We had a wonderful few days at Chateau du Val in early January 2019 – our party was made up of 5 shooters and 5 non-shooters, and we all came from the UK.
• The shooting was textbook French hunting style, working with energetic and well controlled dogs ensured a healthy number of both Reeves Pheasant and wild Partridge were in the bag, but on this occasion we didn't see any Woodcock. The comprehensive pre-shoot briefing made-sure we all understood the local regulations. • The non-shooting activities were of an equally excellent standard with cooking school, wine tasting, and a visit to the local spa and medieval village. • The accommodation was simple, warm and with an abundance of space it was easy relax and remind yourself you are on holiday • The food was very tasty and plentiful – ranging from a simple French breakfast to a delicious dinner in the chateau
However, what made it extra-special was the truly warm welcome extended by Jas, Joss and the entire team at Chateau du Val. They are kind, calm and caring – and really made us feel part of the family
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will definitely...
Read moreThird but not hopefully not the last time I have been to Chateau du Val. It was five years since my last visit and I brought a new group to shoot, eat, drink and enjoy the eccentric experience that is Chateau du Val. Our hosts Jas and Joss were as welcoming and generous as ever. The weekend is best seen as a congenial stay with some French walked up shooting rather than a shooting weekend. A slightly different mindset is required. It is not like English driven shooting at all. The hospitality is excellent. We enjoyed wine tasting, dinner in the chateau, cookery courses and the Christmas market. There are pretty towns and a motor museum nearby. This time we came with wives and it was a great success. Some of the beds and plumbing were a bit worn but the lodge was warm and well provided. Dinner in the Chateau is a treat and Jas obviously enjoys hosting the weekends. I enjoyed talking to the local staff who are clearly grateful that the chateau is being looked after and that local people are being included. A weekend here is great fun and good value. Think house...
Read more2018 is a special year for Chateau du Val, and the Jersey contingent. We have been coming to this delightful shoot for ten years ! (except for two thanks to the weather and the French dockers) and the first weekend around the 1st December 2019 is already booked. From the moment one arrives at the Lodge you are instantly aware that this is special. The fire is lit, the heating is on in every room, the evening meal is ready, wine in the fridge, it goes on and on, and no one else except your party. Each day fantastic breakfast, lunch and dinner; its quite easy to forget why you are actually here. I have shot at some exceedingly good estates in the UK, but Chateau Val is about hunting over dogs, and this year we were treated to the finest that I've ever seen in the field. I was even prepared to leave the gun at the lodge just to watch the dogs working. All too soon its over and again at the mercy of the weather for the return home. Give Chateau Val a try next season. You will not be...
