Nice firm beds, decent shower (rooftop-warm only, no hot water heater), big pool. But best was the service of the manager, Victor, who arranged a tour for us with the cooperative in Mucbilha. We wanted to hike up to the top of one of the many small, steep hills at the north end of the Sierra de Chama, where Guatemala starts to be pleated into endless repeating ranges with no straight roads. He organized that with Don Marcelio, who has lived in Mucbilha all his life (55 years). Mucbilha is just up the road from the hotel, and then a classically Guatemalan windy up-and-down road in to the tiny village. With Don Marcelio in front with a machete and Victor behind double-checking the route, we bushwhacked the only lightly worn path to the top for an amazing view. Then Don Marcelio took us tubing on the river that runs through part of the Candelaria Caves, which was fairly low at this time of year in the middle of the dry season and had some gorgeous hidden gardens. This was purely local: no travel agent, no fancy gear, just locals sharing in what they hope will be sustainable tourism. In fact, the cooperative runs the hotel as well.
