Visited on a cruise ship excursion out of Puerta Plata. Located on rough dirt road but well worth the trip as it is a very beautiful lodge, plenty of gardens, nature walks, small pools and decks with lounge chairs. Also plenty of steps so it is not for the accessibility challenged. Visited for just a tour and lunch but I seriously want to go back and stay in one of the very comfortable-looking rooms. Food is basic, much of it grown on site and reflecting traditional Dominican cuisine. For those looking for a restful break from civilization, with little to do but walk in nature or...

El Gallo is one of the best kept secrets on the North Coast, and I don't want it to be a secret any longer. The villas are charmingly and comfortably furnished. When the morning light shines through the beautiful wood, it glows ruby-red. The food is absolutely fantastic. Locally grown, beautifully presented, and tons of it! Bryn and Ernesto are gracious and generous hosts, and their staff are lovely and talented and so very kind. I wish I could spend every weekend...
