Disheartening Experience at Gorukana - A Far Cry from Ayurvedic Wellness”

Our stay at Gorukana was deeply disheartening and fell far short of expectations. The management, particularly the lady in charge, displayed a level of rudeness and unprofessionalism that I have never encountered in my travels. Her confrontational attitude when we inquired about certain issues, combined with a complete lack of apology, reflected a dictatorial management style that is unacceptable in the hospitality industry.

To start, upon our arrival on a Friday when the resort was not busy, we were given no introduction or overview of Gorukana, its facilities, or the activities available. There was a complete lack of initiative to involve us in the advertised evening or morning walks, leaving us clueless and unengaged

The resort failed to provide basic amenities; for instance, we were not provided with enough blankets on our first night, leading to a great deal of discomfort. Worse still, there was no way to contact the staff for assistance later.

On top of these issues, when we checked out a mere 30 minutes past the standard time and requested an additional cup of tea, instead of compensating for their earlier mistakes, they had the audacity to charge us extra for the tea.

Additionally, the resort’s claim of being an Ayurvedic and wellness center is highly questionable. They serve non-vegetarian food, which is contrary to Ayurvedic principles. The lack of Ayurvedic or wellness activities was stark; the only remotely related feature was a small garden with minimal variety. There were no signs of any Ayurvedic masseurs or even a price list for such services.

Moreover, the resort seems to have a set of arbitrary rules not listed in their policy while neglecting the ones that are. Despite a stated policy against accommodating all-male groups, there were several such groups during our stay. This selective enforcement of rules adds to the confusion and frustration.

In conclusion, Gorukana not only falls short in providing basic hospitality services but also fails to live up to its claims of being an Ayurvedic wellness retreat. The management’s lack of regard for guest comfort, combined with the absence of promised amenities and services, makes this a place I cannot recommend to anyone seeking a genuine...

The cottages are on a coffee estate and is located soon after the checkpost, 4 kms from the BR temple. As the property is on a coffee estate adjacent to the forest range, its very quite and amidst nature. though 300 mts from the tribal village, its very quite and calm. You will hardly hear any sound of the vehicles honking on the road leading to the BR hills. The property has a stream of water running through on of the corners. There is a walking path carved out beside the water stream through the cottages which gives a beautiful feel. There is ample parking space for the four wheelers in the property. The property has a manager but is mainly managed by the locals (tribals). The staff is very accommodative and helpful. The food is alright but not very consistent in the preparation or the taste. Buffet is what is provided out here for all the 3 times. There is hi-tea served with pakodas in the evenings. The rooms or the cottages........look very elegant from the outside. These cottages has a mezzanine floor which has 2 mattresses laid out. The cottage can easily accommodate 4-5 people (5 if it includes a child). I really liked the planning inside the cottages with the mezzanine floor. Each balcony has a beautiful view overlooking the tall beautiful trees and at the far end the water stream staring at you. You can hear the chirping of birds through out the day. We infact had few visitors in form of wild boars and Monkeys who were trying to steal the leftovers from the plates in the restaurant area.

Now to the flip side.... The approach to the property is really bad....there is a path but you always have that fear of your tyre going kaput. The cottages though are well planned, they lack maintainance. There are plenty of switches but the lights just refuse to turn on. The main door does not close completely but can be latched. The glass door leading to the balcony looks amazing on the photos but sometimes made me wonder if this is a door or a 7 ft window which can be pushed/lifted up towards the balcony. The kettle was not cleaned and the previous guests had tried venturing to prepare coffee in the kettle. the same kettle (uncleaned) was provided in the cottage.

If you are fine to ignore these small things, this is a great place to spend a few days away from the hustle bustle of...

You'll have to clear through the forest checkpost where they check for your driving license, car registration, car insurance and emission test certificate, both on your way in and way out, so be sure to carry them with you or you'll end u paying a hefty penalty! It's a nice lush greenery filled forest resort. No alcohol is allowed. This place is quite expensive compared to most other forest resorts I've stayed in. The cheapest room available here is the cabin for 7k per night for two people and it goes upto 10k per night for two people for the tree house. The pice is inclusive of food - breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner, but if you order something extra say like a ginger tea, then it costs extra. The cost also includes a walk to small trek to the lake and the tribal village tour and also the bird trek although you won't spot as many birds you'd hope and they carry a single binocular with them even if you're a group 4 or 10, so not really worth it except for the good morning walk that you get it. There is jungle safari too but then it's the same as with the bird watch trek. Any additional activities cost you extra. Then there is the cultural dance performance by the tribal people which is definitely the catch of the entire stay. You can also visit the temple on the BR hills which is about 30mins walk plus the mountain climbing 400steps (be careful about the wild boars passing through though, avoid taking out cameras or phones to capture them). The old temple is located to the left of the construction of the new temple and you can definitely pay a visit. There is transport available too, so unless you come with your own vehicle, a transportation arrangement from this resort costs you extra. Food prepared here is simply amazing and makes you feel that every penny you paid is simply worth it. Hospitality of the people working here is also very good. Be it a cabin room or a cottage or a tree house, the rooms are maintained really clean and nice, there is geysers given and so, hot water for bath is not a problem. Overall a decent stay, but the price could be lowered given the there are not many activities to go around for the money paid.

Positives: Resort is in the middle of a coffee plantation. A nice man made lake with picturesque view. The spa/ayurvedic center is a worth trying. Homely, tasty food with good varieties. If not luxurious, they have varieties. Tribal dance with entertainment every evening along with campfire is an experience one will enjoy. You will get to know about the tribes who live close by and get to know their culture, celebrations and their life with the forest. Geyser in the bathroom works well for a hot/warm water shower. For this nature property, the food provided is really worth. No complaints on it. You can spot the deer if you take a morning walk. They provide complementary bird watch tour which you should not miss. Their room names are interesting, named after animal names in Kannada, like , aane, jinke, karadi, etc. Negatives: The rooms need pest control. Lot of bugs, lizards on the roof. You will find their droppings on your face and on your bed while you are sleeping. You will be scared to sleep thinking about the lizards on the roof, which might fall on your face. Beds are comfortable but the rooms needs pest control and are not maintained properly. Bathrooms should be redone or renovated, they are so much dirty. No toiletries provided. Shampoo and shower gels provided are absolutely waste. Absolutely no room service, no cleaning done if your stay is more than one night. No telephone in the room to call for any service. The balconies are good. However, you will find pigs roam around freely and you will find them disgusting. There are lot of forest or wild spider nets you will find in every tree. If you are allergic to exposure to this, you will end up with skin irritation or small blisters.
