Spent a night at hotel Majvik in June 2013. Booked a single room at 137 Euro per night, primarily because hotel near Helsinki city centre were either totally booked or quoting prices around 175 Euro per night!||||Checked in late in the evening around 22:00 Hrs and was quite pleased by the super quick check-in done by the only staff member who was managing the bar and the reception at the same time. Was quite a feat seeing him running around, keeping customers at the bar and me at reception engaged and comfortable. Have not experienced that kind of enthusiasm with staff in the service industry for a long time, especially in Europe.||||The decor of the hotel is a bit old and one can easily see that this indeed is a conference hotel. Will conference rooms being central to different sections of the floor and then some rooms kind of around / near by them. The room by itself was okay. A small single bed, TV, wireless/wired internet connection on the house, a chair and wardrobe. The bath was borring. Too crammed and really old(eg. curtains), though every thing worked well and can't complain on that.||||Breakfast was included in the rent and was good. Restaurant was impressive with good view of the lake (if you pick a right table).||||A key aspect to be noted is that this hotel is not very close to public transport options. Closest local train stop is Masala (approx 2km away), where your probability of finding a waiting taxi is 1%. If you find one, it would cost you approx 10 Euros to reach the hotel. Closest long distance train station is Kirkkonummi, where your chances of finding a waiting taxi is a significantly better 25% :-) From here, it would cost you approx 22 Euros to reach the hotel. And the train journey from Helsinki Central Station to Kirkonummi will cost between 6.5 and 8 Euros based on whether you take a local train or a long distance train. Travel time is approx 30 mins in long distance trains and 45 mins or more in case of local train. And for those of you want to party late night in Helsinki down town, note that the last train(local train) to Kirkonummi leaves Helsinki Central Station at 1:40 am.||||Over all, feel that this is a decent option for groups of people who are attending conferences in this hotel (this is indeed a 'conference hotel'). But not the right choice for tourists or solo business travellers unless you are travelling by car. Comparing the room & location to my experience in central Europe and other parts of nordics, felt that the room...
Read moreWe stayed here for business because all hotels in Helsinki were booked out. The rooms are "adequate" and very much have a "hostel" rather than "hotel" feel to them, perhaps we got the cheapest rooms (!). Very basic, single beds, empty mini bar, but clean and LOADS of power outlets. I found it difficult to sleep, too much light came into the room from the windows. Even though there are blinds the curtains were thin, but this could also have been the time difference from the UK affecting me rather than the light.||||Despite this, it must be pointed out that the hotel is set in beautiful countryside, next to a lake, in a beautiful park. Its a very restful situation, the bar has a pool table, it has the feel of a holiday resort. The Wifi strength in the rooms was amazing, no login was required even though they supplied login details. Also, the staff were extremely chirpy and friendly. When we arrived straight from the airport, we had missed lunch and went to the bar which was empty, the staff in reception quickly came over to see if we needed help and were wiling to make sandwiches etc . for us. Also when we returned later with our laptops they came over to help us find the best places to sit with connection to power, sounds daft but these little things make the stay more pleasant. Bizarrely though, on checkout they had a major fault with their payments system and could not accept any non-Finnish Credit Cards, which was "interesting"!||||It is an expensive taxi ride from the city (approx 50 euros), but seemed very popular with crowds attending conferences. Breakfast was simple buffet style, a few warm items and a lot of cold items. Coffee/tea etc. was all self service. As expected of a Finnish Hotel, it ha a Swimming...
Read moreWe chose this hotel about 25 km outside Helsinki because most others were booked up for the World Athletics Championships. The Majvik is situated in a rural town right on a rail stop on the intercity going west from Helsinki. We stayed in a sort of cabin with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and living room, a water closet, and a bathroom/sauna combination. The setting was idyllic with a small park and a pleasant lake. The main building was full of business services and conference rooms, along with smaller guestrooms. ||The hotel staff, while generally competent, didn't seem prepared for tourists. We had some difficulty communicating to them that we needed two separate rooms for the two families that had arrived to stay, and also for using laundry facilities. The staff also was unfamiliar with how to operate the sauna, although we solved that problem. Nevertheless the staff was quite accommodating. ||We found that the train was a very convenient way to go to Helsinki, as the station was about 1 km away. Marsala itself has...
