Hotel Guanaja is an absolute paradise! Our cabana was steps from the beach where our kids could fish, snorkel or take scuba lessons at anytime during our trip. Every morning the grounds were maintained perfectly and fresh, sweet coconuts were gathered by the friendly gardeners, chopped a few times with a machete, and ready to drink for the ultimate natural morning hydration. We discussed our activity plans for the next day every evening with Wilson, the manager and everything was always perfectly ready to go. Most days we would pack a cooler with lunch and beverages, and Darryl, one of the local guides on staff at the hotel, would take us to a picture perfect caye without any other people in sight where we would spend most of the day exploring the coral reefs, fishing, and searching for iguanas, hermit crabs and the like. We were given historical facts constantly about the island and the cayes around the area whenever we would take a trip on the water or in a small taxi that could come and drive around the island on a tour. It is truly an incredible $5 taxi drive along the coast and into the towns within the mountains of the island. We rarely ate outside of the resort, the food, prepared by local staff was absolutely incredible. Many people come from around the island and other resorts to eat and hang out in the relaxed setting in the bar, so you know you're in the right place. Highest recommendation goes to the conch soup but the whole fried snapper with coconut rice and beans is close! We have been to several similar resorts in the caribbean and Hotel Guanja is the REAL DEAL for a beach front, relaxing and adventurous hoe away from home.||*We traveled from Miami to Roatan and took the ferry over to Guanja, traveled to several towns and villages while we were on the island with our two sons under 13 years old, and at no time did we feel unsafe...
Read moreImagine the Hotel-Manager Wilson being your dive-guide - diving in shorts and a white shirt and showing you the beauty of the unspoiled coral-reef in front of the Hotel. He also helped us to get out of the jungle and back to the hotel after my girlfriend broke her toe while hiking to a beautiful waterfall on the other side of the island. Quite an adventure that ended well thanks to Wilson. That´s Hotel Guanaja - you feel at home and taken care of by the whole staff. The place is just beautiful. The cabins are spacious and directly in front of the beach. On the front porch you will find a hammock and a swing bench. You feel like you are in a private place having your own cabin. Breakfast and dinner are served on the terrace of the hotel. As the island has just one road everybody moves around by boat. There is a jetty in front of the hotel. You arrive here after a boat-trip from the Airport. And as a diver this is the place to start your daily tour. The dive center is part of the hotel-complex and you can plan your dives very individually according to your level and expectations.
So close to the equator you´ll have at least one heavy rain per day - but it passes as fast as it comes and helps to cool down a bit.
We have been on Guanaja in August 2022, and due to the power supply on the island there have been power-cuts nearly every day ranging from one to four hours. We have been told that in february 2023 there will be a completely new power-station on the island providing enough electricity for everybody - so let's hope for the best. During the power-cuts you will be rewarded with an awesome night-sky - as there is no light pollution from other islands or cities nearby. So just relax, lay down on the jetty and enjoy the milky way over your head. We loved the place and will surely come...
Read moreWe stayed at the hotel for 7 nights in May 2024, and did 6 days of diving. The manager, Gabby, and hotel staff were gracious and accommodating. Our room was a sea front cabana. The room was spacious and the patio had a swing and hammock. Generally, we used the a/c at night and opened the shutters during the day. The shutters had screens allowing the breeze to come through but not bugs. The food at the hotel is very good, and the staff were willing to accommodate my vegetarian diet. Our divemaster was Roberto. He was friendly and great at finding the smallest creatures! Roberto and the boat drivers also arranged for us to have lunch at the Green Flash and dinners at Graham's Place and Mi Casa Too. All the food was yummy! Unfortunately while we were there the water was rough and the smoke from mainland wildfires muted the sun, so the boat rides were bumpy and the water was not as bright as we would have liked. Getting to the island we chartered a prop plane from Roatan and going home we took the ferry from Guanaja. Both are good options. Keep in mind you are going to an island that is less developed than more popular tourist locations. All our travel was by boat. We were not in a car from the moment we landed on the island. The electricity can be finicky making...
