Lapland Hotel Pallas is a traditional Lappish hotel for hiking, mountain biking, skiing and cross-country skiing. This log hotel was built in 1948 and it is situated between several fells in the end of the road in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. It is easy to come here also by public transport. I took a night train from Helsinki to Kolari and then a train connection bus from Kolari railway station to Lapland Hotel Pallas.||Nature, views and clearly marked hiking trails (both short and long) are the best part of this hotel. Reindeer are wandering around the hotel. Hiking trails (and cross-country skiing tracks in winter) start from the corner of the hotel. I especially loved hiking to Palkaskero, Pallaskero, Taivaskero and Laukukero. I will write more specific hiking recommendations in a separate review of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The reception and the front door are closed after 11 p.m. So if you want to have a night hike under the midnight sun (as I did) you have to ring a doorbell or call and a night shift worker will open the door for you. ||The breakfast buffet was more than excellent. It included all normal items but also many local specialties, e.g. spruce shoot fruitie, lingonberry vanilla smoothie, reindeer live pate, beetroot hummus, dried cranberries, bilberry-blackberry powder, spruce tip powder and apple-cloudberry jam. There was a waffle station there, too, and you could make your own waffles there. Actually the restaurant of the hotel is one of the best restaurants in Lapland for dining. I will write a separate restaurant review of it.||The weak part of this hotel is condition of the rooms. They are quite cozy but past and threadbare. Cleaning seems to be good but you see dents and other traces of use everywhere. Besides, my bathroom was very small and there wasn't any separate bidet shower there. I could hear water flowing in pipelines but otherwise my sleep quality was very good. A ventilation window with an insect nest was good. This hotel is very down-to-earth. You can stay here without any big problems and you can enjoy your stay very much but don't expect any luxury room. You may be disappointed if you have visited Lapland Hotels in big cities (Helsinki, Oulu, Kuopio, Tampere) earlier. They are extremely stylish and rooms are in good condition there. However, Lapland Hotel Pallas may also be a paradise if you don't...
Read moreWhere do I even start? The Tui staff are fantastic from the minute you get to the UK airport, meet your reps at Kittila airport until you check in back at the airport when you sadly have to go home! If you want to have fun in the snow, experience so many new things and do all of this in a relaxed, friendly and absolutely beautiful environment then I cannot recommend this place enough. From taster sessions to sledging to slides made from the snowy hills, toasted marshmallows, beery juice, local biscuits, fun and games in the evening and on every trip! Then you can pay extra for trips for full snow mobile, husky and reindeer experiences which were totally fantastic experiences and worth the money in my personal opinion, we didn't do the reindeer the other two were fantastic trips. |The hotel staff are all so friendly and brilliant and so very helpful. |The place is so idyllic in the middle of a national park with nothing but phenomenal views everywhere you look. The rooms are basic but comfortable and with all the snow outside and your slippers you will be very comfortable. |There are people everywhere in pyjamas, you could easily get away with packing base layes, pyjamas and slippers and just some clothes for the plane. I have been lucky to stay in some amazing places in the world but this one is certianly up there with some of the best and definitely most unique. ||Moving on to the food we were full board and I have several random food allergies (not the normal ones). Yet I have never been catered too so well. The amount of food they made for me specifically and ensured at every meal I was informed what I could and couldn't eat and every meal was absolutely amazing. The chef is fantastic. I am defintiely missing the food since being home!! |And to the reason you are visiting Lapland over the festive period with your kids in tow! Make sure you take the kleenex as you will leave with tears!! What an experience!! ||So to round this review off, life is made for experiences and this is one certainly not to be missed. If you are thinking about it, book it, you will not be...
Read moreTo agree with the evaluation of 5 stars you need to understand and appreciate the history and the location as well that not everything has to be brand new and shiny.
The first fjellhotel was built 27.3.1938 approx. 1 km uphill from the location where the "new" hotel stands. The previous was demolished by German troops under WWII. As it was made out of concrete and it located above the treeline, the public opinion was happy when the new was constructed from logs and it was relocated lower area within trees.
This "new" hotel was officially opened exactly 10 years after the first, 27.3.1948, and it's still there.
Some things are obviously been out dated like decades ago, but still when you leave stress and all the ultra modern things behind and look the views and get yourself at right mindset and understand the atmosphere you will just relax and enjoy about everything the hotel has to offer.
Even the 3 times pricier chocolate tastes so much better that you don't mind the price.
There even a small library on the second floor where you can go and read without knowing the time.
And no there is no lift/elevator, so you need to take steps instead. And yes the corridor squeeze's and bends under you foot, but that's just fifth star, since the previous star come from the design of the building and the outstanding and care taking service. The staff is superbly polite and ultra helpful.
If you really want to enjoy your time this is the place where to come, since it's like hidden oasis in fjellwilderness.
Definitely not everyone likes it, but those who can "look" underneath of the surface will understand my evaluation and enjoy their time here in full.
As comparison it would be like, Pallas-Dubai...
