We embarked on a unique journey to Panihar, starting with a train ride from NDLS to CDG on Janashadabthi Train No. 12057, a budget-friendly option at 150 rupees per person. The train departed at 2:30 PM and arrived at CDG by 6:30 PM. From there, we boarded a Flix bus to AUT at 12:30 midnight, costing 350 rupees per person. We reached AUT at 5 AM, greeted by a dark landscape and a few waiting cab drivers.
After negotiation, we hired a cab for 1700 rupees to take us to Panihar village, a 33-kilometer uphill journey. The winding mountain roads, dense forests, and darkness added to the thrill and a bit of fear. The skilled driver navigated the narrow roads, though the bumpy ride caused motion sickness. We finally reached Panihar at 7:30 AM, after a one-and-a-half to two-hour drive.
Gopalji, our host, was waiting for us at the trolley station. This unique system, where luggage is transported via a ropeway, was a fascinating sight. It's a necessity in this remote location, as the road doesn't reach all the way to the homestay.
The village itself is quite steep, requiring constant climbing. We were unprepared for the cold, as we weren’t wearing the right clothes. The homestay, nestled in a mountain valley, is a peaceful retreat. A short 5-10 minute hike from the main road leads to the homestay.
The neighborhood is a close-knit community, with everyone knowing each other. There's a small shop owned by Gopalji's brother, where you can buy basic necessities. They are even willing to deliver groceries to your doorstep.
Gopalji is a wonderful host who provided delicious home-cooked meals, including mutton soup and a traditional Himachali dish called Sidhu. He's also a dedicated teacher, spending his afternoons at the local school. He even took us on a hike to a nearby tower with breathtaking views.
While this place may not be suitable for everyone, it's a paradise for nature lovers and those who enjoy hiking and peaceful surroundings. Don't expect modern amenities or a bustling town. The charm lies in its simplicity and tranquillity.
