If you sleep through anything, noise doesn't bother you, and closing the pool in the middle of the day isn't important, skip this review. (But don't order the German Sausage!) This review is made to help the people who are visiting Vilcabamba just for rest and relaxation.
I should have listened to the reviewer who posted a warning of the paper thin walls. Actually It's as though there are no walls. You can hear everyone as though they are sitting on the bed with you talking and not just from the room next door, but other rooms, people walking by... We reserved for 3 nights but left the first morning. The place was fully booked so a new guest at the desk was happy to hear we were leaving. We told him about the noise and he said "No problem, I'll just use my earplugs". Another UK guest that checked in the same time as us, asked how the night went. The room adjacent to him had someone start a "Skype" conversation after midnight, that lasted for over an hour, and of course he could hear every word.
Of course you have all the people who aren't bothered by noise and/or are not there for R&R (Rest and Relaxation) Many enjoy the bar at night and you get to hear them as they make their way back to their rooms. If that's your lifestyle you won't have any of those problems. You can get up late and go relax by the pool - if it's open.
The pool doesn't seem to have a filtration system, although they seem to work at trying to keep it clean. A team of 3 men began scrubbing about 11:00 am and by noon (Friday) they put up a pool closed sign and began dumping gallons of chemical in the pool. I heard many of the people discussing their disappointment that they were unlucky to not be able to use the pool (or the area around the pool).
If you're thinking of a cabin, you should know that the cabins are duplexes, and the gravel path that leads to all the walking/hiking paths winds in and around the cabins so you pass within just a foot or two of these cabins, crunching on the gravel as you go for a walk.
Very annoying to travel 5 hours in a van and have to go back by bus another 5 hours the next day, but the alternative of staying for a few more days without sleep or rest was not going to happen. The food was not bad, but the German curry sausage was a joke. No way you could convince me the mounds of sauce were not overly sweet ketchup.
In conclusion, vilcabamba yes, this hosteria no.
Stayed...
Read moreWe went to the Izhcayluma Eco-Resort for the first time for our 12th Anniversary. We were there for 3 nights/4 days. It was exactly what we needed and more than we hoped for! The location of the Eco-Resort is perfection. It's tranquil, peaceful, calming and relaxing. The staff was friendly and always helpful. They smile and laugh with each other and that showed that they enjoy working at the Resort immensely. There was no request they weren't happy to fulfill. Peter and Dieter the owners were the best hosts we've ever experienced! They actually treat you like friends and like they truly care that you enjoy yourself. Both were on hand almost the entire time. But even when they weren't we felt very cared for by everyone else as well. The craft beers were fantastic. And the restaurant food is all amazing! Each dish we tried was delicious and were good size portions as well. I can't get enough of their homemade spaetzle noodles in the Stroganoff! Absolutely a must try! My husband enjoyed a massage and I got a much needed manicure by Maritza. His massage was his favorite so far in Ecuador. And Maritza was gentle and very sweet, along with working at the Resort for over 20 years! The pool was clean and cool and refreshing. There are games and books and many places to sit or rest in a hammock and enjoy the glorious views. The room was spotless and the bed and pillows extremely comfortable. Along with soft sheets and towels. When I became ill with a migraine the staff brought food for me to our room. The water in the shower made our skin the softest it's been in a long time. At night you can see so many stars and that was a delight that we don't enjoy living in a city. We were sad to leave and we know we will be back again hopefully soon. We will be recommending the Izhcayluma Eco-Resort to everyone!!! Thanks again Peter and Dieter! You both are...
