This is a family's winery, and the experience felt very personal, in a lovely way. The style and painting of the large house echoes the homes in the old town section of Veroia, a 15 minute drive away.||SERVICE: I didn't encounter bad service anywhere in Greece. The hosts were friendly and helpful, making good suggestions about places to see. At the end, they sent me off with (table) grapes from the orchard.||ROOM: I had the basic class room, which was large and pleasant and would be fine for a couple. Decor is homestyle, mostly large wooden pieces. If you are looking for a place to plug something in near the bed, the outlet the lamps are plugged into are set up to allow it. The room had a simple window, but going outside was a lovely view of the orchard and past that, a handsome view down to the reservoir.||BREAKFAST: Made to order by the hosts, a large selection and generous, including an omelet. I loved the Greek pastries.||PARKING: Right in the driveway.||LOCATION AND SIGHTS: Vergina is under 10 minutes away. As the hosts suggested, I went to the main museum before going to the tombs themselves. That's a good order, you learn a lot about what you are seeing at the tombs from the museum. There is about a 5 minute drive between them.||You likely are considering visiting for Vergina, but don't sleep on Veroia, which is in the other direction. The old town is fascinating, the Byzantine Museum is a must-see, as good as the one in Thessaloniki. Parking in Veroia is a nightmare, but I took my host's advice and parked near the Byzantine Museum, than walked about 10-15 minutes to the old town. If you'd like to see the Jewish Synagogue, you will need to call in advance. It was not even open during...
Read moreMy wife and I spent a night at Domaine Kalaitzis in March 2018, and truly wish we'd spent more time there. My +/- review:||||Plus||------||||* Beautiful Location -- It would be difficult to find a more relaxing environment than Kalaitzis, which is situated on a hillside overlooking Veroia. The building is surrounded by the vineyard (not a commercial vineyard - the wine produced supports only the hotel restaurant). When we arrived from Ohrid (via Bitola and Edessa), we just wanted to relax, and Kalaitzis was a great place to do it.||||* Restaurant -- Great food and wine. While the menu is not large, the owner/chef was able to accommodate my unusual diet (vegetarian/gluten-free). ||||* Quality Suite -- Our room was large, with wood paneling, an ample bathroom, and views of the vineyard.||||Minus||-------||||* Shower/Jacuzzi -- Minor detail, but there wasn't really a shower, just a Jacuzzi with a hose extension. Made for a bit of a challenge showering without taking a mess! Also, the Jacuzzi took a really long time to fill up (~30 min). ||||* Empty -- This is both a plus and a minus. Was very peaceful, but felt a little odd that there weren't any other folks visiting either the hotel or restaurant the night we stayed at Kalaitzis - was just my, my wife, and the proprieter. Will attribute this to the timing of our visit (late March, just after several...
Read moreWe booked our one-night stay at the last moment as our self-drive tour went a bit awry at the end of our holiday. Fortunately, they had a deluxe room available which proved to be very comfortable, complete with jacuzzi bathtub, which was much appreciated after a fraught journey.||The hotel,- a new-build (but in traditional style) is surrounded by vineyards, feels quite isolated on its’ lonely hilltop, but of course this means it makes for a very peaceful, tranquil setting, overlooking Haliacmon reservoir. Its’ location means it a perfect bolt-hole for visiting the archaeological sites of Vergina only a short distance away. I should imagine it is also a popular venue for weddings and other functions. ||The owners are a delightful husband and wife team who seem to run the place single-handedly when things are quiet. Indeed, while there, apart from another couple, we had the place to ourselves resulting in the evening meal in the restaurant being disappointing. The breakfast, on the other hand, was splendid with all manner of Greek specialities. ||Quiet,...
