And I do mean rough! Santo Domingo de los Colorados (or tsachilas) may not be a great tourist hotspot, but the Grand Hotel Santo Domingo was definitely a jewel! Excellent and friendly staff were very helpful. Rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable. I didn't get to check out the Salon Ecologico because it was reserved for a private event the night I was there, but it looked awesome. The grounds were immaculate despite the surrounding location. ||||The pool area is absolutely beautiful and everyone else seemed to enjoy it (I didn't want to pack wet swimming trunks for the next two days). For lunch before I departed, I had an excellent chicken and bacon sandwich (photo provided). ||||Each floor has a shared balcony area with great views of the grounds and comfy sofas and chairs. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better hotel for the night. ||||And just because I can't find this restaurant on trip advisor... There's an amazing Argentinian steakhouse, Che's Parilla I believe, right down the road. One of the best steaks...
Read moreTravelers should be aware that this hotel is almost nothing like you see on their website. The rooms are dumps, worse than even the lowest quality hotels in the US, Canada or Western Europe. The photos on the website are from some other hotel. Room looks like a youth hostel from the 80s. Bed and pillows are hard as rock. No tea or coffee in room. Also no cups. Restaurant itself is actually beautiful, but the breakfast consisted of some fruit and two types of bread roll. You can request other things. Two stars given for the following reasons: ||1) Air conditioner, though very old, worked well.||2) Shower basically worked and there was soap and shampoo.||3) Door lock worked.||4) Sort of a neat looking outdoor pool, though I didn't get close.||5) Safe parking behind||Santo Domingo is a stop off, or you are here for buisness, but as the best hotel in town this is not going to satisfy Americans, Canadians...
Read moreWe stayed at the Grand Hotel enroute from Mompiche (the coast) to Quito (for the airport). The junior suite room was perfect for us. Nice bed with lots of pillows. Sitting room and table / chairs. The best part of the room though was the bathroom. Modern. Extremely clean with one of the hottest showers in Ecuador. Lots of great water pressure - we could stay in there for hours. The people at the front desk were gracious and spoke English. Breakfast was typical for an Ecuadorian hotel - nothing special. We'd stay here again just for the shower and...
