Not often enough I have the time to enjoy the most rainy part of Denmark..."Sønderjylland", but this Saturday I had a chance to sit down for lunch at Gram Slotskro. |The place is well known for its Sunday cake extravaganza, plus 20 cakes, the first Sunday of every month (no tables available unless you have booked in advance). But how would a normal lunch be...?|The food is traditional Danish lunch, meaning rugbrød/smørrebrød or a few meat based dishes. We went for the smørrebrød, as even when you stuff yourself you won't feel too heavy to walk the park. We chose a platte and a stjerneskud. Both were large portions and came with plenty of garnish. For a non-Dane you will love the variety of the platte and for a Dane you will enjoy getting a taste of all the classics, except "leverpostej".|Don't forget to enjoy a cold beer from Haderslev brewing house "Fuglesang"! The beer is good, although not amazing, but is local and struggles to stay afloat facing hard competition from the likes of Carlsberg and Bryggeri Gruppen.|After lunch, enjoy the park and Gram Slot (castle). At the end of the park is a beautiful forest, which is good for building some appetite before coffee and the traditional cake "lagkage". The park is small and therefore takes only 5 minutes, why you should consider reading all the signs next to the herbs, which are fun facts...
Read moreWhen I booked,I thought I would be staying at the castle, based on the picture on the homepage, but I was sent to the little white house across the street form the castle. This is just a rooming house, several bedrooms sharing a common bathroom - similar to a hostile but at the charge rate of a nice hotel. Rooms were not cleaned, even vacated rooms that had their doors left open. Bathroom was not cleaned. And I felt UNSAFE. I decide to leave after the second restless night. When I asked for a refund for those days that I would not be staying but already paid for, I was told that they do not give refunds. Oh yah, they decide on which nights they serve dinner. Three of the five nights that I was to be with them, dinner was not offered. Breakfast was offered only after I needed to be at work. A TV was provided in a common area, but did not work. Surprise, after surprise. If you are committed to staying here, I suggest you pay for just 1 night so you can decide if you want to...
Read moreThis charming KRO has a long history which you can read in the info folder in your room.||The rooms are rather modern and comfy, I really appreciate TWO nice chairs and a table - very often you find just one comfy chair and a office chair. There was garden furniture as well, as many of the rooms are located in a ground floor side building. But you will have to accept no privacy when sitting outside, as there are no partition walls betweeen each room's outdoor spots.||We really enjoyed our dinners both evenings, and will surely recommend the restaurant of this KRO. Friendly and professional staff, lovely food and unformal but proper premises.||Gram is just 20 mins drive from Denmarks oldest town Ribe, which you really must visit during your stay in this part of...
