I liked a glass of ice on the side for my chocolate milk. She always greeted us with a smile and made the start to our day special. Janisbella and Yasmine were also phenomenal and we shared many laughs and jokes during our meals. Jacqueline at the front desk became a fast friend who always went out of her way for us with our many questions and requests. My friend and I had the pleasure of getting a massage from Jamelia and Rogerio and it was the best 90 minutes I have ever spent. We also had an absolute blast with some of the bar staff. Alexander, Julio, Hector, William and the very beautiful Dayana were super fun, attentive and personable and made great tasting drinks. Even the lifeguard (her name eludes me) was great. I had many interesting conversations with her about her competitions and training. Lovely woman! Last but certainly not least was Carlos, the entertainment coordinator. Carlos is the most genuine, kind hearted, fun loving, hard working man I have ever met. We spent many hours with Carlos each day playing volleyball, football, doing aqua fit, dancing and just having a great time. Carlos is a huge asset to Iberostar and should be commended on his dedication to providing the guests with a wonderful experience. Iberostar is a wonderful, relaxing, fun resort with exceptional staff and I highly recommend staying there!

I'd love to say i had a grat time unfortunately Iberostar needs to do better. The experience was lack luster. The grounds of the resort was not maintained at all, dry parched grass and trees , empty water fountains. See my other Google post for more pics. I was prepared (brought my own ) for the lack of spices and Condiments based on research. The only cooling area was rooms. The dining room was incredibly hot particularly at dinner time. The children activities that were advertised, non existent!!!! The kids water play area 🫣old rusted and had corded off areas , closed for one day . Some of the slides were repaired ** making use of the area possible. The bedding and towels have seen better days. A bit tattered and discolored. There were cows roaming the grounds at night, scared us as we walked back to our room. There needs to be some overhead lighting on the pathways at night. The existing ones are low to the ground. Lacked accessibility, no elevator for persons with disabilities and parents with strollers.
