Visiting Mole National Park was the highlight of our trip to Ghana. As the other reviews have pointed out, the hotel is in an excellent location overlooking a series of waterholes where you can watch elephants, several species of antelope and birds. It's even better with a scope. The rooms, although rather uninspiring, are large and comfortable, with air con and a fridge. The restaurant was fine, with large meals that we split between us which kept costs down. I wouldn't recommend the "staff" canteen mentioned in other posts. The pool is an excellent spot to cool off from the hot sun. The hotel is a bit overpriced compared to the rest of Ghana, but very under priced for an African safari experience.
This was my first time to Africa, and as an avid birder had a really good time here. We did two early morning bird watching walking safaris which were great as we were up and gone before anyone else (6am start), with a guide to ourselves. We saw more than those on a normal walking safari as we were quieter and away early. We also did a driving safari in the afternoon which was great for picking up additional birds and seeing more of the park.
For birding, the Bradt guide recommends the ranger Zechariah Wareh, but when we asked for him we were told he doesn't work there anymore. We actually met Zechariah later ourselves when we were birding along the road into the park and he told us that he tended to be sent to the expensive lodge to guide the higher paying guests. From the little time we spent with him it was clear he knows his birds! Despite missing out on Zeachariah, we were still well served by another ranger called Robert Geli Tindana. Robert knows his birds and where to find them, but didn't have a pair of binoculars so we needed to verify some of his sightings using our scope and binoculars. Make sure you have a copy of "Birds of Ghana" handy.
The hotel grounds are also great for birding. Check the trees after dark for eagle owls and cervals. We also saw warthogs, baboons, and patas monkeys. We saw about 72 species of...
Read moreWe did a weekend trip here (tourists). Overall, the food is really good and the motel room is comfortable (we stayed in an AC roomed for party of 2). The water pressure is poor and we had to use a bucket of water to shower, which was not bad. HOWEVER, the kitchen staff's mannerism and disposition were atrocious. The kitchen staff spoiled an otherwise remarkable trip for me. They are not organized, slow and oftentimes hiss their teeth or yell. The service is all around poor
With regards to organized transportation by the motel: be warned they may try to upcharge you even after an agreement upon price. The location is 3-4hrs away from the airport in Tamale. We agreed upon 1500 cedi for a roundtrip transportation, but at the end our stay, the driver in conjunction with the motel wanted and did charged us an additional 300 cedi for "AC"
With regards to group activities: the other tourists/locals staying the Mole Motel were friendly and we went on safari together (walk, drive, and night). Just a heads up, the price for a safari is a fixed Jeep price and an individual person price (for example, the night safari cost us 400 cedi total for the Jeep and 75 cedi per person. There were 8 of us who went on the night safari so we spilled the cost 8 ways. However, if for illustrations, there were only 2 persons for the night safari then the 400 cedi would have to be spilt 2 ways plus the 75 cedi per person).
With regards to the Mole Motel front desk staff: overall they are nicer than the motel motel kitchen staff.
Overall, the trip was nice -- I enjoyed the safaris and the food was...
Read moreI can not recommend coming here!!! It might be ok during the week but on the weekend they have more guests then they can handle. So the place feels crowed and the nature experience is getting lost. I had to wait to 6pm until a room was finally ready, and there where several things broken in the room, like the tap of the bathroom sink and the fan.
The service at the restaurant is extremely bad and rude: you will have to wait about 2h for your food and have to eventually go to the kitchen yourself to get it because the service personal does not care about doing their job unless it is about you signing your bills because if they don't collect your signature they would have to pay out of their own pocket. The food is ok but not worth the price. And at the time i was there i had run out of most of the foods including: Coke, bred for sandwiches, vegetables. When confronting Ken at the reception about the short comings he became extremely offensive, stating that he does not care about complains that he did everything right and i was being difficult and the manager or management is not to be spoke to.
Unfortunately you don't have that many options in the area. If you can afford it visited Zainia lodge do that, there are some cute hotels outside the park. Or if you really want to experience nature speak to the safari center just before mole motel. If you bring food and drinks pay for a car to drop you there and for the guide to come along you can cap in the middle of the park. They have tents that...
