Our little slice of paradise at Kaminos Evia
We stumbled upon this gem completely by accident, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those happy mistakes that make for the best travel stories.
Getting there is half the adventure The narrow coastal road from Limni had us holding our breath a few times – it's basically a one-lane squeeze where you pray you don't meet another car coming the other way! But you know what? It actually added to the charm. By the time we arrived, we felt like we'd discovered some secret hideaway that the tourist crowds hadn't found yet.
Our home away from home Our room was absolutely lovely – spacious enough that we weren't tripping over each other, with 2 beds so comfortable I actually overslept twice (which never happens!). Everything was spotless, and I mean everything. The decor had that perfect balance of being tasteful without feeling stuffy or hotel-generic.
The garden that stole our hearts I'm not usually one to gush about landscaping, but wow. The gardens here are clearly someone's labor of love. We spent hours just wandering around with our morning coffee, and the sea view... well, let's just say my phone storage took a serious hit from all the photos I couldn't resist taking.
We did enjoy a couple of lazy afternoons by the pool – those sun loungers under the big tree were perfect when we needed to properly unwind with a book and a cold drink.
Practical stuff (because someone has to mention it) WiFi worked great everywhere – even my teenager couldn't complain, and trust me, that's saying something. Plenty of parking spots, mostly shaded, which saved our rental car from becoming a mobile oven.
Beach adventures and the real discovery The little beach right in front is rocky rather than sandy, but it's got character. We used it once or twice, but the real magic happened when we started our daily adventures north.
Every morning after breakfast, we'd drive about an hour north to discover these absolutely incredible sandy beaches with the most charming, unpretentious beach bars – you know, the kind of places where they serve cold beer in plastic cups and the music isn't trying too hard to be cool. These little seaside villages felt completely authentic, where we could spend entire days just soaking up genuine Greek coastal life. Having Kaminos as our peaceful base to return to each evening was the perfect setup – adventure by day, tranquil retreat by night.
Food adventures The hotel doesn't do dinner, which initially had us panicking. Best thing that could have happened! It forced us to drive into Limni every evening, and those waterfront tavernas... incredible food at prices that made us wonder if we'd misunderstood the exchange rate. Fresh, traditional, and the kind of portions that left us happily defeated.
Lunch by the pool was perfect for those rare lazy days when leaving felt like too much effort – simple, fresh, and exactly what you want when you're in vacation mode.
The people who made it special Our hosts were just wonderful. Not in that overly professional way that feels rehearsed, but genuinely warm people who clearly love what they do. They made us feel less like guests and more like friends who'd come to visit.
If I'm being picky... Mosquito screens would be nice (we learned to keep the doors closed at dusk), and a place to hang wet swimsuits on the balcony would be handy. Oh, and breakfast on an outside terrace? That would be perfect.
Would we go back? In a heartbeat. We're already talking about next year. There's something about this place that just gets under your skin in the best possible way – peaceful without being boring, beautiful without being show-offy, and the perfect base for both relaxation and exploration.
If you're looking for a proper Greek island experience that combines a tranquil retreat with access to authentic local...
Read moreWe just returned after a 12-day vacation spent in Kaminos. This was the 7th year we chose Kaminos for our summer vacation. Why? Because the place is absolutely wonderful and over the years the owners, hotel managers and employees who took care of it have offered us the most beautiful moments, the best hospitality that we could have ever imagined, along with special culinary experiences. Naturally, it was also our choice to return to Kaminos this year. But the disappointment was huge. At the time of check-in, the hotel manager told us that the restaurant is not working and that we can only serve breakfast (included in the room price) and some snacks in the pool area.
We were surprised, because the Almyra restaurant was presented on the hotel's website as open for an exquisite beach-front dining experience. But we thought we had to adapt to the new conditions and move on. On one of the first days, we decided to have lunch in the pool area, and chose from an extremely limited menu - from what I remember now, there were hot dogs, burgers, pizza, chicken nuggets. The huge surprise was when we received food in plastic boxes, just like in a takeaway system. How is this possible in a 4-stars hotel? Although we complained about this and told the waiter that we refuse to eat in boxes, after he communicated this to the hotel manager, the answer was that these are the rules.
We would have expected the hotel manager to talk to us, to explain, but this did not happen, neither then nor until our departure. It is incredible that in a place where, over time, we ate probably the tastiest Greek dishes, we had to choose from this extremely poor and inappropriate menu (we did not come to Greece to eat hot dogs or burgers ). Since then we refused to eat lunch (because dinner was out of the question) at Kaminos and every day we had to drive 3 km at least once a day to Limni where we could eat. I just cannot imagine this experience with small children.
The breakfast was also mediocre (maybe sub-mediocre), very limited in terms of variety (I don't think I'll ever eat mushroom omelet again); I understand that not all guests can be satisfied, but the difference compared to previous years was huge, in a negative sense.
The area around the swimming pool is very exposed to the sun – there is a wooden pergola that in previous years was covered with an awning - which offered a very useful shaded space. This year it didn't have the awning, so the only shaded area where we could take refuge was under the big tree.
The beach was very nicely arranged, with new sunbeds; only the umbrellas seemed too small, so that after 4:00 PM they were really useless.
In the room, as a plus compared to previous years, we found a kettle and a coffee machine - we appreciated it and seems fair to mention this too.
The staff (excluding the hotel management) was however wonderful; they did everything they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Without them, our vacation at Kaminos would have been much worse. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for this!
If we had to give marks for our experience at Kaminos, they would be:
Food/Restaurant 1 Location 5/5 Staff (excluding the Hotel Manager and the Chef)- 5 Rooms 4/5 - impeccable cleanliness but: there is no curtain in the bathroom and when taking a bath there was very, very much water on the floor; there is no hair dryer in the bathroom; the tiles were changed this year, which is very good, but the adhesive used was not cleaned in time, so now the tiles looked dirty; this is certainly not the fault of the cleaning ladies, who did an exemplary job; one of the internet sockets hangs from the wall, just like the power socket above the kitchen counter;
Although this year Kaminos operated more like a bed and breakfast Hotel, we hope that all the aspects that made us unhappy will be fixed...
Read moreThe rooms are spacious and clean. Good balconies with amazing (sea) view. Nice pool area and beach area. The old factory looks cool (maybe put up a sign with some history about the place, or even better give a short tour). 5 min drive to the village.
The breakfast buffet is good, but the air conditioning was broken, so quite hot inside. Opening windows on the top floor would've helped. Some tables outside (in the shade) would have been nice. Maybe because it was June and not yet high season.
There is no dinner/food in the evening (and afternoon) unfortunately. Some pizza or something might be something to consider. The whole place looks like a stone oven haha.
The (pool) bar had no ice creams in their (broken?) freezer. How difficult can that be to fix quickly. Also a 330ml beer was 5 euro, way too much (compared to the rest of the island), which is quite a bad service to your guests. So we brought our own drinks to the pool. Suggestion: 2,90 for 330ml and 4,90 for 500ml. Also make a menu for your pool guests (with drinks, cocktails, bites/food, coffee).
We had a pleasant stay, but with some small improvements the place has so much...
