My friend Louise and I met in Guatemala for a short vacation in January 2017. From the time our driver picked us up at the airport in Guatemala City until we left, we were showered affection and attentiveness.
The food is delicious and nourishing - they have a huge vegetable garden that you can tour with its caretaker. Every morning we had breakfast on the terrace of the restaurant and enjoyed the featured warm drink of the day, a delicious breakfast and a spectacular view of Lake Atitlán. Each wonderful meal was prepared under the guidance of Chef Chati. The hotel is beautifully decorated and its gardens are beautiful and ideal for relaxing. You will find treasures all around, such as stained-glass art, pottery and lovingly cared-for plants.
Oh and what a wonderful thing it was to be staying at a place where one feels so good, 'cause on the third day of our stay, Louise broke her ankle as we hiked down a mountain! Not knowing anyone else, we reached out to the hotel and everyone at there helped us, arranging with a local hospital to care for Louise and taking us there and back to the hotel. Our driver and guide stayed with us until Louise returned to her room that night. Thank you to all the staff at Hotel Tolimán for looking after Louise with such warmth.
If you want to be in a beautiful, quiet place away from the hustle and bustle, I highly recommend Hotel Toliman. From there you can visit by boat or by road all the other villages on the shores of Lake Atitlán. It is a haven of peace that feeds the spirit and the body. ;-)
April 2019 -- I've dined at the hotel's restaurant several times recently while I visit San Lucas Tolimán again. The food is delicious--every dish is a feast for the taste buds...and the eyes. They use fresh ingredients from their own organic garden and service...
Read moreI didn't stay at the hotel but I was connected by a friend to Juanita and Ónice, who run tours for the hotel. I have nothing but great things to say about them! They worked with me to create a personalized full-day tour that included kayaking on the lake, hiking up the Cerro de Oro, and going to a local beekeeper's farm. They gave me about a dozen options of different activities I could include in my tour, including outdoors activities and cultural experiences. They are clearly well-connected and well-respected in the community of San Lucas, which is not generally known for tourism as much as other towns around the lake. I really respected their love for the community and their desire to bring more tourists there in a sustainable way that benefits local people. I had a ton of fun on my tour and would definitely have gone back to San Lucas if I had more time! I also enjoyed eating breakfast and lunch at the hotel between my activities - the food was great and all the staff were very friendly. It was beautiful to watch the afternoon fog roll in from the hills to cover the lake while I ate lunch. In short, if you want to see a part of the lake community that not many people get to see, support an amazing local business, and have a ton of fun - then Hotel...
Read moreThis is a very nice place. The grounds are large and (for Guatemala) quiet, full of beautiful well-tended gardens. The rooms are clean and comfortable, though not updated. The restaurant is the best in town, though not particularly creative - expect well-executed but pricey platos tipicos with fantastic lake views. The staff were unfailingly kind, though they didn't have a lot of confident English. Between our high school Spanish skills and their English efforts, we made it work. They arranged a couple of really special local tours for us. San Lucas Toliman is not a big tourist town, so this is the place to come if you want a more local experience than some of the other lake villages provide, along with a few...
