How do you give a score to a place like Hotel U Berounky? It's a far, far cry from the Ritz in terms of luxury, but we enjoyed ourselves mightily and the experience will remain in our memory as one of the best.||This is a country inn. The accommodation is simple but comfortable. The food is ample and good. The welcome is warm and the service is attentive and sincere. The setting is absolutely beautiful!||We wanted overnight accommodation outside Prague but near to the airport for an early afternoon departure. After much searching, we found this inn at Sbrsko, 5kms from Karlstejn Castle and about 30 kms from the airport. We drove from Cesky Krumlov and, for the last 10 kms or so our route was through woods of deciduous trees, hills, tiny villages and along the river. Certainly not too many cars or people! Such a surprise to reach the hotel and find that it was a mecca for dozens of cyclists and hikers who had gathered on the large open terrace, under big umbrellas, to have lunch and/or a beer. The hotel overlooks a broad river, the Berounky, with its green banks and glittering fast flowing water. Honestly, we'd intended visiting the castle but ended up spending the entire afternoon just sitting in the shade of the umbrella enjoying the scenery, the atmosphere, a bowl of garlic soup and, of course, the beer! One of the young waiters spoke fair English and was so kind, warm and obliging – he was a delight!||Our room had a view of the river. The bed was comfortable and there was a small en-suite shower and separate toilet. Very clean. Very unpretentious. Very reasonably priced.||Food in the Czech tradition was offered for dinner and was tasty and good. As was breakfast.||It was an unexpected and totally authentic Czech experience. We loved every minute of it. Hence...
Read moreThis is a difficult place review. It's very good but basic. We enjoyed ourselves and would definitely recommend it to others. ||||It sits on the river bank and has an open terrace for meals. Food is very good, the service very friendly, and the beds are comfortable and en suite. The restaurant is popular with locals who drive out to it, or use it as a stopover on a hike. The area is very popular with ramblers.||||It's not actually in Karlstejn, but a couple of miles along the road in the small village of Srbsko. There is a station on the main line to Prague across the bridge. Trains to Prague are every 30 minutes and take 30 to 40 minutes depending on which station you go to. A return ticket for two people is a little over £5!!||||Free wifi and free gated (but not locked!) parking.||||We enjoyed it, but there may be some things that are not to everyone's taste. The main railway is 200 yards away across the river. The trains are frequent. The double glazing is old-fashioned - two separate windows. If that sort of noise bothers you, you may want a room looking over the village instead of the river. The other point to note is that the outside area is the main dining area. There is a small indoor restaurant, but the Czechs have not yet banned smoking in restaurants. If you eat outside it can get cold as the evening draws in. But the staff bring round blankets when necessary!!||||If you are not after luxury and want to get close to the country, this is a good...
Read moreThis was another return visit after a number of years.||This hotel is really a bit closer to a guest house than a hotel. It's not wonderfully elegant (it's verging on the eccentric), but the staff are really friendly and helpful... and they do speak some English, though you'd be wise to have a phrasebook to hand.||We ate at the hotel every evening (the food is good). The first evening, we struggled with the Czech menu. The second evening, we found that they'd taken the trouble to make a translation for us, and that served for the following evening. On last evening, we were getting better at working things out - which was fortunate, because the revised menu wasn't translated. We were a bit nonplussed one evening when we found that restaurant service stopped completely at about 9pm - what you hadn't ordered by then, you didn't get to order: no desserts that day!||Breakfasts were good, with a decent selection of options.||Parking was available in their courtyard.||There was a free bus to Karlstejn, itself, from where we were able to buy a group train ticket into Prague for a ridiculously small sum, compared with UK train fares.||If and when we decide to go back to that area, I can't imagine we'll be looking to stay anywhere else - it's just a nice...
