We are currently at the end of our stay at Le Maison de Julie, and we could not have asked for a better time here. Our hosts, Carole and Christian, are incredibly friendly, hospitable and helpful, picking us up in town when we arrived, giving us lots of local information, and treating us like friends. Le Maison de Julie is a few kilometres out of town (we loved this about it), but Christian has been very willing and accommodating in driving us into town and bringing us home after dinner. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. Breakfasts have been much more substantial than any other breakfast I've had in France, either in hotels and private homes. This morning there's fruit, yoghurt, juice, brioche, cake, butter, honey and jams,as well as tea and coffee. Our room is very spacious, with a sun room overlooking the valley as well as the bedroom and bathroom. After telling them we'd like to walk in the mountains, Carole showed us to the start of a great hike, and Christian researched other hikes that we can fit into the few hours we have left today. Oh, and Entrevaux itself has a charming old medieval village to stroll around, the citadel at the top of the hill, a friendly barman who makes great espresso, cappuccino and hot chocolate (behind the main hotel), as well as spectacular scenery and some fantastic walks. In all, Entrevaux was a really interesting place for us to visit, and La Maison de Julie has been a warm, delightful place to stay....
Read moreChristian and Carole, the hosts of this beautiful B&B just outside of Entrevaux, have been just astounding in their level of care. Not only have they ferried us around from place to place as we have needed, they have guided us to find wonderful walks that we would never have stumbled on, great restaurants, a local concert ( great local flavour) and on our first night here rescued us when we got lost walking home from town in the dark ( we got a gentle lecture about the wild boars that roamed the fields at night). Our stay was worth it for the care of this charming couple, not to mention our exquisite little apartment with a sunny breakfast room and magnificent views of Entrevaux's citadel. I loved the attention to detail of the patchwork quilts, old French furniture, whitewashed walls and old beams, but a modern bathroom. If you are a walker, this is walkers heaven, with exquisite walks through the hills and forests, not to mention the old town of Entrevaux and the citadel. We did a wonderful, though quite challenging walk of 9.5 km to the Chapel of St Jeannot du Desert, perched up on a mountain in the middle of pine forests, miles from anywhere. You follow a pilgrim's trail with a series of small shrines through countryside reminiscent of "Heidi". Overall a perfect stay in paradise - great hosts, accommodation, food and...
Read moreForgot to take the location map, and had to ring to find the place, which is not in Entrevaux but in the nearby hamlet of Le Plan. But when you get there, the welcome is good, the surrounding views are lovely, the building is genuinely ancient and the facilities are excellent - we had a large bedroom, with well set up shower room (hairdryer, tissues, shower gel provided) and access to our own private breakfast area, with kettle and teas. On the lower ground floor is a fully functional kitchen (hob, oven, microwave, fridge with freezer section) with table and four chairs, so you can make meals easily, as we did on two of our three nights. Free wifi access - just get the code and ask Carole to validate it. Breakfast slightly different each day, including some home made jams, lovely breads etc. Off season price (from 1 September) very reasonable. Pay the deposit by PayPal using a credit card that does not charge and you are...
