Alm- & Wellnesshotel Alpenhof — Hotel in Schönau am Königssee

Excellent hotel! Quite near the lake (you can walk there, but we took our car, it’s a 5 minutes ride) and with a beautiful view of the forest and mountains from our room, the swimming pool area and the dining terrace, it’s indeed gorgeous. The hotel’s decoration is also wonderful. Our room was spacious (the bathroom a little tighter but we had all we needed) and the balcony was also very nice. The pillows we had the first nights were rather slim and soft, but when we asked for firmer pillows, they provided us with two more different ones so that we could choose the best. There’s no AC in the rooms (we weren’t surprised as this is quite normal in many German and Swiss hotels, for environmental reasons), but they provided a fan (it was already inside the wardrobe) that soothed our nights. The restaurant was also top notch. The food was amazing, and abundant! There was breakfast, a light lunch (salads, etc), cakes in the afternoon and a gourmet dinner included every day. We loved everything we tried. The staff was also very welcoming and professional. Only 2 suggestions: the dining room was rather hot, so maybe the AC there could be stronger or have some fans as well, and the menus could all have en English translation (we were provided with one, but since there are no fix tables, the staff couldn’t really predict where we would be sitting, so most of the times we had to use Google Translate if our menu was only in German). The swimming pool was also enjoyable as it was very hot during our stay in August and we wanted to relax between day trips. Overall, excellent hotel and we would gladly come back!

This is a stunning hotel in a stunning location. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and pretty much everyone speaks very good English. The room we stayed in was large with an incredible view of the mountains. There was a large very comfortable bed and a really nice bathroom. They have a lovely scheme where you can opt to skip housekeeping for the day and they will pay for a tree to be planted instead. The pool areas are wonderful and there are so many different areas to sit, relax and take in the views. While we were there this included paragliders floating over the valley. I was very very impressed by the food. Our first meal was the set menu for dinner. We had no idea how much it would be but we were astonished that it was only €25 each. The quality of each course was very high, so we opted to eat in the hotel each night. Breakfasts were also great with a huge choice of continental and cooked items. The selection of teas and the freshly squeezed juice were both very welcome. Between 2pm and 4pm there are also free ‘snacks’ available but this is again a sizeable selection of meat, cheese, salads, bread and absolutely delicious cakes, which were a full meal rather than a snack. I have stayed in similarly priced hotels and it always seems like the drinks and food are an absolute rip off but at the Alpenhof everything is so reasonably priced. Fitness super, Wellness solala, Essen gut.

Der Fitnessraum: Das positive zuerst. Der Fitnessbereich hat uns sehr angenehm überrascht. Viel Platz und die allerneusten Technogym Geräte. Kabelzüge, Lang- & Kurzhanteln, Beinpresse, etc. alles vorhanden. Für das Cardiotraining stehen Laufband, Rudergerät und Rad zur Verfügung. Moderne Einrichtung, Spiegel, Matten. Einfach wie im professionellen Fitness Studio.

Das Essen: Wir hatten eine Halbpension mit gebucht. Dazu gehörten Frühstück, Nachmittagsjause mit Kuchen und ein 5 Gänge Abendmenü.

Das Frühstück ist gut, es ist alles da was man braucht. Auf Wunsch bekommt man auch ein Spiegelei, usw..

Die Nachmittagsjause legt den Fokus definitiv auf die Süßspeisen. Kuchen sind zu genüge vorhanden, die Auswahl an Sauren bleibt überschaubar. Es gibt die Suppe vom Vorabend, und etwas Salat. Dazu noch ein Schinken- und Käsebrot. Mehr gibts dann leider nicht. Was kleines warmes als Ersatz zum Mittagessen sucht man leider vergeblich obwohl es eigentlich nicht viel brauchen würde. Zwei Stück Weißwurst mit süßen Senf und einer Brenzn und das hungrige Männerherz wäre glücklich gestellt.

Das Abendessen lässt keine Wünsche übrig. Das Ambiente mit Hintergrundmusik und Kerzenlicht ist wirklich sehr schön. Die Gerichte sind lecker zubereitet und satt wird man auch. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

Der Saunabereich: Das ist leider das größte Manko. Alles ist Liebevoll hergerichtet, allerdings kommt der geübte Saunagänger nicht auf seine Kosten. Es gibt zwar eine finnische Aussensauna mit wunderschöner Glasfassade und fabelhafter Aussicht in die Landschaft, allerdings fehlt die Möglichkeit einen richtigen Aufguss zu machen. Zur jeder vollen Stunde macht der Ofen einen automatischen Aufguss. Aber die Wassermenge reicht schlichtweg nicht für die große Sauna um die Leute richtig ins schwitzen zu bringen. Hier vermisst man den klassischen Saunaeimer mit Holzkelle. Wenn ein solcher mit etwas Duftaroma zur Verfügung gestellt werden würde, mache ich auch gerne die Aufgüsse selber. Aber so verbringt man ein Wellness Wochenende ohne einen einzigen richtigen Aufguss. Wirklich sehr schade. Ist man dann fertig mit dem schwitzen, sucht man draußen vergeblich nach einer Möglichkeit „ins kalte Wasser“ zu springen. Kein Kneip Becken, keine Schwalldusche, kein Eimer voll kaltem Wasser den man sich über den Kopf kippen kann. (Draußen gibt es zwar eine Wasserfalldusche, die ist im Winter aber anscheinend abgedreht….) Hier wird man als geübter Saunageher leider enttäuscht weil so manche Grundausstattung fehlt.

Zusätzlich gibt es noch einige andere Saunen mit geringeren Temperaturen und ein Dampfbad.

Drinnen gibt es genügend gemütliche Möglichkeiten sich auszuruhen und die Stille zu genießen.

Im großen hauseigenen Schwimmbad und beheizten Außenpool kann wer will noch ein paar Bahnen ziehen.

Alles in allem hatten wir einen schönen Aufenthalt hier, aber leider nicht den den wir uns von einem 4*S Hotel...
