Terragora Lodges — Hotel in La Roche-sur-Yon

I am extremely torn as to how to adequately review this "hotel." I stayed here in one of the chrysalisses for 4 nights while visiting Puy du Fou. I chose it because every other nearby hotel (up to 20 miles away) was completely full. The price of $200+ per night was high, but I bit the bullet and booked, thinking that the experience of staying in this unique place would outweigh the monetary outlay. ||First, finding the place is tricky. It's located way off the beaten track, and its signage can be easily missed. The road into it (as well as the parking lot) is dirt and gravel, and quite full of ruts -- pretty hard on a rental car. ||The chrysalis is bizarre and more than a bit dangerous. The trail down to it was totally unlit except for a cheap solar light stuck in the ground to mark the entryway. There were "steps" carved into the ground, but they were covered with straw an slippery. Use of a very bright flashlight was absolutely required for safety. The accommodations comprised 2 floors, each reached via a narrow iron spiral staircase. The sleeping area is upstairs, the toilet and shower down. Everything is an open floorplan -- no doors, thus, no privacy. The toilet is positioned practically inside the shower, so unless you are very careful, everthing in the area is soaked after a shower. One good thing was that the plumbing was superb -- ample hot water and no problems with the toilet. The spiral staircase is problematic, though: it's impossible to move a suitcase between floors via it; it poses an impediment for midnight bathroom runs; and is positioned such that toes and heads can easily bump into it. ||The staff was the BEST thing about my stay -- they were extremely accommodating and kind. ||I ate breakfast there every morning and ate only one dinner. I found the food very mediocre, especially for France. The choice of local wines was very good, though.||I cannot say that this was the best place I've stayed at. It may be okay for young backpackers -- with money -- looking for a cool-looking place to get out of the rain for a night. For an adult, however, who is used to getting some at lesst modicum of value for the price of a hotel room, this place is extremely disappointing. For anyone with even the slightest physical disability, it is totally impractical and could be dangerous.||Oh, and one more thing... if you are staying over a Friday or Saturday night while Puy du Fou's Scenéciné is operating, you will think you are in the midst of a war zone with all the noise between 10:00 pm - midnight. No sleeping...

We stayed for two nights in the Terrrier accommodation in August, being a party of 7 we rented the two mud huts near the bar and reception. Easy to find and a warm welcome on arrival. Our hut was a great fun design with a little terrace at rear to catch the evening sun and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. The bathroom and toilet is straight off the bedroom with a only saloon type swing door - so not a lot of privacy! Everything was however clean. For our first night we ate in the bar/restaurant which was welcome after a long drive from the UK. We enjoyed the tasty cheese and meat platters with lovely bread and good selection of wines. It was quite hot at night and we did share our bathroom with a friendly lizard and quite a few spiders but we had been warned about the wildlife! This all added to the experience and uniqueness of the stay! Breakfast was crusty bread, jam and cereal etc watch out for the very interesting egg boiling contraption! All the staff were friendly and welcoming creating a laid back relaxed atmosphere.||We visited Puy Du Fou which was a fantastic “not to be missed” experience and so close to the lodges. (Tickets booked on line) We were very wary before our stay, having chosen this accommodation mainly due to the proximity to Puy Du Fou.
