Residenz Royal — Hotel in Sandhausen

My husband and I have lived in Germany for over 30 years, so we are not "tourists". We live about 4 hours north of Heidelberg and spent the weekend visiting our daughter who is doing an internship there. I say this to preface my comments, because we have stayed a many German hotels over the years.||||I'll start with the downside, so I can end on a positive note.||||1) Check-in is at 16.00 at the earliest. It's a bit late, if you want to get in, have a rest and then an early dinner.||2) The restaurant isn't open yet. They talked about another month, so check first.||3) In Germany, only energy-saving light bulbs are sold, so unless you are used to them, they are slow and not particularly bright. Our room and bedroom was unusually dark. The bathroom lights had to be on for a least five minutes before I could use the mirror properly. ||4) The bathtub plug didn't seal completely and each time I bathed, the water slowly ran out.||5) There were no twin rooms, no rooms with two single beds. They said all rooms were double beds, but the beds were single mattresses 180 cm wide, not even a full queen size. We prefer the two single mattresses either pushed together or apart.||6) There were no reading lights near or by the beds. No ceiling lights. We ended up taking the standing floor lamp, and putting it next to the bed in the evening.||7) The most negative comment was the almost non-existent wi-fi connection which they advertised. After complaining several times, they said they'd had a technician out but it still wasn't working properly. My husband along with another guest ended up sitting in the hall where the reception was strong. I cannot speak for other rooms, this was on the first (not ground floor) north side.||8) Although the hotel has two upper floors, there is no lift. If you have heavy luggage or are not a fit carrier, perhaps they will take your luggage upstairs for you. They didn't offer us. The staircase is winding and I watched older people struggle a bit going up. I don't think they have any rooms on the ground floor but don't take my word on it.||9) The location is in an industrial area, so don't expect any view of the Heidelberg beauty.||10) With these downsides, I felt the price of 99 euros per night was a bit much. I think they should have given some discount for the poor internet connection. I ended up using my mobile hot spot, and by the end of the weekend had used up all my monthly surfing surplus.||11) Even though they had a mini-kitchen with dishes, and a hot water kettle, there was no coffee or tea fixings. ||||On the upside!!||||1) The hotel was VERY clean, not "worn", and very quiet.||2) The hotel staff are very friendly and apologised over and over for the poor wi-fi reception and insisted they were working on it. Hope they get it fixed soon for future guests.||3) The breakfast (8,50 euros extra charge) was very good and they had a good selection. ||4) The decor in the hotel was tasteful and they showed some nice personal touches. I got the idea it was under new management and they are trying to their best.||5) It's a great stop if you have business or are visiting in the area. There is a REWE (good sized supermarket) just a two minute walk down the street.||6) Not sure about all rooms, but our room had a kind of mini-kitchen in the entry. The refrigerator wasn't on when we went in, and there was nothing in it. No mini-bar, but drinks were available for purchase on the ground floor, along with a bar in the lobby. As I said, if need be, food can be purchased very close by. We ended up buying a few things at the store.||7) Parking is convenient right at the front of the hotel.||||Definitely a pleasant stay. Absolut empfehlenswert! Wir waren zu zweit mit Hund dort und waren sehr zufrieden mit dem kompletten Service und Angebot. Das Hotel besteht aus zwei Komplexen, welche nicht direkt miteinander verbunden sind, aber durch einen kleinen Weg zusammenhängen. Alles ist sehr liebevoll gestaltet, in einem ansprechenden mediterranen Stil mit sehr vielen Pflanzen und passenden Materialien sowie außergewöhnlichen Details. Die Zimmer verfügen über eine Kitchenette, Badewanne /Dusche, WC, TV, Balkone, je nach Kategorie. Man fühlt sich einfach sofort wohl. Im Haupthaus befinden sich die Rezeption, Geschäftsräume, Sauna, Massage, Ruheraum (auch der Wellnessbereich ist ein Hingucker, liebevoll und stilvoll mit vielen schönen Details in Anlehnung an römische und mediterrane Badehäuser gestaltet), Frühstücksraum und weitere Zimmer.

Neben dem wirklich angenehmen Ambiente und der Gärten, ist aber besonders der Service definitiv außerordentlich gut und hervorzuheben. Freundlich und hilfsbereit, selbst bei ausgebuchtem Haus entspannt und professionell - wir haben uns sehr gut erholt und aufgehoben gefühlt.

Das Hotel liegt in Sandhausen, nicht direkt in der Umgebung bekannter Sehenswürdigkeiten, aber zentral genug um in kurzer Entfernung mit dem Auto alles erkunden zu können. In fußläufiger Nähe befinden sich 2 größere Einkaufsmöglichkeiten (REWE und Lidl), hinter dem Hotel ein normales Wohngebiet und überraschenderweise ein kleines Industriegebiet mit Fokus auf Automobile (die Industrieansiedlung fällt kaum auf, da es erstens hauptsächlich Autohändler sind und zweitens das Hotel durch sein Flair gekonnt davon ablenkt).

Abgerundet wird das ganze Angebot durch ein sehr gutes griechisches Restaurant, welches sich mit überdachter Außenterrasse zwischen Haupt- und Nebengebäude befindet und so wie integriert wirkt. Hier kann man entweder einen Abend direkt genießen oder einfach nach telefonischer oder persönlicher Bestellung Speisen auf das Zimmer bestellen und kurz abholen. Die Qualität der Speisen ist sehr gut, schmackhaft und traditionell. Preislich absolut angemessen, die Portionen groß und ausreichend. Auch hier fühlt man sich sofort wohl, der Service ist gut und sehr freundlich. Damit die Hotelgäste nicht durch das gut besuchte Restaurant gestört werden, ist ab Punkt 22 Uhr die Terrasse geschlossen. Den Trubel im Restaurant hört man dann selbst direkt gegenüber auf den Balkonen nicht mehr.

Da wir mit Hund gereist sind bleibt noch zu erwähnen, dass man auch hier wunderbar vorbereitet ist. Wir konnten unsere Hündin nach Rücksprache mit den anderen Gästen sogar mit zum Frühstück nehmen (allerdings etwas abseits mit einer sehr gehorsamen und ruhigen Hündin), einen kleinen Aufpreis für einen Hund für einen evtl größeren Reinigungsaufwand nimmt man gerne in Kauf.

Abschließend zu der uneingeschränkten Empfehlung bleibt noch die hervorragende Qualität und hygienischen Abläufe zu erwähnen - Kochgeschirr beispielsweise wird frisch desinfiziert gereinigt jedem Gast auf das Zimmer gestellt, eine Minibar findet man aus Energie- und Hygieneaspekten nur in Form einer auf Vertrauen basierenden zur Selbstbedienung Kühltruhe im Untergeschoß des jeweiligen Gebäudes.

This rustic deco style hotel is very clean and well maintained with apartment style larger than average rooms with a kitchen and a balcony. The owners and staff are very friendly and add a nice flair to the family like environment. ||The rooms do not have any air condition which can get a little hot in summer but manageable with fans provided by the hotel. Winter is not an issue as the rooms are equipped with central heating radiator units to comfortably heat the rooms. ||||The property also offers breakfast and also operates a popular restaurant called "Zum Franz'l" serving German cuisine. The hotel is close to two grocery stores (REWE and LIDL) as well as an Imbiss in case you'd want a quick bite. Sandhausen downtown is approximately a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. For the guest's convenience they also offer a shuttle service to locations in the vicinity as well as bicycles if you'd fancy to get some cardio in while exploring the surroundings. ||Overall it's been a lovely experience staying at and returning to Residenz Royal for the...
