Kotka Farm — Hotel in Saaremaa vald

When I was a kid we sorted garbage, composted what we could and saved water by washing dishes in a basin of standing water. I guess at the time it was more about remnants of the soviet times when there wasn't much of anything but as time went on, it turned into the green and right thing to do. Vacationing tends to be a rather messy business when it comes to that - a lot of garbage generated and disposed of inadequately. So it was a really nice experience to have an actual manual on how to sort garbage in Kotka Farm - some goes to the chickens, some to the forest and all packaging gets recycled or burned. The manual also includes some history of the place, hints on what to do around here and so on. You can rent a bike, go on a fishing trip or have sauna (there are even beers in the fridge for a reasonable price). I generally had the feel that this place is not run to generate maximum revenue, but more of a side hustle without sacrificing the hosts values and principles. Feels like a visit to a friend more than just a lodging. Want to have sauna when the host is already heading to bed? Sure, heat it up yourself, we're all grown adults and can manage a fire in a sauna. At the same time the host is very helpful and generally a super nice person. She admits that it's not the most interesting part of Saaremaa to be in, but there's beautiful nature to bike around and the few days we stayed there were definitely one of the highlights...
