We enjoyed Havreholm Slot for a family gathering in June, 2012.|||| The location is good for exploring North Sjaelland, which is a very popular Danish summer vacation area. It's close to Helsingor and the ferry from Sweden, and nice beach areas. There are cute little harbor villages close by, and three great Danish castles, Fredensborg, Fredericksborg and Kronborg within a short drive (that King Christian IV was crazy about building castles) It's less than an hour north of Copenhagen.|| The property is in a nice rural, wooded area. There is a golf course and a recently opened zipline/obstacle course through the forest trees next door. The bicycling around the area is great, and there's an old abbey close by that was very interesting to visit.||||Havreholm Slot is not an actual castle; the name is a bit deceptive. It's a manor home built by a successful businessman, and it's not that old (a bit more than 100 years, if memory serves). The original house has been greatly expanded; most of the guest rooms are in more modern buildings adjacent to the manor home. The design of the guest room buildings is incongruous to the manor home.|| The grounds are wooded, well kept, and quite pretty. There is a large pond on the property, and a walking path with seating areas around the pond.|| There are both indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, some gym equipment, and a sauna and changing rooms. There're lots of family activities available (somewhat of a conflict, as I'll explain).|| The property was clean and well maintained.||||The guest rooms are modern, comfortable, and spacious. There are 2 bedroom family rooms available. There are a couple of rooms in the original manor home, but none of us stayed there.||They are equipped with kitchens, cookware, utensils, a small refridgerator/minibar, and coffee/tea.|||| Breakfast is served in a beautiful painted dining room It's a typical Danish breakfast buffet, and nicely presented. The restaurant serves dinner, and is very good. We had an anniversary dinner there one night, and the food was skillfully prepared. The menu is 3 course prix fixe, with no options. If there are vegans or picky eaters with your party, you should check the menu offering before booking. The service was outstanding.|| I have to warn you: quality dining in Denmark is CRAZY expensive. Due to V.A.T. and the general high cost of everything, the fare at even average restaurants is stunning.|||| The service throughout was uniformly professsional and helpful, but it's not quite full service. There is no concierge or bellman. We had to drag (literally) our bags across the gravel parking area and path to the rooms, and lug the bags to upstairs rooms. The front desk clerk answered questions about the area, etc..., and was helpful. I had to leave very early, and requested some ham and cheese sandwiches, and they delivered no problem. Everybody speaks english.||||I can recommend this hotel with a couple of cavates:|| First, they market heavily to business as a meeting and conference center, and it is obviously their ||primary market. As a result, they arrange on-site events to compliment the meetings. One of the nights we were there, they threw a party, with a DJ, dancing, and what must have been an open bar, and it didn't wind down until around 3:00 a.m. IT WAS LOUD!!! We had kids in our party, and nobody was able to sleep. Now Danes really like to party, and if there is a conference with younger attendees, as they were during our visit, it could be a real problem. I would check this out before booking.||||Thus the schizophrenic description. They market to business, families, and as a vacation destination.||I can assure you that a family visiting for a quiet holiday during a business conference will be a bit uncomfortable, and the hotel staff will be focused on the needs of the conference.||||Second, this isn't a castle or manor home property like you would find in England. It's short on charm, history, and peacefulness. You won't be having afternoon tea in the Great Room below portraits of the Lord and Lady. It's really more of a business hotel with a twist.||||Overall, good food, great location, lots to do, and great service, but families with kids looking for a summer vacation of reunion should...
Read moreWe stayed at Havreholm Slot for a family reunion in early August. The setting is beautiful, and the lake a lovely feature. The property also has a golf course, tennis courts and a good outdoor swimming pool. The interior is luxurious and beautifully furnished. The "garden room" which has a mural of the Garden of Eden covering its walls was particularly nice. Our reunion's main function was in the largest function room and this proved very good for the number (about 100). Food was of excellent quality, but the choice of wines reasonably limited. The breakfast buffet was of a high standard. The room we had was not part of the main building, but I'm not sure if there is any accomodation in the "slot" (castle - but it's probably more a "country estate" ) itself. I suspect not. The wing we were in comprises about 10 units in a block beside the main building, in two floors of 5. The downstairs unit suffers in that there is some noise transmitted from upstairs. Also, as there is no airconditioning, the French doors had to be open and this allowed mosquitoes and other nasties in, which made it difficult to sleep. My wife suffered a very painful wasp sting. The lock on the French doors was faulty and impossible to lock again once opened - which would have been an issue under other circumstances. A properly sealed driveway would be nice, too, as it is difficult to wheel a case over deep gravel, plus there is the noise factor. Despite the few niggles, this is a very nice resort and we had a...
Read moreIn realtion to the hefty price, the experience is unfortunately a letdown. The actual "castle" is pretty to view from the outside. The room we stayed in which is not a part of the main building is outdated, poorly constructed and lacks the enterior one would expect in the pricerange. The adveritized kitchen lacks basic utilities and the fridge/freezer is so outdated and noisy that it cannot perform its basic task of preserving food. There were powder coffee and tea bags in the room, but unfortunately no cups :(. The lighting indoors was almost non existent which was a pitty since our room was located under a large tree. The buttons to control the existing lamps are confusing at best. The shower booth is full of unremoved spiderwebs and bugs and cleaning during our stay was not perfomed. The wifi keeps disconnecting and will not automatically reconnect, the speed is painfully slow so don't expect to stream Netflix :) The beds are quite stiff and the pillows so soft that you need to stack 5 of them to achieve any head support.
On the positive side the room is fairly spacious, the doors are lockable and there is a parking (although the parking surface will render suitcases unrollable..), the breakfast was fine given that you are not a vegan/vegetarian, the staff was friendly and the general outdoors area has a charming ambience.
In conclusion this hotel has a lot of potential but is in desperate need...
