Château de La Combe — Hotel in Nontron

My family stayed at Chateau de la Combe for an overnight celebration of a major family event and the experience was magical. From our arrival onwards the atmosphere was relaxing and tranquil and the Chateau itself was just exquisite. I personal really liked the combination of historical fixtures combined with comfortable modern amenities like clean and well decorated bathrooms and quality beds and decor. The family who runs this beautiful French dwelling took care to be welcoming and their attention to detail was apparent through the absolutely outstanding meal that they provided. The evening began with a champagne aperitif/toast with fresh home made bread and the best sun dried tomato spread I have ever experienced! Many of the guests commented on the fresh and delicious food! This was followed by a wonderful meal on the terrace overlooking a valley. The foie gras plate was coupled with local rose jelly and the perfect pairing of wine. The duck with apple was prepared with such attention that each bite was mouth watering. The meal concluded with a homemade and delectable strawberry cake dessert. Every guest who attended was raving about the fresh ingredients and the use of local wines and seasonal ingredients. The portions provided ensured that there was absolutely no possibility for any guest to be left hungry. The hosts attention to detail, their warm personalities, professional and attentive demeanour and understanding of the needs of a group with people aged approximately 7-80 years made this event one that our family will remember through our lifetime. Their wonderful children were also part of the welcoming team and were a delight -they helped us set up the decor for the celebration and also played with our children which ensured everyone had an enjoyable evening and overnight stay. We had a lovely one-night stay at the charming Chateau de la Combe last week. It was the last night of our 2-week trip, and it was one of the most memorable, thanks to the tranquil atmosphere and warm, inviting hosts. We chose the Chateau because of its proximity to the Angouleme train station, from which we took the TGV directly to CDG Airport for our flight home. It was a short, painless 25-minute drive to the Angouleme train station. Upon arriving at the Chateau, we were greeted by proprietress Thyra and her sweet Golden Lab. She showed us to our room, the Lewis Room (named after C.S. Lewis), which featured a super comfortable bed, original wood floors and an enormous window that opened out to the woods and fields outside. The attached bathroom was small, but not tiny by French standards, and well-appointed, with a bath/shower. We took a long stroll around the property at dusk, enjoying the birds chirping and dipping our feet in the pool. At dinnertime, Thyra & Vincent served us and the other guests aperitifs and hors d'oeuvres in the garden, and then a delicious, well-prepared meal of Pear Avocado Salad, Homemade Bread, Sabre with Mango, Local Cheeses and Chocolate Mousse. It was superb. Also, they were accommodating of my pescatarian diet, which is no small consideration in France. Thyra & Vincent speak excellent English, but were patient with us practicing our French. We enjoyed lovely dinner conversation. The meal (food & company) was certainly a highlight of our trip. We slept well in the peace and quiet. (The enormous window has blackout shutters outside, which allowed us to sleep in a bit.) Malheureusement, j'aurais souhaité mettre un bon commentaire étant donné la qualité du lieu, mais plusieurs points nous ont déçu. Tout d'abord, l'accueil est assez léger mais cela peut passer. Là où la déception voir même l'étonnement s'est fait ressentir c'est lorsque vous décidez d'aller vous reposer dans une chaise longue au bord de la piscine et que le propriétaire ne trouve rien de mieux que de sortir son gros tracteur tondeuse très très bruyant pour tondre sa propriété y compris en passant derrière vous alors que vous êtes en maillot de bain allongé sur la chaise en question à profiter du premier rayon de soleil de la saison et vous reposer de quelques jours exténuant. Après de longues minutes de patience, nous avons décidés, contraints, de rentrer malgré ce beau temps pour nous reposer et essayer de nous assoupir dans la chambre. C'était sans compter leur 4 enfants qui avaient décidé de jouer dans la demeure au rez de chaussée, à courrir et crier dans un lieu vraiment non insonorisé !!! J'aime les enfants, mais dans un tel lieu on aspire au calme. Autre point, pas de chance pour nous, ce soir là pas de dîner possible ce qui avait été annoncé, et ce que nous regrettons beaucoup étant donné la conjoncture du moment. Nous avons appelé quelques restaurants au alentours mais ils n'étaient pas encore ouvert malgré l'allègement gouvernementale leur permettant d'ouvrir. Bref, nous avons dû nous rabattre dépités, sur quelques gâteaux que nous avions dans nos valises. Le petit déjeuner était quant à lui correct même si pour moi qui ne mange pas de gluten à cause d'une intolérance importante c'était compliqué. Cela dit ce qui nous a un peu étonné c'est la distance avec laquelle se conduisent les hôtes de ce lieu. Nous les avons très peu vus et le peu d'informations que nous avons eu, il a fallu les solliciter. Donc pas de présentation des aliments composant le petit déjeuner notamment, ce qui se fait généralement avec un peu de convivialité. Nous nous sommes sentis, réellement de passage, sans marque d'attentions particulières malgré un cadre charmant et avec beaucoup de potentiel. Tant mieux pour les propriétaires si notre présence leur a permis de remplir leurs réservations mais je m'attendais à plus de convivialité et un service plus qualitatif. Je précise que la chambre Lewis ne ferme pas de l'extérieur, ce qui est un problème pour la protection de vos biens. Au vue des précédents commentaires je suppose que le propriétaire essayera de discréditer mes dires ou de trouver de bonnes excuses. A vous de vous faire votre propre avis. Le mien est sincère. Etant donné notre expérience dans ce type de gîte, nous n'y retournerons pas, ne le conseillerons pas et ne vous le conseillons pas non plus....
