Maranatha beach camp is a really quirky, unique kind of place and it's hard to sum it up in a review. As other reviewers have said, it's located on a beautiful peninsula of sand jutting out between the Volta and the Atlantic, which is just heavenly. This makes it sheltered and ideal for swimming on the river-side, the ocean surf is incredibly rough and would only be suitable for very strong ocean swimmers only. There's palm trees, hammocks, gorgeous views, and a gentle sea breeze always blowing, taking the edge off the sun's heat.||||My wife and 3 kids (aged 7-11) came down and stayed 3 nights (Sat-Mon), and unfortunately on the Saturday night, a big party crowd came in from Accra with their own DJ, and they proceeded to have a 24 hour rave with deafeningly loud party/EDM/gangsta music. We're pretty used to the loud music here in Ghana, but this was really something else. The management (Isaac) was very apologetic, saying that because the party group had paid to come, then they could choose the music and he couldn't do anything about it. Eventually at 2.30am with our kids in tow, we insisted that the party-crowd reduce the volume (everyone was just hanging out, nobody was dancing) so we could at least try and get some sleep. Thankfully Ghaneans are an overall kind bunch, and the sight of our teary children must have helped sway them! But it made for a difficult night and we were on the verge of checking out early and finding somewhere else to stay. Blissfully there was a power cut at around 8am, so we were granted blessed relief from the pounding bass for a few hours! The party crowd (somewhat the worse for wear) headed off early afternoon, and we were left with the sound of the waves and breeze and the place practically to ourselves for the next 2 days.||||In this setting, we had a really amazing time - enjoying the tranquility and beautiful location. The food is generally pretty great and fairly-priced, although does arrive on ghanatime and availability on the menu can vary depending on what they've got in the kitchen any given day. The rooms are really spartan (mattress on a floor with mosquito net), but you can charge your phone at the bar. There's 2 basic but fresh showers in the shower block, and 3 flushing toilets. The pump stops during power outages so you'd need to fill buckets from the well (but the staff always willing to help out). ||||Sadly at the mouth of the volta there's a lot of rubbish that washes up, and it's less fun to swim alongside plastic bags and bottles. However the maranatha community do their best to keep the beach mostly tidy, but it's somewhat a losing battle against the hundred or so villages upstream.||||Overall a gorgeous place in the quiet, even though the facilities are all basic. Definitely ask about any party or large group bookings if you're thinking of staying on a weekend and that's not your thing. Watching the sunset over the crashing ocean waves is a...

“LONG REVIEW WITH TRAVEL TIPS”

A mini heaven on earth is the best description of how I felt at Maranatha. You’ll enjoy if you have the mindset of connecting with nature. It was a solo trip experience and I can’t wait to back there and feel the peace of mind I enjoyed.

Surrounded by islands, Maranatha is where the sky and sea meet. The trees, sun and sounds bring tranquility that one’s soul needs to feel away from the city stress. The rooms are simple and not fancy. They have no amenities like fridge, fans etc and staying in them make you feel like you’re truly camping in nature with just a chair and bed. Prices range from 80gh to 250gh and reservations can be made via call or WhatsApp.

The great thing about this place is that it allows guest bring their own food, drinks and snacks. A 3hr drive from Accra, it’s best to walk through the community to the place as opposed to going by boat which costs 80gh in and out (unless of course you want to experience the boat ride)

I loved the bonfire nights of sitting in silence and feel the sea breeze and sounds. Also loved that the sheds at the shore has sockets to charge your devices. Catching the sunrise while relaxing in the hammocks and watching the sunset while sitting at the shore was a such inexplicable experience.

The waters were so clear and clean. The tides are high so matter how much of an inexperienced swimmer you are, you’ll still feel the water at waist level right at the shore and have great fun. I didn’t eat from their restaurant so i can’t comment on that aspect but the washrooms could be better (that was the only downside for me)

TRAVEL TIPS

TRANSPORTATION: There’s a secure location to park if you’re driving there. If you’re going by public transportation, pick Ada Car from any major station in Car. Continue in a taxi from Ada station to Ada Foah at a fee of 10gh. You’ll be dropped at the last stop and pick an Okada ride for 5gh to the community where you’ll be directed to the Maranatha camp if you’re walking or to a boat ride.

FEEDING Please buy your own bottles of water, snacks, drinks, bread and any edibles on your way as food is quite costly. I’d advice you get instant coffee mix or tea for your breakfast and lots of drinks (their drinks cost 5x the price in Accra) For lunch and dinner, it’s best you move out and try other spots around so you have a total experience of the Ada Community. I’d suggest Tsarley Korpey and Heartland Hotel because they have great options (check out their reviews on my page)

EXTRA Travel essentials like towels, sunscreen, mosquito repellent spray and water bottle definitely needs to be packed Extra cash for movements in and out of the camp is important

Overall with great planning and preparation, you’ll have an awesome experience...

This is taking rusticness to the max! Completely off the beaten track living in a fisherman's village between the local people. I've stayed in both the VIP and normal huts, it is nice to have your own toilet and shower so for me worth spending bit more. |Was completely packed over the weekend with locals coming for day visits but during the week I had the place for myself. Food from their restaurant was good quality and well prepared. Enjoyed the interaction with the people living in the village: joined them playing volleyball and football on the beach. The most amazing sunrise and sunsets, well worth it getting up early for that. |Although you can book in advance via WhatsApp it's not a given that you get the room you book... looks like it is more you take what is available on the day.|Tip: bring your own hammock as was only 1 good one that you...

The Beach is very beautiful. You can see the Volta Lake entering the see. Is quite an adventure to get to the place. You have to take a motorbike and ride through some rough roads. They will alight you inside the nearby village, so you have to walk through the village to get to the place. You will see the lifestyle of the locals and you can learn a lot about the culture just by passing through. You will eventually pass by a statue wich is a God an is worshiped by the locals. The huts where you sleep in, are okay. The food is a little expensive for Ghanaian standard. But because we are smart, we just take a motorcycle to the nearby city (5min) and buy our food there. Don't go there to get good service or fancy food. The trip there is an adventure and when you go out of your comfort zone you will the greatness of the place.

Maranatha, a wasted opportunity! The one good thing here: the landscape! Really beautiful with the lagoon/river on the one side, ocean on the other. Well, If there wasnt heaps of waste lying everywhere. It reminds you more of a waste dump than a beach front. Upon arrival, toilets smeared with feces await you. The hut's beds also are dirty, but the "staff"(bunch of adolescents) doesnt seem to care, rather playing video games. Restaurant has a big menu of which approx. 95% is not available and takes hours to be prepared. All of that at big prices. No flowing water, no power wouldnt be a problem if it wasnt for 40cedi/pers/night. Hype is totally unjustified. Place is totallY run down. Never again!
