Möhkön Rajakartano is hotel - or more precisely an inn or an apartment hotel - in the village of Möhkö, 23 kilometers from the center of Ilomantsi. The road from Ilomantsi to Möhkö is asphalted. Only the last 800-900 meters before the hotel is narrow unpaved gravel road. The distance from Petkeljärvi National Park is 13 kilometers, from historical Öykkösenvaara battlegrounds 6 kilometers and from Möhkö Ironworks (the museum area) only 1 kilometer. There are walking trails between the hotel and Möhkö Ironworks and also between the hotel and Petkeljärvi National Park. So the location is perfect. ||Möhkö is the easternmost village in the continental European Union and Möhkön Rajakartano is the easternmost public accommodation in the continental European Union, near the Russian border. So this is a perfect place for those seeking geographical extremes.||The riverside location is very beautiful and peaceful. There is a good swimming pier along the river. They also have a wood-heated riverside sauna. You get a free sauna bathing (1½ hours) there if you book at least 3 nights in the hotel. They have one rowing-boat, too, and it is free to use it. The river is a very good fishing spot but you need a special fishing permit. You can buy it online or from the hotel. We loved both hiking, swimming and fishing.||The suite named Melaselkä is located upstairs in the main building. Also some smaller apartments are situated in the main building but most apartments are located in a separate building. Every apartment in the separate building has an own entrance but notice that some apartments are located upstairs and you have to use steep stairs. I could stay in any rooms. Sometimes there may be problems with hotel booking engines and in that case it is a good idea to contact the hotel directly and ask a free room.||We stayed in the separate building in the upstairs apartment named Sikki. It is a smaller (45 square meters) apartment for four people. We had two bedrooms, a kitchen and a very small bathroom. There wasn't any shampoo in our bathroom but liquid hand soap was available. Our kitchen was well equipped. We had a fridge, a microwave oven, an electric kettle, a steamer and an electric wok. We also asked a portable induction cooker in advance and we got it. Tableware and linen were included in the room price. ||There was a heat wave in Finland when we stayed in Möhkön Rajakartano. Outside temperature was 30 degrees Celsius every day. Luckily nights were a bit cooler and we had insect nets in our ventilation windows. We also got a portable fun but unfortunately it wasn't a cooling fun. We really missed a cooling desk fun.||The landlady and the landlord have owned this hotel complex since 2001. Earlier it was a border guard housing. At least the landlady has Karelian roots and the hotel has a traditional Karelian interior. The landlady and the landlord work together in the hotel. The service was extremely kind and heartful, more down-to-earth than purely professional. So we really loved this place and we could stay here again in the future. But don't expect any modern or luxury hotel. This is a nice and rustic countryside hotel...
Read moreAfter a week, 7 nights at Möhkön Rajakartano I feel really sad but also happy to face leaving this place. It has been a real treat! I could say so many things, but let´s take the most important ones: the overall atmosphere, the hospitality and kindness of the owners, the breakfast! The Sauna! The river! The border zone that I was lucky to visit with a local guide, on his boat and then enjoying a heavy duty walk to the beautiful and untouched surroundings in a dreamy landscape in between Finland and Russia! A special permission is needed. The droppings after a bear on the road to the village nearby. Coming home to my suite at Möhkön Rajakartano after the days experiencing the easternmost village in Finland, Möhkö, has been a real joy. The breakfast I would love to recommend: oat porridge, homemaid dessert cream made on berries the hosts pick up in the woods near by, fresh blueberries on top of that, the traditional Carelian pasties Elvi bakes in the kitchen in the main building, salmon etc according to season I am sure but what ever you get here, is delicious, and prepared with love and care. There is nothing artificial around here. I have stayed in many beautiful hotels around the world including Tokyo, Sao Paolo but still, this is one of the most memorable stays ever, very homey, a kind of rustic boutique hotel Carelian style. I can imagine staying here in wintertime must be magic, if one loves skiing, the nature and the tranquility, it must be unbeatable. Be prepared to meet yourself. As to sights of Möhkö, besides of the nature, it is all about the Second World War, all the marks after battles, and soldiers who lost their lives, the victories and the losses. It kind of gives the village and Möhkön Rajakartano an epic atmosphere. I stayed in the suite on the upper floor in the main building, with an electric sauna, and if you stay a week or longer, you get 40 % discount to the prices including a chance to enjoy the traditional sauna by the river. If you are not into preparing your dinners by yourself, please talk to the owners and maybe they can arrange also dinner on a daily basis for your stay. I highly recommend this place for anyone loving a special treat. Easiest way to get to Möhkö is to take a flight to Joensuu, and then rent a car and get lost in serenity of the Carelian landscape. If you do not have a car, picking up you at the airport can certainly be arranged one way or another. It is my picture after a week at Möhkön Rajakartano that pretty much everything is possible to arrange, according to your needs (but noise and stress). Would love to stay here for a month, writing and thinking, walking and talking in a...
Read moreThis family run holiday resort was perfect for me. While I like to get out into the countryside in Finland, I tend not to do so very often because many summer cottages have only the most basic facilities. This place was spot on for my needs. Each self-contained apartment was fully equipped and very comfortable indeed. They are ideal to rent with a group of friends. The location is very remote, excellent for country hiking. The resort also has a very traditional smoke sauna and is a short walk from the local town.||||Catering deserves a special mention as every meal was outstanding! All of the Finnish delicacies were served - bear, raindeer, salmon, you name it, we had it. Definitely a real treat after a long hike. I will probably have another holiday there, for the food above...
