We spend 4 wonderful days and 3 cozy nights at Meg & Jean's place. We felt a bit like at home.
Days start with a wonderful breakfast and end with a really excellent dinner in the evening - if you like, extended with a couple of glases of red wine or locally brewed beer in the salon besides the chimney (we stayed here in April when the nights can still be very cool) together with other guests or with Jean.
Cuisine deserves an own section, but you can find much more in the web about La grange des Ecrin, so I just say here: Expect great food - ranging from local meats prepared with an Asian touch by Meg to French Cuisine or Raclette with cheese from the neigbour farm and a glass of Génépi liqueur to digest...
Rooms are really extraordinaire! Unique and designed with taste and a sense for cozyness and fengshui at the same time. Really worth a stay just for that.
Languages spoken naturally here by the full family are French, Chinese, English plus a very good German by Jean.
Jean also has very good tips for local tours in the area, customized to your needs and interests.
And if you have kids, there is plenty they can do with house-cat Damien and two horses next door and a stable full of cows in walking distance which are milked every evening. But there are many more options around if you have a drive - or simply a huge garden with swimming pool in summer.
The two hosts as well as 6 years old daughter Gabrielle are lovely and made our stay...
Read moreLa Grange des Ecrins deserves all the 5 stars it receives. Our family felt this was a home away from home with all the comforts, but none of the work! Our kids/teens could explore the gardens with the background of the mountains. This left the adults time to enjoy the reading room, play the piano, badminton or take a drink at the bar. We had one bedroom for adults with ensuite and the teen room, which was adjacent, was also ample sized with its own bathroom. Charbottes is a tiny village which is lovely for a stroll. And the silence at night with a window above the bed to watch the stars... Serenity!||Jean’s family has lived in these mountains for generations and his kindness, advice and guidance was appreciated and invaluable. Meg is a chef extraordinaire who surprised us every night with delicious cuisine with vegetarian options to boot. Our family was able to enjoy, for one week, the best of French food, conversation and conviviality. The kids and I even managed to practice speaking French with the other guests, although this wasn’t needed as Jean speaks excellent English and 'Australian'. We return to Australia much richer for this experience. Many thanks especially to the ‘guest services manager’ who allowed my daughter to carry him around and moved off the couch occasionally. ||Our holiday was arranged through...
Read moreWe had an amazing time in La Grange des Ecrins with our family in July this year! This is a veritable hidden gem, located in a charming and quiet National Park full of stunning nature and with plenty of outdoors activities (paragliding, zipline across the plains, lake swimming or just trekking). The owner Jean was an invaluable source of advice and information and provided detailed guidance so we could enjoy some of the most spectacular walks in nature during our week there. La Grange is a sprawling estate with only a handful of eclectically and lovingly decorated rooms, comprising a forest zipline (!), trampoline, forest meditation corner and a brand-new yoga platform overlooking the valley (unforgettable!). Not to forget the swimming pool and sunset bar where Jean-Bernard aka JB whips up amazing cocktails for the guests to enjoy before dinner. And dinner is a real big deal – fantastic chef Meg (who truly is deserving of a Michelin star!) produces amazing three course meals every night, with a menu that changes daily to incorporate as much as possible seasonal produce of the surrounding areas. A wonderful place where we felt at home after only a few days and were sad to leave. We...
