As someone who has travelled to Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica and understands all the differences this will be a very honest review. First off the constant 5 star ratings here on Google are a bit of a sham as you can see they are auto generated almost every hour each day so the Google reviews go higher. Check in was easy, the shuttle was approx 60 mins from the airport and well air conditioned. When we arrived it was later at night around 6PM. When asked about upgrading and VIP reception told me to come back the next day as the day was over to enjoy most VIP things which made sense. Our room was actually very nice, I booked a regular deluxe but it seemed like the superior deluxe as the room space was huge and we had a separate walk in shower and a separate toilet which I didn’t think was what we booked. Was happy that the bed and sheets were clean, fridge was stocked with water everyday, toilet flushed with no issues and hot water running easily. The bed was also super comfy for us as it wasn’t too soft or too hard. We were in block 18 which was right next to the old buffet building that burnt down so during the day there is a lot of construction but we were barely in the room during the day. Food…so it’s true what the reviews say that the food is basically always the same everyday at the buffet. Pasta, pizza, some chicken, cold cuts, fruit, half a salad bar thing and rice. We upgraded to VIP for $25/pp per day which got us premium alcohol and an extra restaurant booking for the week as well as a kid free beach section with comfy day beds and a vip pool area that was quiet and away from families. There was no point in booking the “Italian” VIP as it’s just the buffet area with the same food as lunch. The Brazilian and Mexican restaurant are in the same spot, didn’t get to try the Mexican food but the Brazilian was good. Lots of meat coming on skewers that they cut off onto your plate for you but no menu explaining anything. The VIP lunch a La carte was nice as there was hot and cold soup options, salad, burgers, sandwiches, fish, pasta etc. the vip lounge next to the lobby was always stocked with snacks too so you didn’t just have to eat burgers if the restaurants were closed. The restaurant on the dock was beautiful and romantic with great food like salmon, steak, ceviche etc. The grounds are very nicely maintained, lots of wildlife and the beaches are free of seafood but there is a lot of rocks. You can find spots where the rocks are covered in moss so they aren’t super sharp but the water is beautiful. I recommend bringing some pool floats as it helped get in and out of the ocean. The pool is huge and there’s a swim up bar but they mostly only serve you on the opposite side outside of the water. The entertainment here is constantly always just dancing with the odd interactive games here and there but we barely bothered to sit down in the evenings as the shows suck. They were just constant employees asking the crowd to come dance. I have been to better resorts even in Cuba with better shows like a magic one or fire dancing etc. Also another key thing to note is barely anyone speaks English and a lot of the entertainment is in Spanish so it doesn’t really cater to any international crowds. Lots of Spanish and French. Had we gotten trip protection we would have paid more to switch hotels but we had read all reviews before coming so we knew what to expect. Overall, don’t book here if you have a choice. If you have booked, be prepared to come for the beach, the drinks and being on vacation in a warm climate. If you don’t come with high expectations you’ll have a good time like we did but I hope this review helps anyone else who is hesitant. You’ll have a good time with whomever you are travelling with. Bring some card games and a bubba! One more thing, reviews are correct that the beach doesn’t have much shade. This is the first resort I’ve been to where there aren’t rows of straw umbrellas.

Overall Experience: My stay at this hotel was generally good, though it’s more basic compared to its sister chain, Dreams. While I might stay here again if the price is right, I would only do so because of the excellent staff. My overall rating is 3 out of 5, which is generous and largely due to the standout employees mentioned below. Negatives: Dietary Concerns: If you have allergies, religious dietary restrictions (especially regarding pork), or follow a vegetarian/vegan diet, this hotel may not be the best choice. There were frequent mix-ups with food, particularly at the morning egg station and the pizza station. Despite informing staff (in Spanish, which I had to learn), my vegetarian requests were often overlooked. While this wasn’t life-threatening for me, it could be for someone with severe allergies. The self-serve counters also lacked sufficient serving utensils, leading to cross-contamination. Food labelling was another issue—what was labelled as a “Cheese Quesadilla” turned out to be a “Cheese and Ham Quesadilla.” If you need precise control over your food, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. Room Issues: Our arrival was marred by a mix-up with our rooms, likely due to a combination of the Microsoft computer issues and heavy rainfall in La Romana, which had left several rooms unusable due to flooding. After nearly 20 hours of travel, we had to wait three hours for the first room and another two hours for the second. This wasn’t an isolated incident; other guests faced similar delays. The second room we received was a temporary one, and it was clear that water had entered this ground-floor room. While the rooms are generally spacious and of good quality, they do require maintenance—shower and toilet doors need adjusting, and patio doors don’t close securely, which could be a concern for security-minded guests, especially on the ground floor. Sunbed Shortage: Sunbeds by the beach or pool are claimed by 8 AM, and those with shade are taken even earlier, by 7 AM. The situation is so bad that people reserve beds as early as 7:30 AM, yet often don’t use them until much later. This is a widespread issue, but it’s worth noting that the neighbouring Dreams hotel always had plenty of available beds. Sunscape could greatly improve the guest experience by providing more sunbeds and shade. Dining Experience: The buffet can be chaotic, with high pressure to turn tables quickly. If you’re not among the first to arrive, you’ll likely have to search for a table, wait for it to be cleaned, and then find someone to bring you cutlery and drinks before you can even begin to serve yourself. After two weeks, the food at the buffet became monotonous, so we opted for the specialty restaurants in the evenings. The pool could also benefit from more frequent cleaning. Beach Condition: The beach has rocks, particularly in the water, which can be hard to see. I wore water shoes to avoid injury, but this is a natural issue and not the hotel’s fault. Positives: Specialty Restaurants: The specialty restaurants don’t suffer from the cross-contamination issues - but get there 6:30/7 PM The Animation Team works incredibly hard to entertain guests. Special mention goes to La Maquina and Black Angel “Ai Ai Ai – Catastrophic,” Carlos B at the front desk. Yonheidy at Chopsticks, Cesar at Tiki Taco. Yonathan and Alexandro at the swim-up bar were great, and the lifeguard near the pier and the security guard on the beach, their kindness didn’t go unnoticed. Hotel, room and Grounds, are clean, and the large gardens are well-maintained. Conclusion: While this hotel has its challenges, especially regarding food safety and some logistical issues, the excellent staff and pleasant surroundings make it a place I might return to under the right circumstances. However, those with strict dietary needs or a preference for seamless service might want to consider other options.

Despite the beautiful beach and well-edited promotional photos, almost everything else about this place fell short — and in some cases, was shockingly bad. I genuinely hope this review helps others avoid the same disappointment. The reality of our experience: • Disgusting Food and Dirty Conditions: The buffet was absolutely vile — stale bread, cold or poorly cooked food, and dirty dishes stacked everywhere. Even the café (the only thing open between 2 PM and 6:30 PM) served vending machine coffee, rock-hard pastries, and moldy bread. The only restaurant with semi-decent food was Tierra, but getting a table meant waiting around for an hour every night. Ordering a simple pizza to-go? Not allowed. Good luck finding anything edible without a long wait. • Poor Service and Incompetence: When we got locked out of our room, the front desk gave us a faulty key card — forcing us to walk back and forth across the resort multiple times just to access our room. The concierge service was equally useless. We asked for help confirming our airport transfer, and were told to “come back and do it ourselves the next morning.” • Worn Out Amenities and Unacceptable Hygiene: The slippers in our room had clearly been used by previous guests but were simply rewrapped as if they were new. The WiFi? Practically non-functional — basic internet activities like scrolling through social media were impossible (I even have screenshots showing just how bad the speeds were). • Entertainment and Activities Are a Joke: There is nothing to do at this resort. The only “amenity” beyond the beach is a tiny arcade — and even that isn’t included in the all-inclusive package. The entertainment is almost laughable — performances and activities that felt designed for a 70-year-old Midwest bus tour. Silly skits, poorly rehearsed dances, and low-effort events made me genuinely embarrassed to sit through them. I found myself literally counting the hours until we could leave. • Terrible Impression of the Dominican Republic: It breaks my heart to say this because I had high hopes for this trip, but this resort left me with such a bad taste that I honestly don’t see myself returning to the Dominican Republic anytime soon. • Hyatt Should Be Ashamed: It’s astonishing that Hyatt dares to put their name on this property. Based on this experience, I will never trust a Hyatt-branded resort again, especially within the “Inclusive Collection.” I know no vacation is ever “perfect,” but when you’re spending your hard-earned money and precious time, you deserve better than this. Please — for your own sanity — book somewhere else.

Well what can i say.... like others i was a bit apprehensive because of some of the reviews... BUT my husband myself and our teenage lad all LOVED this hotel. I have been to different hotels in DR 14 times now and we have re booked here for 21 nights for our wedding anniversary in July 2026. ||I will get the areas for improvement/slight negatives out of the way first - ||Rocks at the water entry - ZZZZZZZ boring really and yes there are many so use shoes as recommended. Remember beaches in the DR are all public so not really down to the hotel to try to "remove rocks" Its nature guys!||Paper Cups in the lobby area evening times - YUCK!!! This totally lacks any class and they go soggy and leak, your drinks also go warm. I am shocked that a Hyatt chain hotel does this, I can see that its convenient as its a busy hotel (but they all are!) and of course its fine day time/beach/pool but in a lobby bar of an evening its just poor i've never had paper cups of an evening in a lobby anywhere in the world we have travelled. We and other guests we spoke to all really disliked this and to be blunt his is the only reason we gave 4 stars instead of 5 management should address this as it really isn't classy at all and you should not have to upgrade at $50 UDS a day to get a glass as the sun club bar is the only pace they had them. ||Lack of draws/Storage in the rooms - As others observe there are no draws and lots of wasted space under desks etc where they could be provided. This is not ideal when you are stopping for 21 nights as we were there were clothes all over and had to leave loads in our cases. Room was subsequently a mess the whole time. BUT the room we had was over all really nice spacious and they accommodated our request for a kind bed and pull out for our son and we were pleasantly surprised this was a proper bed.||POSITIVES - ||Activities/Animation - ||I have never been any hotel where the daytime and evening activities were as good as here! This is the main reason we are returning. ||Every day the animation team were energetic and fun and ran every activity advertised. We really liked them (i am in my 50's so dip in and out of bits n ot an animation crazy tourist but if i were younger there was so much i would likely have taken part in). ||I have to recognise the following animation who never stopped, included everyone who wanted to join and were so full of energy all day and night - ||SANSON - (Hola Mi Nino) - We all loved this young man.....A fabulous kind fun guy i really look forward to seeing him next visit. Sanson and Yose even video called us just to check we got back to England safely which was so thoughtful given the volume of guests the hotel has each week.||YOSE - Spoke some English and would help you engage with the others, a calm caring thoughtful guy, always checking we were all OK||La Maquina- She is amazing and hilarious with all the energy and fun she shows ||Chuchu - Again really careful to ensure you were included if you wanted always fun and ready with a dance for you||Way - Good fun with the games ||All the animation were fabulous but i cant spend the whole review talking about them all! ||The kids explorer club (our son way too old sadly) was amazing, beach games, sun hat paining, pottery paining there was all sorts going on and it was of a high standard for little ones and all inclusive. Wish we had this when our son was young enough.||Beach and pool activities were many and varied but did not interfere if you wanted peach and a chill out. Yoga, Bocca, foot darts, water bikes/aerobics, dance lessons, crazy games, beach zumba, bean bag/horse shoes games etc ... The list goes on! Join in for animation funny money if you win then save it up for the auctions where you can bid for hats t shirts rum coffee etc. ||Every afternoon at the main pool there was a themed party, water shows, fun inflatables, live music, dancing, themed food/drinks etc! Absolutely Fabulous. We were fortunate enough to be here for the 4th July party wow what an effort they went to. ||Evenings there were great shows in the theatre, live music/singers in the lobby before the shows (rock show, circus show and pirate show ere great for an AI resort) then after the shows some sort of party , light shows, fire shows, silent discos, karaoke, beach party ... No excuse to be bored here. ||The animation made a huge fuss of our son who had a special birthday whilst we were here as did the staff in the Chinese restaurant ||Nightclub was fun nicely air conditioned and open 2300-0100hrs just enough! ||Many do not speak English very well (we are in a Spanish speaking country so learn a little perhaps instead of moaning!?) however, all staff would do all they could to include all nationalities and do their best to communicate and we had great fun. ||Beach -||We will only travel to this area of the DR now due to Sargassum which is awful and we are beach/sea lovers, there is no sargassum in Bayhahibe and the beach was lovely, it was well maintained and clean, they really do need to add some additional shades though they were literally all taken by about 0630hrs and frustratingly the ones on the "sun club" area sat empty but you would be moved if you tried to seek shade there.||A large area at the top for volley ball/football and games BUT be careful its man made and concrete under the sane so there were a few hard landings and injuries on the volley ball area.||Staff - ||All lovely and really appreciated you trying just a few words in spanish, they work so hard and were very happy to get a dollar tip here and there. Again a few really went out of their way to serve us well and were lovely always knew our drinks |Pool Bar staff in particular -||Alejandro - A gentle hard working man and a credit to this hotel who ensured you got your favourite drink served just right|Carlos - A lovely guy who did all he could to make you happy|Edward- (I may have miss spelt that) A smiley happy young man |Felix - Again always ensured we got our tipple ||All the pool and beach bar staff were fabulous!||Food/restaurants - ||We loved the fact that you could get a buzzer and have unlimited al a carts only draw back is you needed to go early or late for teh most popular ones but much prefer that to being limited. Italian and Chinese were our favourites but all were good. Buffet OK but didn't use them evenings Kaleidoscope for breakfast and lunch excellent with lovely staff. ||In the price bracket we paid and being regular AI travellers therE is a reason this is the only hotel in DR we have booked to return to and looking forward to 21 nights in july 2026. Take off the cost of your flight keep in mind you are in a spanish speaking country and have realistic expectations and there is no reason why you cannot have yourself a fantastic holiday here we...

We stayed at Sunscape Dominicus La Romana April 3-13. We are home now & I thought I would give a shout out to some of the resort features & the staff members who were amazing. ||Honestly, with all of the negative reviews I was really worried about coming here. I have previously stayed at Secrets Cap Cana twice, which I knew there would be no comparison & I have stayed at Dreams Macao, Onyx, Dominicus & Flora. I wouid say this resort compares with Dreams Dominicus, which is just down the street/beach.||We booked SunClub Adults Tropical Junior Suite & requested an upper floor. We were told at check-in that we were on the ground floor. We said “no” to that & I believe they would have moved us to an upper floor but we also asked if there were any upgrades available. In the end we upgraded to an ocean front room on the second floor. My goal was to see the sunrise from the room but soon learned that would not be possible due to the placement of the resort. I still enjoyed looking out at the adults only pool & the ocean each day. We loved our room!! The location was great, the bed was comfortable, the shower was amazing (I wouid like to have one like it at my home). Not all of the rooms in that category had the same type of shower head. Our room was 14247. Our room was cleaned well each day. Danilda was our housekeeper at the beginning & end of our stay & did an amazing job. I’m a lover of turn down service & having a clean room with fresh towels each night. We had amazing turndown service each night. ||We spent our time in the comfy chairs at the adults only pool. They should have more of the cushioned lounge chairs available at that pool. There was no chair game at this pool though & we had those chairs for our entire stay. We went down to the beach each afternoon for a swim & to float on our floaties in the waves. ||Yes there are rocks upon entry to the beach. There were fewer rocks at the adults only side of the beach, especially right by the rope. We wore water shoes which was a great help!! Believe me you need to bring them.||We ate breakfast at Kaleidoscope buffet I think 8/10 days. We alternated lunch between Kaleidoscope & Windows. We found that it was best to arrive when the buffets opened in order to have the best selection. I had an omelet every morning & never had to wait long. I enjoyed the cakes they made with some ice cream & a banana on the side. ||We tried Tierra for breakfast one day & for lunch one day. I didn’t care for the breakfast choices. I enjoyed the salmon at lunchtime & my husband enjoyed the chicken. We forgot to try Tierra at supper time.||We went to Tiki Taco twice. Ask for a passion fruit margarita when you go there. It was delicious 😋. We didn’t care for how the fajitas were made but I ate them the first time & they were ok. The Mexican food by the pool on Margarita Day was far better than the food at Tiki Taco. They should make their food in the same way. ||We went to Chopsticks three times. Twice for the dinner show & once for table service. We enjoyed it all 3 times. ||We went to Da Mario twice & loved it. The Margarita pizza from the kids menu is awesome!!! The buffet that they have for appetizers & dessert has enough food for your meal. There are different kinds of pizzas on the Buffett but when you order the Margarita pizza it comes out nice & hot. We also had pizza there for lunch when it’s the Kaleidoscope Buffet. The pizza was very good. We just waited until a hot one came out before getting a slice. ||We went to the pizza restaurant twice. Once for supper (it would be nice to have this open at lunchtime) & once for a late night snack. It was good but not as good as the pizza at Kaleidoscope or Da Mario.||Coco Cafe is where we started our day & ended our day with cappuccino & ice cream. ||We went to two shows: the circus & rock show. We enjoyed both shows. My husband went to the magic show & liked it. I guess the Retro Show that happened one night in the plaza was good. I wish there was an explanation on the app of what these shows are so that we wouid know. If we had a description we may have stayed out to watch it. Also, we went to the White Party with the expectation of watching a fire show, that we were told happened the week before. We waited & waited & there was no fire show. Even our Butler, Alba told us there was always a fire show. That was disappointing. ||Many thanks goes out to Thalia Mesa, Alba (our butler), Santa, Ruth & Jennyfer at Coco Cafe, Danilda & our servers (see photos) at Kaleidoscope. ||We enjoyed our stay!!! I worried for nothing. If you are on the fence go to the resort & give it a try. Hopefully, you will be...

Upfront, we have had well over 12 trips to the Dominican (last 20+ years). We have been to Puerto Plata (many times) and Punta Cana (even more times). Punta Cana has traditionally been our favorite of all the DR resort areas but we decided to try the La Romana area this time. We are Canadian and generally have a “go with the flow attitude” but certainly don’t mind raising an issue if we encounter one. A cracked tile by the pool or in our room is not an “issue” for us.||Just to level set ..... while we have stayed at a wide range of DR resorts over the years, our most recent trips have been to the Royalton Punta Cana, Now Larimar Punta Cana, and Majestic Colonial (all 5 star). In all cases we have had a Diamond Club or VIP Club room/amenities. ||Our trip started off fantastic. Pickup at the airport with Nexustours was seamless. Took about an hour on the bus from PC airport to the resort. The check-in process at the SunClub area was fast and our attendant (Talia) could not have been nicer. We had a pool view, 2nd floor room in the adults only building (14). ||The VIP lounge was a nice welcome with cold drinks and snacks. ||ROOM|The room was a bit “dated” but otherwise was quite large and had everything we needed. There was an in-room jetted hot tub that we did not use. Spacious walk-in shower that was great. Very small toilet stall with glass "privacy door". Nice (but dated) sitting area in the room with a sofa and table, should you want room service, and a great spacious balcony with a small table and 2 chairs overlooking the adults pool and beach. Overall, the room was great. King bed was comfortable with a great assortment of pillows and very comfortable bedding. Our housekeeper kept our room SPOTLESS with daily housekeeping and nightly turn-down service. ||FOOD/RESTAURANTS|My wife found the food to be as good as any other DR resort (and maybe better). I was a bit “off” for my whole trip with a mild upset stomach. Breakfast was mostly at the buffet on the beach. Selection was varied and good. Then we’d pop up to the Coffee shop each morning for a great Latte and a muffin. The coffee was REALLY good. We ate lunch at Tierra a couple of times (SunClub only) and the salmon was great. We aren't huge "lunch eaters" and mostly had salads or fruit at the buffet. A couple of days we ate poolside at the small restaurant under the beach buffet. Hamburgers were quite good and fries were welcomed. The servers in the Kaleidoscope buffet (where we had most of our breakfasts and lunches) were spectacular. For dinner, we liked the Japanese Teppanyaki as well as the Asian sit-down. The other restaurants were nice …. Mexican was decent, Tierra was certainly the best. Food presentation in all the restaurants was spectacular. The restaurants had amazing décor. They rivalled anything you’d see in a 5 star restaurant or on a cruise ship. ||A HUGE shoutout to Jhonaykel who looked after us for the 2 weeks at the Kaleidoscope buffet. A STANDOUT.||VIP AREA |We also loved the SunClub VIP lounge, where you can get light snacks as well as a wide assortment of top shelf liquor. Beer is always cold and plentiful. Willams was a fantastic bartender. We spent almost every night in this area (inside and outside) and it was also quite lovely. ||BEACH|We typically don’t lounge near the beach but we always love having two long walks each day. The aqua blue water was fantastic but the beach itself is quite small and the walk is quite short. There are rocks off in the water but it never bothered us as we don’t go into the salt water much anyway.||OVERALL|We are well travelled Dominican resort people, and we understand that the Sunscape Dominicus is not a high-end five-star resort … you might be able to find something much nicer …. just expect to pay two times the cost. But when considering value for money, it’s a great place. I would recommend SunClub but to each his own.|It was a safe, clean and beautiful resort with decent (if not quite gourmet) food and cold beer and drinks with fabulous people. ||P.S. One last thing we have to mention…. we are both animal lovers and thoroughly enjoyed the resident cats (and even moreso the kittens). We fell in love with all of them. We hope that guests continue to be kind to all the animals and give them treats. And we also encourage the staff to show the cats and kittens kindness as well. The ducks, peacock, peahen, and turtles were also a...
