Camping Intercommunal la Prairie — Hotel in Brive-la-Gaillarde

Our family of 4 (kids aged 10 & 12) stayed in a chalet (the 4/6 person 26sqm version) for 11 nights. The campsite is in a lovely, peaceful, elevated location just off the lake with many plots having views over the water. Our chalet was very clean and well maintained. Staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Wilma. The bar was great for enjoying a cold drink and served nice food also with pizzas/burgers to take away. For us, the evening entertainments were not too intrusive or noisy, but that would depend on proximity to the bar. We preferred to sit on our balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy the views over the lake - a hedgehog visited nightly and we saw a deer behind our cabin. Loads of outdoor activities on site - pool, trampoline, boules, a very good mountain bike park (surprisingly good in fact). Loads of activities at the lake including paddle boarding, kayaking, pedalos, and a "Total Wipeout" style inflatable course which the kids loved. Lovely path around the lake (7km) for running & cycling. Big Carrefour a 15min drive away in Brive. In our last 10yrs of summer holidays in France this is one of the best campsites we've visited and we would definitely look at the Flower Camping...

Perfectly located only 10 minutes drive from Brive.||Great quiet campsite with large pitches for the caravan. Great view overlooking the lake from our pitch. Only negative on the pitch was it was quite shaded (I like a lot of sun!) and the ground is very hard..yiu will need a steel hammer to get your pegs in, a rubber mallet is not up to the job.|The showers were very modern, clean and lovely and hot. Only negative on the showers were that there were only 2 in each block (3 blocks on the site) and so invariably there would be a wait for a shower. ||The pool is a good size, although it was really cold!||The lake is only a short 5 minute walk from the campsite. The facilities are very good, paddle boards, canoes and water skiing. The brochure stated that there were 100km of cycle tracks, but apart from the obvious track around the lake, they were not obvious.||You could order bread and croissants from the bar, but there was no on site shop. “Camping met Uitzicht (en Inzicht)”

We hadden het weer voor elkaar hoor: met de hele club een topstek uitgezocht, pal aan het schitterende meer van Lissac du Causse. Een uitzicht om in te lijsten, zó mooi dat je vergat dat het toiletgebouw meer deed denken aan een minimalistische kunstinstallatie dan aan een sanitaire voorziening. Warm water? Ja hoor, als je snel genoeg afwast voordat het koude water arriveert. Een ware race tegen de kou.

En dan het brood. Och, het brood. Niks geen ‘bonjour, pain frais?’ bij de receptie. Nee, de ochtend begon met een queeste: op pad naar de broodautomaat in het pittoreske (lees: steil omhoog gelegen) dorpje. Een klim waar zelfs professionele wielrenners een beetje buikpijn van zouden krijgen. Voor onze ouderen? Die stonden beneden met verrekijkers te kijken of iemand het nog levend haalde. “Daar gaat Jan, hij is over de helft!” En dan maar hopen dat het stokbrood de afdaling overleeft.

We stelden voor om gewoon via de receptie te bestellen. “Misschien kan de bakker het dan brengen?” opperde iemand. “Brengen?” vroeg de campingbeheerder, “Wat denkt u, dat dit Parijs is?” Nou nee, maar een traplift voor het brood zou al helpen.

Overigens, het rondje om het meer (7 km) is een absolute aanrader. Behalve als je denkt dat het een ‘rustig ommetje’ is. Halverwege begon ik spontaan m’n testament op te stellen. “Mocht ik het niet halen, geef mijn croissants aan Marietje.”

Fietsen? Prachtig. Maar alleen voor wie z’n bovenbenen als hobby heeft. Je moet niet bang zijn voor een helling waar zelfs de fiets besluit terug te rollen. “M’n ketting ligt eraf!” – “Nee hoor, je moed is er gewoon uit.”

En toen gebeurde het: iemand uit onze groep moest naar het ziekenhuis. Geen probleem, dachten we, we bellen een taxi. Maar blijkbaar is een taxi in Lissac du Causse net zo zeldzaam als een warme douche op de camping. “Nee, dat kan niet,” zei de beheerder, “We hebben geen afspraken met taxibedrijven.” Alsof je vroeg of de Eiffeltoren even verplaatst kon worden.

“Misschien kunnen we een geit regelen met een karretje?” stelde iemand voor. “Of anders een tandem met sirene.”

Al met al: een camping vol natuur, avontuur en verrassingen. En laten we eerlijk zijn – zo’n vakantie vergeet je nooit meer. Al is het alleen maar omdat je na het afwassen nooit meer gevoel in je...
