I led a photography group through the area in February 2024, and we used this hotel for two nights. It's a decent 3-star hotel, very typical of what you would expect around Iceland.
The biggest thing I would point out to folks traveling in the Winter is that they essentially don't even try to maintain their parking lot. The sheet of ice in the parking lot was really dangerous, and they made almost no attempt to put sand or gravel down. Even when they watched me escorting 78 year old travelers across the ice, they didn't take any initiative to add any gravel.
The restaurant was a bit sub-par compared to other hotels in this category around Iceland. They had rather limited menu options and it was considerably more expensive than the quality of the preparation would have suggested. This is a location-based hotel, very close to a major destination, and that is certainly why the prices are able to be as inflated as they are.
Breakfast is included, as it is in most hotels in Iceland. It was a decent breakfast buffet. They had a terrific assortment of fresh fruits, which were delicious. They had the typical assortment of cold cuts, a bread bar, a few pastries, a skyr area with 3 or 4 flavors of skyr plus granola, etc. They did not have the 'scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, baked beans' station that is pretty common around Iceland, but there was certainly plenty of food for everyone to figure out a breakfast for themselves.
I booked our 7 rooms directly through the hotel, and was very surprised to find out that it was FAR more expensive to go through the hotel to book a group than it would have been to book their rooms on Expedia or other travel discount sites. When I asked the hotel to match the rate they offer on those booking sites, they refused.
Hotel Gullfoss is far from the worst and also far from the best of hotels in the 3-star category around Iceland. They are average, but because they are just a few minutes down the road from Gullfoss, they have "location, location, location". My future tours will most likely not use this facility again. I would book there in a pinch, if necessary, but it is definitely not on my list of "ideal" hotels around...
Read moreHotel Gullfoss was a DREAM to stay at! The service was excellent. You can really tell it’s family owned (since 1988). We had dinner at the dining room (make a reservation for this) and was one of the best meals we had in our whole trip. The best part of staying here was seeing the Northern Lights. Bc it’s so far away from Reykjavík or any other larger city, you really get a good show even from your own bedroom window! We would stay here a million more times if we could. This B and B is so close to Gullfoss Waterfall (5 min drive) and Geysir/Strokkur (15 min drive) it’s a must to stay at if you’re doing the Golden Circle and don’t want to drive all the way back to Reykjavík or Vík. Amazing views and clean fresh mountain air. Our ONLY complaint is that the bathroom smelled like sulphur but I think it has to do w the water itself. PS The rooms are much nicer than they appear online. Don’t hesitate...
Read moreA very nice and clean hotel, family run since 1988. Beautiful and quiet location about three kilometers south of Gulfoss on the Hvítá. There is also a nice hiking trail to the Gullfoss and along the canyon directly in front of the hotel. Very friendly staff and good service. The spacious double rooms are clean, bright and modernly furnished. From the restaurant with its high window wall, the view extends far into the plain along the Hvítá. Very tasty Icelandic à la carte dishes are served here in the evening - the lamb is highly recommended! Another positive thing to mention is that the food was cooked with local ingredients with no additives. The breakfast buffet offers an acceptable selection, of which we especially liked the homemade bread. One of the most beautiful hotels on our trip through Iceland! Thank you...
