If you’re staying in the next few weeks and want to know what to bring and expect, you can skip to the end of the review <3 We stayed from April 6th to 13th through Sunwing, originally had booked the gardenview which overall was fine. 2 days after we upgraded to beach view, which comparatively was better. In terms of rooms: - there as mosquitos in the rooms, MANY of them. Personally we found there were more in the gardenview room than the ocean view. - tub and sink drains are pretty clogged, it takes about an hour after one person using the washroom for the other to. - toilet doesn’t immediately flush in one go, even if it’s just liquid. - during the rain the ceiling LEAKS. Some of the toilets also do. - both rooms had AC issues where you could not change the temperature, and sometimes it would just stop working all together. Our last 3 days were without AC. In terms of room cleanliness it really depends on your cleaner, we had one that cleaned VERY well, and two that didn’t clean at all. She would make the beds, messily mop, and leave. I also think from my experience at the people that came with me that they may have a shortage in towels? They would take our towels and return them hours later. Someone else on the resort had told me when they needed an extra towel and pushed for one, they were given a dirty one with brown marks on it. While I don’t blame people for not knowing English, the language barrier did create some issues with cleaners and maintenance. I got by using Google translate with the cleaners, however the maintenance people never stuck around long enough for me to use translate. Wifi worked fine in both of my rooms on the balcony’s but nowhere else in the room. Buffet: - most nights they always have one pork meal, beef, chicken, rice, and beans. - the buffet is usually very crowded and while the waiters/waitresses are AMAZING (so kind) they would often be too busy to give us water/coffee. If/once they realized they would apologize. - the first two days the staff would thoroughly clean the tables and chairs and then seat people’s however once people ignored staff and started taking their own seats the cleanliness got worse. - ants and other insects are constantly on the tables :( while no one’s fault I did personally have issues enjoying food because of it. - most of the food tasted great. The snack bar was pretty good too. Drinks: - there are a lot of variety of drinks - you can ask for stronger drinks, or lighter drinks :) - no complaints here The pool is clean, and the beach also was pretty clean. Staff was up early morning picking up the seaweed. The staff was like family, I have no complaints with them. All three restaurants were great, Mexican staff even took shots with us! I’ve tried to provide as many pictures as I could. If you’re travelling within the next few weeks I suggest: - bring your own small/light blanket, their quilt isn’t very comfortable. - bring a room mosquito repellent, 90% of bug bites happen under the covers :( - stay away from the night market, it’s a scam. - if you care or enjoy cats, bring some wet or dry food. There are so many newborn kittens and hungry mama kitties there. If you have any pet bowls or tents that you’re looking to throw away, bring them too. - bring your own shampoo, conditioner, body wash and loofah. - bring containers so you can bring food back to your room and/or pack food for the airport from the resort. - bring flushable wipes like dude wipes:) - bring pepto and gravol, lots of people had upset tummies. - if you’re a young woman in a relationship travelling on your own, or just a young woman not looking to have any intimate relations, just be a little careful. In my own experience there are locals that take your kindness in the wrong way and will push you to go clubbing with them and will tell you that your partner does not need to know.

A Surprisingly Well-Spent Day at Hotel Marien – Excellent Value and Service Although I did not stay overnight at Hotel Marien, I recently spent the day there and felt compelled to share a detailed review of the experience. This feedback is based entirely on a day pass visit during low season, on a quiet and sunny Saturday. Reception & First Impressions From the moment we arrived, the reception team made a wonderful impression. Friendly, informative, and genuinely welcoming, they explained everything clearly: what’s included, what’s allowed, and the hours of access (from 11:00 AM to 5:30 or 6:00 PM). We were offered towels right away, and overall the check-in process felt very smooth and professional. Ambience & Atmosphere Given the time of year, the atmosphere was peaceful and relaxed — no loud music, no overbearing animation team. This gave guests the freedom to truly unwind or choose to join in on light activities if they wished. The overall vibe was calm and unpretentious, which made it feel like a proper escape. Facilities & Pool Area Finding available sunbeds with an umbrella was initially a bit of a challenge, as some guests had “reserved” spots by leaving towels and disappearing — something the hotel explicitly discourages. However, thanks to the helpful staff, we were promptly assisted and found a shaded spot with a clear view of the pool. The pool itself deserves special mention. It is large, clean, and features a gentle, ramp-style entrance that could be particularly beneficial for people with mobility challenges. While I didn’t see guests with disabilities that day, this detail suggests thoughtful accessibility — something I hope the hotel will continue to promote more actively. Dining Experience Lunch was included in the day pass and was both varied and fresh. While the presentation lacked decorative flair, the food quality was impressive. Options were abundant — including several appealing vegetarian and even vegan-friendly choices — which is a rare and welcome detail in all-inclusive settings. The service during lunch was attentive and courteous. Waiters regularly refilled water glasses and offered drinks with a smile, adding to the overall pleasant experience. One small but notable downside: the coffee. Unfortunately, only basic black coffee was available — a cappuccino or espresso option would have elevated the meal significantly. Snack Bar Throughout the day, the snack bar was a highlight. I particularly enjoyed the freshly made brownies, seasonal fruits, and burgers. By the late afternoon, however, only hot dogs were available — a slight disappointment after such a strong offering earlier in the day. Drinks & Cocktails The selection of drinks was excellent for a day pass. There were recognizable international brands and well-prepared cocktails. My personal favorite was the Tequila Sunrise. For those avoiding alcohol, the non-alcoholic cocktail options were limited (just three), but still quite enjoyable. Cleanliness & Details One small suggestion would be to improve the tidiness around the pool area, especially when it comes to promptly clearing empty plastic cups. These minor details, if polished, would align better with the otherwise high standards of service and presentation. Final Thoughts For a price of $54 per person, the experience exceeded expectations. The food, drinks, facilities, and service combined to create a genuinely enjoyable and relaxing day. While I cannot speak for the hotel rooms or overnight service, I can confidently say that Hotel Marien offers one of the best day-pass experiences in Puerto Plata for the price. It’s proof that sometimes, small thoughtful details — and a genuinely caring staff — can turn a simple day into something memorable.

I booked a last-minute vacation from March 12-19th with my daughter and granddaughter. We arrived early at the hotel before check-in so they let us access the hotel however our room was only ready around 4PM (check in should be 3PM). Front of staff recommended we upgrade to VIP which included for $175US and is supposed to include: pillow menu options, robe, slippers, rum bottle, private beach access and you can book as many times as you want in the A la carte restaurants. However, we had to fight to get everything we signed up and they gave us a run for our money. DON’T UPGRADE it’s not work it. Front desk staff were rude and not very accommodating. We were really tired and grumpy after they changed our rooms twice and we had to lug our own luggage from room to room. Our room was dated and smelled musty. We also discovered bugs in our room and had the worst time trying to sleep as I found 2 in my bed (we were in the 3000 block in case you want to know). The shower was very powerful and very hot (be careful the sprayer in the shower is extremely powerful and we flooded our bathroom the first night (you’ll understand what I mean haha). Hotel: Overall cleanliness was good. Bars were ok, bartenders were friendly however the bars carried mostly no name liquor and syrup slushy drinks but they had lots of cold water accessible. Staff (waiters) were good and very friendly. Entertainment was lacking. The evening show was only from 9:30-10:00 with the exception of a singer at the different bars in the evening but she was only there from 8-8:30 (she’s very good) however we found the evenings long. Shade at the pool and beach was very hard to come by. There is definitely NOT ENOUGH shade for everyone!!!!!! People reserve the shaded spots by 5am!!! Yikes just too early for me. There are trees on the beach for shade but no palapas in sight. The pool was beautiful and had the most gorgeous view of the mountains however the chairs were broken and dirty and had NO SHADE. Beach is ok but I was very disappointed in the amount of garbage floating around the water and the waste along the “public” part of the beach just a few meters from the hotel beach front. Food was very good and kept at the right temperature (cold/hot) and had a very good variety everyday. A la carte restaurants were very good. The best is the Brazilian! There are lots of cats on the property “which we love” however some were very sick, injured and bleeding. It was very hard to watch and not be able to help them. They need to be neutered and spayed and have them vaccinated and dewormed. Do not buy gifts in the hotel gift shops as they overcharged for everything and price gouged us on everything we purchased sadly. We found out the hard way once we went in to Puerto Plata for a shopping day. We did the Monkeyland excursion and loved it very much. Highly recommend.

Our stay was Christmas eve to NYE, 2018. Transat. Overall: nice resort, walkable, not great for teens, not great for food sensitivities/labeling but you won't get sick from the food or water, very LGBTQ friendly, primarily Canadians and some Europeans (Sweden, NL, Germany).

Meals: A la cartes were all amazing! Especially loved the Brazilian, followed by Mexican. Mediterainian was more Italian than Greek, and the apps and desert were great but chicken and salmon mains weren’t great. Buffett was a bit repetitive and tired. Not very easy to eat there with food allergies and sensitivities, but enough not to starve and some neat local things at times. Service is great. Wines are great that are included, and you can buy great prices bottles on site too at the restaurants, wine bar or duty free. Disappointed that the snack bar that was open from 10 pm to 6 am only ever had fries. The burger patties had gluten in them. Water in the restaurants as well as coffee were excellent. Ice was completely safe. Disappointed that the site and map showed a lobster house that seems to no longer exist. Disappointed with the quality of the shrimp and lobster at the buffet. Really great pork, chicken and beef options. Fresh bread looked amazing but we’re gluten free. Pizza seemed popular. Disappointed by the lack of cleanliness at the morning omelette station. Great hard boiled eggs. Drinks were super disappointing. Had better at 4 star resorts in Cuba. Maybe should have switched to VIP for better drinks alone.

Entertainment: no foam party the week we were there, apparently this is every other week The shows featured incredible dancers Disco on site was excellent but closed just before or around 1:30, pretty early especially when the last bar after closes at 2. A disco outside of the resort gate included a casino and was very popular with the locals Burger and pizza joint at more $ as well as gift shops all at the hotel entrance/near the gym

Rooms maids were amazing and very accommodating, providing us with an extra stocked mini bar and fresh flowers every day for a small pesos tip Upon arrival we were told ground floor, but we gave the front desk manager a Christmas tip and got a ground floor, VIP room in block 8 facing the ravine, where there were local people fishing (harmless and quiet). At 4 am we returned to our room one morning to find our AC flooding our entrance, which was fixed for about 10 min before breaking again. We set up an ice bucket on a coffee table and it was full by 8 am. It took 2 service staff 1.5 hours to fix and we couldn’t leave the room, meaning we were up all night and missed breakfast that morning. Front desk staff said they would send a gift but they did not. Nice bath products and had no other issues. Tons of water pressure in our room. The first night the room was so humid and damp we sweat through lots of clothes and had to make the room freezing to dry out the humidity.

Pool: lots going on during the day but very hard to get a nice spot if you aren’t out by 9 am. People reserve seats the night before despite there being signs not to (typical, but annoying) Probably the best bar, and our block was nice and close to it Great music playing very clean and chemically treated nightly Lots of nice lights at night both in the pool and on the bridges

Beach: lots of chairs to choose from and very spread out Haggled lots on the first day to get braids or purchase weed or alch, but we declined and were left alone after that Really nice sand beaches and well maintained despite super high winds and yellow flags up during the whole trip on the beach. Red flags on one of the days meant no access Nice vip cabana area that could be used in the evening by anyone when the bar closed Closet bar was the snack bar, which had lots of nice seating a view of the busy beach volleyball court and the water Nice to have 2 a la cartes by the water Ocean was super warm and fun to swim in the huge waves Nice walk either way leads you to sand...

Marien Puerto Plata: My Unmatched Escape

After visiting Marien Puerto Plata more than five times, I can confidently say that it’s not just a hotel; it’s the destination for me. Each stay has been nothing short of perfect, and it’s the one place I always return to when I want to relax, recharge, and experience the best the Caribbean has to offer.

What truly sets Marien Puerto Plata apart, and what makes me come back year after year, is the exceptional service and the warmth of the staff. The team here is truly the heart of the hotel. From the moment I arrive, I’m greeted like family, and their genuine hospitality makes every visit feel personal. Whether it’s the front desk staff remembering my name, the waiters greeting me like an old friend, or the housekeeping team ensuring my room is spotless and welcoming, the staff here go above and beyond to make my stay unforgettable. Their attention to detail and their commitment to providing outstanding service are what keep me coming back.

One of the aspects that makes Marien Puerto Plata stand out even more is the sense of safety and security. As a frequent visitor, it’s incredibly important to me that I feel safe and comfortable throughout my stay, and the resort excels in this area. The security team is top-notch and works tirelessly to ensure guests feel secure without being intrusive. From the well-lit, monitored entrances to the vigilant staff patrolling the grounds, I always feel at ease knowing that my safety is a priority. The presence of the security team is discreet yet reassuring, and their professionalism gives me peace of mind whether I’m dining, exploring the resort, or relaxing by the pool.

The resort itself is a paradise. I’ve stayed in various room categories over the years, and each one has been spacious, impeccably clean, and thoughtfully designed for maximum comfort.

The culinary offerings at Marien Puerto Plata are another reason I keep returning. From the impressive buffet selection to the à la carte restaurants, the food is always fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I especially love the local Dominican dishes, which give me the authentic taste of the island every time. The variety is exceptional, and I never get tired of exploring the different options—from seafood delicacies to grilled meats and fresh tropical fruits.

One of the highlights of every stay at Marien Puerto Plata is the entertainment. The resort's dancers and singers bring the evenings to life with vibrant performances that never fail to impress. From the energetic dance shows to the live music, the entertainment team truly knows how to engage the audience and create an unforgettable atmosphere. I’ve spent many nights watching the dazzling performances under the stars, and it always adds that extra touch of magic to the experience. The variety of shows ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether you're in the mood for a lively dance performance, a themed party, or live musical acts.

Beyond the physical beauty of the resort, it’s the overall atmosphere that keeps me coming back. Marien Puerto Plata offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Whether it’s taking part in a themed dinner, enjoying a sunset cocktail at the beach bar, or just taking in the stunning views, there’s always something to enjoy. The friendly, professional team is always ready to help, ensuring every moment is stress-free and memorable. It’s this incredible service, combined with the beautiful surroundings and entertainment, that makes the resort feel like a second home.

Over the years, I’ve made memories here that I’ll cherish forever, from special family vacations to peaceful solo getaways. Marien Puerto Plata has never disappointed, and I know it will always be my go-to destination. If you’re looking for a place where service, beauty, comfort, entertainment, and security meet in perfect harmony, look no further. For me, it’s the only...
