I am writing this review publicly in order to inform, not to cause damage to a locally owned business or to vent. I feel that potential guests at The Bay House should be aware of a few things. And I hope that ownership at The Bay House can work to improve.
First and foremost, it is true that the views from the balcony are spectacular. What isn't mentioned is that the view comes at the cost of being fairly high up the hillside at the top of a VERY steep and narrow road. This is a challenging location! Every time that you leave the hotel in order to head to the beach or into St. George's (and you will have to leave, as dining options at Bay House are very limited. More on that later...) you will need to plan ahead and carry everything that you need for the day with you. You will also likely need to budget for a taxi back up the hill, about $15 USD every time.
Since we are talking about the location and the hill... travellers should be informed that this is a pretty hotel, yes, but NOT a pretty neighbourhood. 100 feet from the hotel you will find abandoned cars on the side of the road, garbage all over the roadside, a couple of pretty shady local "bars" with clientele to match, etc. etc. Be aware.
A few points about the hotel itself. The rooms are not well appointed. No dressers to unpack clothing. No shelves of any kind. No desk, no table and no chairs. You get a bed and two small nightstands without drawers. That's it. In the bathroom - same deal. No vanity to unpack toiletries. No shelf of any kind in the shower. Which is also the toilet. They've gone with a "wet room" kind of idea, so no shower curtain or glass divider anywhere. So the floor is always wet throughout the whole bathroom. On the balcony, amazing view! Tough to enjoy it in a small uncomfortable wire chair with no cushion and not even a small table to put a glass of wine on. We carried out one of the nightstands from the room.
And finally, eating and drinking. The heart of most vacations. Well... it's basically a no-go at The Bay House. The first night we arrived after 6:00 PM we were told that there were no more reservations available at the restaurant. Sorry. So you guessed it - long and steep trip down the hill in the dark, through "the hood" to look for something to eat in an area we had never seen before in daylight. And - $15 USD cab ride back up the hill to get home. Next morning Breakfast. $17 USD each for some fruit, yogurt, toast, jam and cold coffee that you serve yourself. Third night we made a dinner reservation for 7:00. We were basically told that we needed to come at 6. Although the restaurant was very quiet, I guess the staff had better things to do that evening than stay and serve dinner when people actually wanted to eat.
We booked 6 nights at The Bay House. On the morning after our third night my wife informed a staff member at breakfast that the coffee was, once again, cold. She was visibly scowled at by this staff member. No apology. No explanation. Just a dirty look. Like it was our fault for wanting actual hot coffee. We had seen enough to know that it was time to cut our losses and change accommodations. At no small expense we forfeited our last three nights at Bay House, packed our bags and moved down the hill to a simple, well priced hotel right on the beach. A hotel that had a table in the room. And a dresser. And a shelf in the bathroom. And a wonderful coffee shop across the road that made fresh hot coffee every morning. It's the little things. This move saved...
Read moreAnnie picked my husband and I up at the airport and was very timely. She even pointed out points of interest while driving to the Hotel. The front desk staff upon arrival and check-in was great. Very helpful and giving insight of the area. Even allowed us to check in early which was much appreciated after a very early flight in from Trinidad. When arriving to the room, the bed was decorated with congratulations as we were there celebrating my birthday and an early baby moon.
The room was nice, small with a king sized bed, but European plugs throughout, so if you're traveling from the US or Trinidad and primarily use Type A or B plugs dont forget your adapters! The bathroom, however, was not ideal. Everything in one room with no seperation. The toilet in one corner, the sink in another, and the shower in the 3rd corner. It made showering very difficult as water went everywhere, even when using the rainfall shower head. There's no shelf or anything to place your items. I had to place everything on the edge of the sink and walk back and forth to get my items.
The wifi is horrible in our room. It would cut in and out and thankfully we had an eSim or we would be in a bad spot with service.
Our first night we had dinner downstairs and were 1 of 3 tables having dinner. We didn't get greeted upon arrival, but had to peek around the corner to find the server on her phone and asked if we could have dinner. Once seated, she brought our menus, but never once brought us water until we asked during our dinner. I understand its a small kitchen and there was a table of 4 before us so we were prepared to wait. When our food finally arrived, my husband's steak was overcooked when he asked for medium, as well as my burger. The fries took an extra bit of time to come out as well. Then when we finished we had to find the server again to ask for our bill. The next morning breakfast was a continental and had fresh fruit, cereal, breads, and weak coffee. You had an option to add eggs and a meat, but we were off to catch the ferry to Carriacou.
Lastly, upon departure, the staff member checking us out of the room said the only thing outstanding was the evening's dinner amount of $60usd. I said correct, as I knew that remaining. However, when she gave me the receipt of what was charged it was an additional $350USD. She said it was outstanding from check-in, but I showed She did do a charge back/refund, which I'm still awaiting for it to fall of my account.
We didn't use the pool, but it did look nice.
The surrounding area was a bit sketchy but it all seemed to melt away once you were...
Read moreMemorable hilltop views from the nice, clean pool area. Very attractive lobby. Pleasant and helpful staff. We had a well prepared dinner here one night and it was good, but food and drink a bit pricey here compared to other places down by the beach. Room 15 clean-ish, there were two dead roaches visible in a clear plastic electrical box, sheets were washed but a few little specs of ??? on them. Room 15 has two bedrooms and a large bathroom that is up three marble steps, thus is not an “accessible” room but manageable. Water was not hot one afternoon but worked at all other times. The door to room 15 is very old and the lock was challenging to lock and unlock. Room 15 has no windows but for at the top of the door, some may feel a bit of a dungeon effect. But it does have a sofa and would be great for a small family. The once daily free shuttle down the hill to the beach was not available at the appointed time because we did not reserve it and we showed up only 2 minutes before departure and thus the staff had released the driver a minute before we turned up. So we walked down the steep hill. We actually walked back to this hotel at night from the beach and it was a long steep climb but doable and safe. Also, when we checked out, we were asked to pay another 10% tax that our booking website did not mention, so manager here took that off our bill, other Grenada hotels did not charge us two 10% taxes, only one, looking at the internet it is unclear to me what’s correct. The free continental breakfast was okay, but get there before others as the re-stock after the initial wave is painfully slow, had to ask for everything one by one, like they did not know to re-stock bread, butter, plates, coffee cup despite me standing there waiting! Anyways this place was okay and room rate was reasonable. The pool and view are awesome. Lobby...
