I was lucky enough to choose this place for my summer vacation. I could not be happier because this place has a unique beauty and is a true treasure for the island of Ikaria. When we arrived two members of the family were waiting for us in the port in order to take us to the facility. They were really kind and as they drove us to the winery they gave us a small tour explaining everything and recommended places that we should visit. We stayed in an amazing traditional room and I was able to enjoy the sunset everyday. The rooms were perfect and very clean and the hosts were always kind and really helpfull with everything we needed. We were able to take cooking lessons with Mrs. Eleni and then we sat in a traditional really big table with the family discussing while tasting the food that we made in the cooking lessons and they even offered us their amazing wine. Also, we arranged with the oenologist of the winery Iliana the daughter of Mr Karimalis a wine tasting, where we were able to try traditional dishes that they recommend with each wine. She also gave us a tour in their winery explaining everything from how they harvest the grapes until the point that they make their wine and the place that it is stored.
I definetely recommend this place for summer but also for winter. My next vacation which will be in winter, will be in this place again with this amazing people.
Even if you don't find rooms to stay there you should definetely visit this place in order to take the traditional cooking lessons and the amazing wine tasting experience.
Thank you Karimalis family, this was an...
Read moreFamily run by masters of farm, vineyard, food and wine, this idyllic, rustic getaway overlooking the Icarian & Aegean seas is- for this world traveler- a place I will always cherish. Staying with the Karimalis' gave me an unforgettable experience! Every morning Eleni would prepare (from her great grandmother's sourdough starter- it's still alive!) a new giant loaf of sourdough bread, while laying out a beautifully inspired breakfast spread. We would eat in the kitchen, sharing table with the family and other guests from various parts of the globe. George showed us his gorgeous vineyards, along with a tour of his winemaking facility as well as a medieval-style "barn house restaurant" on his property- one that he and a friend are literally building BY HAND (it looked like an ancient stone church). All day there were tasks- mostly related to food. I was in HEAVEN. I learned so much, was allowed to participate, and was told countless stories that charmed and enlightened me over the five days I resided with them. The accommodations, humble as they are, sufficed just fine for us. Exploring the island was a joy. As a singer, I was asked to share music, which I joyfully did in the evenings. A series of perfect nights- with wine glass in hand (grapes grown, fermented and bottled right there), mind-blowing dinner spread, laughter, stories, music and new friendships being born- are forever etched in my memory, and, tastebuds. It may seem "out of the way", well, because... it is. Depart the "way" you're used to just for a moment in time and you'll discover something timeless and...
