Château de Druon — Hotel in Oloron-Sainte-Marie

I very much wanted to like Chateau Druon. It has so much potential as a boutique, upscale hotel experience in the French Pyrenees. And if you don’t mind bugs (spiders, flies, ants, cobwebs), musty old towels, and other minor inconveniences such as a shower where you can’t fully stand up, then it may be the place for you. Perhaps you find the overgrown garden and brackish fountain charming, or the peeling paint on the chateau facade and whiff of cigarette smoke on the ornate marble staircase brings to life the decaying French grandeur you were seeking in your authentic Pyrénées vacation stay. By all means, this hotel was beautiful, unique, and charming in its own way. But for me, if the same attention to detail on the art and decor was applied to the minor and easily solvable issues like an exterior power wash, a room dusting/vacuuming, some new sheets and towels, a filter replacement in the bathroom vent, a landscaper, etc. then it would have been a more comfortable hotel stay instead of what felt like an unkempt rural...

We could have stayed forever in this magnificent Chateau. We arrived tired after a long drive through some spectacular scenery. Elizabeth gave us the warmest of welcomes and offered to cook us dinner. The room was large and tastefully decorated with the most amazing mountain view. The bed was probably the most comfortable that we have ever slept in. Elizabeth cooked us a simply delicious dinner from locally sourced produce including several wines. Breakfast was equally as good. |There were two French couples staying who spoke little English. Elizabeth translated for us and made sure that we all enjoyed each others company. We just loved this place...

This place is amazing! A beautiful château with interesting artworks everywhere. Our room was the 20eme room and the decor is inspired by 20th century inventions - think galactic meets industrial look, very cool! Every detail in the room has really been thought through - even down to the funky radiator! Also everything is so clean, the place was completely spotless. The owners are lovely fun people and invited us to the lounge for a couple of drinks with them in the evening. Also the breakfast is delicious...
