I stayed at Refuge Des Mottets in private room with shared bath after the second stage of my solo self-guided Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) hike. The descent from Col des Fours to the Refugio is long and it looks closer than it is. I arrived just after 7pm right when dinner starts. They assigned me a table likely by nationality. The food was multiple courses passed around the table. The food was decent and they provided entertainment. After dinner, I was able to check into my room. It was nice having a private room, but it was nothing special. I believe the rooms with common bathroom are on the ground floor and ones with private bathroom are upstairs. The bunk rooms did not look as comfortable and I would recommend the private rooms if they are available. Since I arrived later than most I did not observe lines for the showers. I would say the common bathrooms are on par with the other Refugios I stayed in on the TMB. ||||The Refugio offered a good strategic location to combine the next two stages. Many people hiked from Refuge Des Mottets to Courmayeur in one day, including those booking self-guide packages. We stopped at Rifugio Elisabetta for lunch. I did have a reservation at Elisabetta, but decided to go onto Courmayeur with the others given the time and preference for private room. Elisabetta had bunkbeds that were three tall and people slept shoulder to shoulder. I then spent two nights in Courmayeur, since the late arrival would not provide time to explore the town. If you stay in Les Chapieux instead of Refuge Des Mottets and insist on not using transportation hiking to Courmayeur in one day maybe too long. The route over Col des Fours is recommended in good weather. If the weather is inclement it maybe advised to stick to the main route, which will increase the distance to Refuge Des Mottets. Overall, given the setting and location I would recommend staying at Refuge Des Mottets in a...
Read moreArrived here after a long day of hiking on Tour du Mont Blanc from Les Contamines to Les Chapieux. Took a taxi from Les Chapieux to Refuge des Mottets else I would have reached super late.
Firstly, communicating over emails was very efficient and Isabelle was very prompt in answering queries.
The compound of the Refuge is huge. Separate buildings for each of these: dining hall, dorms, toilet, private rooms. So it is a busy place to say the least, and the staff run the place pretty well and were friendly.
Dinner is lively with chatter in the hall. Food was delicious and my 2 year old daughter ate merrily. They had this vegetable soup that was absolutely delicious. Followed by sausages with rice. The sausages were so tender. Dessert was great too. There was some music played by the hosts using some instrument/machine I was unfamiliar with, but it added to the vibe of the place.
One minor point was the walls of the private rooms were thin. Sounds from the corridor were ok, but the room will get quite cold based on my relative experience with other mountain refugees I have stayed. Not a major issue, blankets were provided, just need to have sufficiently warm clothing at night.
Another was that the shower cubicle area was quite dark, and the water pressure was not very strong. But to be practical, simply having an ensuite hot shower facility is a huge luxury for a mountain refuge, so this will not be a...
Read moreMy husband and I hiked the southern half of the TMB for our honeymoon, and stayed at Refuge des Mottets on night three. We decided to pay for a private room with a bathroom included to give ourselves some privacy and also to have a chance for a nice shower after a couple hard days of trekking. The bathroom and shower, it turns out, are literally part of the bedroom - I suppose it's great for honeymooners because you can just jump right into that comfort level of going to the bathroom in front of your spouse ha! Jokes aside, I suppose I'm glad we had a toilet seat, because the other shared toilets did not have seats. The walls and doors are also PAPER thin - just FYI.
Dinner was great - lots of food and good entertainment. The other guests were wonderful to speak with. Breakfast was severely underwhelming. With the amount we paid to stay here, I would have expected more than mediocre bread and jam. In addition, I think the pricing is pretty outrageous for what is offered - we stayed at places where two people got half board for over half the cost that we paid staying here and I would rate those places significantly higher. My recommendation is that it's a great place to stop over for lunch or a hot drink or beer, but I honestly wish we'd have saved the money...
