Hotel und Restaurant Alte Rheinmühle — Hotel in Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Gottmadingen

I have been staying here since Monday morning and I am leaving tomorrow early in the morning (Saturday). I am here on business in Schaffhausen and this hotel was minutes away. I chose it because of the good reviews and because it claimed to offer free wifi. Sadly, the wifi is not free. However, they did give me most of the time here free. I only paid 12 Francs for 72 hours. The wifi in my room on the second floor has been steady, although I have to VPN out of it to get any real speeds. That means their provider is most likely throttling things.||||At any rate, this place is beautiful. The main building, which is home to the restaurant is almost 400 years old. It feels old. Not in a stale way, but a historical way. The staff has been everything you would expect: friendly, generous, polite and professional. They typically do double duty with the front desk and the restaurant, but I have not have had any trouble with waiting when ringing the bell at the front desk.||||The restaurant is phenomenal. The food is amazing. I felt like I was a guest judge on Top Chef. It certainly earns the expensive price. A decent dinner here will set you back close to 100 Francs. That probably explains why there are expensive Mercedes and luxury cars out front during dinner. Breakfast was free and better than expected. There is the typically bread, juices, yogurts, etc. However, they also provide eggs and bacon made at your request, which were perfectly cooked. My only grips was yesterday morning, the place was infested with fruit flies. Nobody seemed to care, but it turned me off of anything other than the eggs and bacon. Thankfully this morning the pests were no longer there, although I chose to stick to the eggs and bacon again.||||The room is quaint. I do not have a desk to work at, instead it is a small half round underneath the television, which incidentally has a decent channel selection including CNN. The wardrobe is small, barely fitting a weeks worth of clothes. I did not mind though. The bathroom is large and the shower is a dream. Mine is a dual raindrop/waterfall shower and handheld sprayer. The enclosure is probably large enough for two. The water heated up almost instantly and the pressure was sublime. Nothing is worse than inadequate water pressure in a shower. To be frank and share too much, the shower was so good I found myself taking longer than normal.||||All-in-all this has been one of my most favorite places. Perhaps it is the way the staff made me feel like I was someone to be catered to. Perhaps it is sitting next to the river while dining. Either way, if it was not for having to pay for the internet and those darn fruit flies, I would have given this five stars and recommended it to even the most noble of travelers. This is a lovely old converted mill set on the banks of the Rhine directly above the river with a beautiful outdoor restaurant area . The rooms are very well appointed with excellent modernised bathrooms , and mine had a lovely river view . I had several refreshments and meals outside and the service and quality were excellent ( normal Swiss price levels ) . The wifi worked well and was free . The staff helpfulness was excellent . The service levels were typically good although just occasionally slightly slow . There is a bus to Schaffhausen station which was cheap and efficient otherwise its a short taxi ride . This was a last minute booking for a business trip but we couldn't have ben more pleased with our choice. Our room was clean and the bed very comfortable. Despite our late arrival they accommodated us for a meal on their terrace by the Rhine, which was wonderful. The breakfast room was calm and relaxing and served a delicious variety of traditional hot and cold foods. The service was exceptional from all staff but we would like to commend Markus and Isabel particularly for their patience and attention to detail.
