We selected this accommodation from the Sawdays website and this was backed up by Trip Advisor reviews. It did not disappoint. Tucked away down a long lane, this large country house sits at the top of a slope with views down to the river estuary. The weather during our stay was hot and sunny; windows and doors were all open and a welcome breeze circulated. Patrick (who speaks French, English and German) and Virginie encourage guests to share both house and garden with them, with a choice of areas in which to relax. Photography, books, magazines, artwork and furniture that fill the house reflect Patrick's cultural interests and the strains of classical music often filled the air. Eating breakfast with Mozart's horn concerto in the background was one such pleasure. Patrick was both informative and accommodating.|Our room was large with a generous bathroom. Ceilings are high and floors are polished wooden floorboards, which on a couple of occasions proved a little noisy when close neighbours were walking around. Tall shuttered windows with original ironwork guards provided a view across the garden to the estuary beyond. Despite the rural setting we were surprised to be aware of light traffic noise at certain times of the day but this did not mar our overall enjoyment of the setting. We arrived early evening at a weekend and Patrick was able to recommend and book a table for us in a restaurant at the nearby Café Port. The food was excellent, although the service a little erratic! On our second night we purchased provisions from the nearby delicatessen and enjoyed a picnic in the garden. Barbora, who helps run the b and b with Patrick, appeared at breakfast each morning, spoke excellent English and was also helpful with recommendations. Breakfasts were beautifully presented and fresh, including products from the local bakery and homemade jams.|We were sorry to miss Patrick when we left but would like to thank him for letting us enjoy his...
Read moreI selected Chateau Penfrat based on Trip Advisor reviews and everyone was spot on. We arrived down a long winding road and was met by the owner's dog. The owner was upstairs and hadn't heard us come in, the the dog happily went up and got him for us! We were warmly greeted by Patrick who was running the chateau on his own this weekend. He gave us a tour of the rooms and gave us some history of the home. We were awed by our guest suite! When we entered the room, I wondered if we were going to have to sleep on a small day bed, but that was just the living area! This enormous room had high ceilings and large windows with a fireplace, couch and amply reading spots. Off the living area was a super large bathroom with his and hers bathtubs, a fireplace, dual sinks and vanity area. The water closet was separate off of this room. On to the bedroom. SOOO relaxing. A large king sized bed faced out to the sprawling yard which sloped down to the river. After a long drive, my husband opted for a short nap, while I went downstairs to the reading room where I could relax and take in the exceptionally beautiful weather and views. ||||Wifi worked great in all areas of the house. I was replying to emails when Patrick offered a glass of wine. We chatted about the house, how long he's owned it and all the improvements he's made. Really fascinating. I also asked for a recommendation for dinner, and he happily made us a reservation at Cafe du Port, which we thoroughly enjoyed! ||||We found our stay here so relaxing, the bed was so comfortable, we had the windows open (in October!) and slept really well!! The following morning, we discovered there was another couple whom we met over breakfast. We lingered over coffee with talks of the upcoming election with other Americans. A rare treat! The chateau is decorated with lots of art and books. Patrick was a gracious and interesting host, and the home was warm and welcoming. Highly...
Read moreChateau de Penfrat surrounded by its own woodland and overlooking the river has a calming effect as soon as you arrive. Patrick and Barbora, and the dogs, gave us a warm welcome and made us feel at home straight away. Patrick settled us into our rooms in his elegant house with wonderful views of the river. We occupied the Riverside Apartment with two rooms and a bathroom and our friends were in the South Suite. All the rooms were well appointed and the high ceilings and tall windows gave good views of the grounds and river. It was quite magical to walk through the woods down by the river in the company of the two dogs. Patrick and Barbora served the a really special breakfast in the fine dining room overlooking the garden. They were always on hand to look after our needs and share their local knowledge and recommend places to eat. Patrick was keen to explain the estate, the woods and his machinery for the woodchip that heats the Chateau and his other houses.||Chateau de Penfrat and the warm welcome we received will stay with us for a long time. We thoroughly...
