Château du Landel — Hotel in Dieppe

This was our first visit to the château and it delivered all it promised - great location, impressive building, fine food and a warm, friendly welcome.||First impressions are of an imposing Normandy château approached along a tree-lined avenue set in extensive grounds. Inside the rooms are individual and full of character but the real treat comes at meal times. The food is sublime and the service very good. Apparently the owner’s dream was to become a chef in a top starred restaurant and when the opportunity arose to take over the Château du Landel he seized the it with both of his skilled chef’s hands. His signature dish, a meringue, cream, fruit and sorbet ‘cake’, is a triumph of culinary skill and imagination. We thought it was simply fabulous.||But the icing on the cake is that rooms at the chateau are reasonably priced but with limited space we are told they tend to go quickly. Within easy reach of channel ports it’s an obvious stop for people going through the channel ports.||Niggles? The rooms on the second floor require a climb and there’s no lift. Für Ausflüge nach Les Andelys (15km), Lyons de la Foret (12km) und Giverny (50km) sowie Rouen (45km) oder sogar nach Paris (100km) sehr gut geeignet. Die Gastgeber sind sehr freundlich. Auf Sonderwünsche und Extras wurde ohne großes Aufhebens eingegangen. Das Anwesen liegt leider im Niemandsland zwischen Feldern und Wald, ist aber für Ruhesuchende genau das Richtige. Direkt zum Anwesen gehören noch weitere landwirtschaftliche Gebäude, gegenüber stehen Esel und es wird eigener Honig produziert. Den Outdoorpool (war noch geschlossen) und den Wellnessbereich (im Gebäude am Pool) hatten wir nicht genutzt, wir waren aber abends und mittags im kleinen Restaurant mit dem schönen großen Kamin essen und sehr überrascht von der guten Qualität der Speisen. Leider gab es mittags die gleiche Karte, aber diese hatte genügend Auswahl. Auch gibt es leider keine Außenterrasse für das Restaurant oder Frühstück, was aber bei unserem Aufenthalt mit eher regnerischem Wetter unwichtig war. Das an den Platz gebrachte kontinentale Frühstück (13Euro) war üppig für französische Verhältnisse und von sehr guter Qualität. Frisch gepresster Orangensaft und Eierspeisen werden als Extras berechnet. Unser Zimmer war das Familienappartment und bestand aus einem großen Zimmer mit Doppelbett und einem kleinen mit 2 Einzelbetten als Durchgangszimmer mit Badezimmer ensuite mit Wanne und Doppelwaschbecken und gefiel uns von den antiken französischen Möbeln über die Wandbespannung und den Dekoren und der Qualität der Betten sehr gut. Alles authentisch und nichts aufgesetzt und mit viel Geschmack und Sinn für Farben eingerichtet. Das "Appartment" hätte sogar noch einmal um ein großes Doppelzimmer per Verbindungstür erweitert werden können. Stauraum/Schrankraum war allerdings sehr knapp. WLAN war kostenlos, aber leider langsam. Moderne Schließanlage mit Kartenschloß. Die Gastgeberin, welche sowohl beim Frühstück als auch Abendessen Bestellungen aufnimmt spricht auch Englisch, ihr Ehemann, der auch maitre de cuisine ist und teils die Rezeption übernimmt, nur Französisch. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und würden auf jeden Fall...

This is a classic “fur coat and no knickers” chateau – hugely imposing frontage, but one room and a corridor thick. Carefully maintained by the resent owner – who seems to have been there fiorever. Came back here in September at short notice for the first time in a while (because of Covid, of course). Forgot to ask specifically for one of the first floor rooms (the Rose Room is our favourite) and so ended up in what used to be the servants’ quarters up two flights of stairs.
