We have visited the island of Oleron for 17 years now and camped at Le Sous Bois for 4 years on seven different occasions.||Camping Le Sous Bois is a very unspoilt French site the size of which enables you to experience the French ambiance and natural environment. It is situated with the beach, bakery, restaurant and bar across the road and a gentle 15 minute stroll to many other restaurants around the picturesque port of La Cotiniere. You can also get on your bikes and cycle on the many cycle routes.||The owners of the site Sylvie (her dog Atois) and Jean Francois always take time out to make sure your stay is both enjoyable and relaxing.||It is so lovely to walk around a camp site where everyone is so friendly and say bonjour.||The facilities whilst not being new are well maintained and clean. The pitches are of a good size for both touring caravans and tents with modern 10amp electricity. There is a new multi-sport court, petangue and play area at the rear of the site for the active and young to enjoy. ||There is entertainment during the main season in a Marquis which is very French (I love it) but teen ages may not agree. However there is a free bus that will take them to the disco in the nearby towns and returning them in the early hours of the morning.||A free bus that passes the site will take you to the many beautiful beaches and towns on the...
Read moreVisited here for our main hols this year. Bit of an undiscovered haven is this ile, and maybe for good reason...|The island has so much to see and discover.|This camp site is very French, very friendly, very quiet, great location, bread shop over the road and pizzeria and bar, walking distance to the beach and nearby port town.|Sandy beaches are 1.5 km near the port and 4 km north, most of the west coast is rocky.|Cycling is a must in this area and very easy, hire bikes within 1 km.|Clean amenities being updated and in various state of age, but clean, don't expect usual English water and waste areas, it's a bot of improvisation but good water pressure for corner taps at the toilet block, still not sure where grey water goes?|Toilet emptying ok.|Recycling active.|Gates locked at 10pm, parking outside.|ACSI accepted out of July and august.|Be aware only eclectic BBQ's are allowed. I guess the place gets a bit tinder dry sometimes.|There are public BBQ's at the toilet block, have to say I wouldn't really use them, they are ok, but BBQing is a social thing to me, not wander off and cook. But they are supplied, I guess in the past there have been a fire incident.||I is a lovely site with some privacy between some pitches, but mainly surrounded by average height trees, well...
Read moreOur first trip to the island and what a gem of a place to find. I dont want to sing its praises too much though and spoil the ambience . This site's name means, under the wood. It has lots of trees although there is no lack of sunshine, there are some mature trees but the trees in general around the pitches are just right. We were there in June so relatively low season, it was fairly quiet the staff are lovely and we did have some jokes with the girls. They are upgrading the toilet/shower blocks at the time so a bit of moving around required for the workmen, some days one half was closed etc, but no issues, it has to be done. Across the road is a lovely bakery and a pizza/bar. If you walk to the left you can access the beach by an old german fortification, some great sunsets. The beaches are not fantastic on this side of the island, whilst there is some sand at the top of the beach in the main its all rock plateaus. The port is great with some great places to eat. Hoping to...
