We were heading from Berlin down to southern Germany and by 1700 decided we needed a bed for the night. We stopped at a motorway stop, used their free Wi-fi and looked at the first hotel we were offered in Heidelberg, the ISG Hotel. The price was good and although the hotel didn’t have any reviews, it had everything we needed.||Following the sat nav, we easily found the hotel perched up on Boxberg a few kilometres from the city centre. There was parking at the hotel and once inside we were greeted by a very cheerful and friendly receptionist who spoke German and English. We were quickly assigned a room on the first floor and headed up in the elevator to find a large, well equipped and spacious room. In addition to the usual fittings, there was tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, and free bottled water. The bathroom was clean, well appointed and fairly large.||Downstairs, we went to the restaurant which had a good menu and was reasonably priced, draft beer was available too. We subsequently discovered the restaurant had only been opened two days before. We also ate breakfast here in the morning which cost €9 each. Food on both occasion was excellent.||We did have a minor issue with a blocked sink, but once reported, it was fixed within 10 minutes.||Our stay was short, but it was very comfortable and quiet. For those wishing to explore Heidelberg itself, the bus stops right outside the hotel. For those into the Bauhaus movement, the hotel has recently been renovation in Bauhaus style.||Overall, an excellent hotel just a little way off the beaten track. I would...
Read moreExcellent value if you are staying in the Heidelberg area or a guest at EMBL. 3 bus stops within 1 minute of walking from the hotel, making it easy to get downtown, to the laboratory, or HBF. Best breakfast of any hotel I stayed in Germany. 24 hour check-in is very helpful when your train or plane arrives late. My room had a balcony and it was very nice in the mornings or evenings. I couldn't find a speck of dirt anywhere in the bathroom, and they provided nice seltzer water upon check-in. The room also had an electric kettle for tea. Bed was comfortable. The whole hotel has a retro vibe. Compliments to Nathalie at reception.
If you are American, some things you might want to know are that there are plenty of outlets (bring a type E/F, I bought mine off Amazon), bring your own toiletries (there's nice 3-in-1 provided in the shower, but you'll want your own), the shower is one of the largest I've had in German hotels, there's a towel-heater in the bathroom, and the tap water is fine to drink. The reception staff are helpful, don't be afraid to ask questions if you need anything at all. You can also order delivery to the hotel if you're hungry, jetlagged, and the hotel restaurant is closed (aka past 11 pm, and most everything in Germany...
