Disappointing Stay at Chateau Saint Roux - Not Worth the Hype
My partner and I recently stayed at Chateau Saint Roux for two nights, expecting a relaxing getaway, but unfortunately, our experience left much to be desired. Despite the charming appearance of the property, several aspects of our stay were extremely disappointing.
Firstly, we were surprised to be charged for a complimentary wine that we had requested in lieu of a “three nights offer” advertised on their website. Despite booking directly through their site and following the correct process, we were told this offer wasn’t available due to different room categories, which felt like a poor excuse.
To make matters worse, we received an unsolicited restaurant reservation, despite clearly declining it. They went ahead and booked it anyway and sent us a confirmation email, which we found intrusive and unprofessional.
The room itself was uncomfortable in several ways. We had to deal with the smell of cigarette smoke entering our room via the bathroom extraction system, which was incredibly unpleasant. When we called the reception to report this, they didn’t seem to understand or offer a solution. The noise from the neighboring rooms, particularly early in the morning due to footsteps, disturbed our rest, waking us up as early as 7 AM. For a place that markets itself as a tranquil retreat, this was unacceptable.
Adding to the disappointment, breakfast was not included in the stay, which was quite surprising given the price point of the hotel. We were also misled by photos on their website that showed a swimming pool, only to find out there is no pool on the property.
The extra charges were simply ridiculous. We were charged €10 for two coffees in the morning, and the restaurant experience was underwhelming, with desserts that were particularly poor. To top it off, the property charged guests for animal feed to feed their own livestock – something we found both unnecessary and a bit greedy.
The room lacked basic amenities like a fridge or safe, and the overall atmosphere felt unfriendly and unwelcoming. Communication was often a struggle, with the staff seeming either unwilling or unable to effectively address our concerns.
All in all, what was meant to be a peaceful, enjoyable stay turned into a disappointing experience. We certainly won’t be returning, and we would advise others to manage their expectations or seek...
Read moreI came here with high expectations, as I had visited the vineyard in 2019 and stayed for lunch. The lunch the was amazing but, they’ve clearly changed chefs since then. ||I booked a room and made dinner reservations for myself and my husband to celebrate his 50th in a relaxing atmosphere and booked a wine tasting for the next day||||The room was lovely, spacious, clean and with character. ||||I pre ordered a basket, to contain wine, bread, cheese and chips. We were given a choice of cheese ( which was very tasty), bread and a chilled bottle of wine - No chips, no knife, no glasses, bottle opener. This was easily rectified with a visit to the bar. ||||The setting for the bar, sat outside on a couch, over looking the vineyard was lovely. We finished our wine and ordered a G&T - the tonic was there own bio one and was really bitter, there was no alternative tonics. When I ordered a Jack and Diet Coke, I was told no diet and had to have their bio brand, which was incredibly sweet. ||||We’d booked our table for 9pm. The restaurant was fairly busy and the two stuff that were in seemed to be quite flustered and it took sometime until we were served. When we went to order we were told we couldn’t have our choice of mains as they’d sold out and only one of us could have the chosen starter ( sold out!). ||My pasta was thick and it had a stodgy sauce. Husbands chicken over salted. Oh, and husband’s starter, which was mini burrata had turned ( gone off). The waitress didn’t care about our remarks about the over salted food, etc||||Breakfast was not much better. The croissants were delicious, best I’ve had in a while but, they ran out and we’re not replenished. There was a chap ‘around’ but no one on breakfast duty so, no one to ask. Ran out of orange juice and then the coffee machine stopped working- so no coffee. I was lucky I got an OJ in ( missed the working coffee machine) but, many guests had only water to drink. ||||I did mention my points of concern to the receptionist when checking out. She discounted my breakfast...
Read moreWe arrived in the evening and went straight to dinner after checking in, rather than going to the room.
We checked the room for bed bugs and found various shedded skins in the corners of the mattresses and live bugs crawling on the duvet and sofa bed. We went to find someone to report it, but reception was closed and the restaurant staff informed us that there wouldn't be anyone to help until the following morning. We decided to not stay the night with our 15 week old baby and went to find a different hotel to stay in overnight.
We returned the following morning to report this to the staff, expecting an apology and a refund, however, we were told by the manager that they knew there were bugs in the room, but they were not bedbugs and they had been tested by experts. However, when challenged on what kind of bugs they were, they couldn't give an answer. We then got told someone was coming to talk to us, at which point they told us someone had just been up to the room and looked at the bugs and they weren't bed bugs, still no confirmation of what kind of bug though. At which point we had two conflicting stories, however when I checked with the very lovely cleaning staff, they confirmed someone had just been up to check for bed bugs.
They did offer to clean the room, however we felt this was not adequate.
We were told we had to pay the full amount for the two nights, despite having a room with bugs that they may or may not have known about. The only compensation we were offered was a bottle of wine, but ultimately, I was not comfortable staying in a room with my baby with mystery bugs.
Extremely disappointed as we had come here specifically to stay...
