This is a very good family owned and run hotel. 40 rooms. Located in the main street of small town Schmitten 40 kilometers north of Frankfurt. Nothing much happens there, but the hotel and bar serves as gathering place for locals at weekends, and those evenings it’s quite lively in the bar.||||Rooms were big with renovated bathrooms and good beds. Lacked minibar and morning coffee facilities though. Rooms facing the main street was quiet due to well isolated new windows. No problems getting a good night sleep.||||Food in the combined cellar restaurant and bar where very good. We had our dinners there every night during our 5-day stay, menu was varied and service excellent in a nice atmosphere.||||Breakfast was served in the ground floor combined breakfast and lunch room, also a very cozy place, by a very friendly and helpful staff.||||We were two friends golfing at the nearby Taunus golf club. A good club with very affordable green fees varying around € 30 depending on weekday. Discount for hotel guests included. No problem getting tee-times even in weekends. ||The course is typical parkland, but still with varied and interesting holes. Hotel management provided transport both ways every day as we did not have our own car, much appreciated!||||But even without a car it was easy to move around, for instance to Frankfurt, public transport works very well in Germany.||||We give the hotel our full...
Read moreYes, it is a little old-fashioned, but that can be a charming quality in this day in age when hotels tend to be souless places. This one has a real family-run feel to it and is nicely decorated in a very Germanic style, with waitresses wearing traditional German costumes with ankle length black corsetted pinafore dresses over white capped-sleeved blouses! My room was on the ground floor which had a delightful closed-in verandah type of addition at the back with very large windows letting in plenty of light to the darker front part of the room. The windows looked straight out onto a forested hill. The surroundings of the hotel were lovely and quiet as the hotel is situated in the small village of Schmitten in the Taunus Mountains. The bed (a single) was comfortable. The bathroom was miniscule and the shower head needed fixing as it squirted water right over the top of the shower stall, flooding the bathroom floor. Food was buffet style (and à la carte as well) and was quite OK for German fare. I found the manager - who was the brunt of complaint by one of the previous reviewers - to be polite and professional. My only real complaint about the hotel was that there was...
Read moreRoom was comfortable, staff was excellent. The hotel has a very good restaurant and cellar bar. The location is excellent for day hikes in the Taunus, including the Roman Limes & Grosser Feldberg. Schmitten is a quiet little town, but has easy access for sightseeing to the Roman fort at Saalburg, the Hessenpark, the spa & casino in Bad Homburg, and several area castle ruins. Franfurt is also very accessable by car, or you can drive to Oberursel and take the S-Bahn.||Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Worms & Wiesbaden are some of the other easy day...
