MDG Hotel — Hotel in Magdeburg

I stayed for one night to rest and get proper sleep before continuing my journey - at least, that was my plan.

The location was convenient, near the motorway, though a bit in the middle of nowhere, with not many food options nearby. The view around the hotel was of some kind of factory and timber storage. I booked this stay with my profile language set to English. While I understand that the hotel is located in Germany, I expected that any necessary instructions would be provided in both German and English, but that didn't happen. All instructions on how to access the room (how to get the PIN for the door) and the check-in process were provided in German - I almost missed the check-in. Unfortunately, telephone support is only available until a certain time. I have to say, having a PIN was convenient, giving you a little flexibility, but if there are any problems with the PIN and a very late arrival, this can be a big problem. The room cost wasn't bad.

At first glance, the room looked fine. There was a kettle and fridge. A good-sized bathroom with a walk-in shower. But when I looked around, I noticed a few things that raised my concerns about the cleanliness. While the bedsheets seemed freshly changed, in the cabinet, I found some empty bottles of Coca-Cola and mineral water and an open packet of condoms. In the fridge, some old butter was also left (at least I assumed it was butter - I didn't touch it and left it as I found it).

Late in the evening, and after almost 10 hours of driving, I didn't have much choice: sleep in the car or in the room that I paid for? No hotel support is available after a certain time. I managed to close my eyes for a few hours, but I couldn't say it was a very pleasant stay.

We were travelling from Poland to United Kingdom and needed a sleep stop to rest. Location is great, right next to the motorway, McDonalds and Bakery on site. The car park is unclear is confusing, everyone parks by the fence, no bay markings. I feel a bit uneasy leaving my car overnight by a dark gate that's open of a equipment hire company next door. The PIN retrieval process through the website is written in German, if not for Google translate - we wouldn't be able to fill it out. It requires personal details. Access is easy, rooms are moder and clean, no complaints there. TV has only German channels, since we don't speak the language, it's a as if the TV is not there... My biggest complaint is the WiFi. It's simply pitiful, disgrace for 21st century. After not having access to internet, I need the WiFi to catch up on work. WiFi in this hotel is not fit for purpose, you couldn't even browse web, it's too slow. SpeedTest...

Unfortunately the room I booked and payed for was occupied. Since the host did not answer the phone, I had to find an alternative to spend the night. The biggest surprise came when a request for refund was denied. The host argued that I should have called an “emergency number” to solve this problem. This number was indeed provided in small grey letters on a black background in the confirmation email. This was very difficult to find on a mobile phone screen at night. In case you decide to book a room at this place, make sure you have registered the right telephone number as a regular booking may become an emergency issue...
