I recently stayed at Janani Niwas in Matheran and it turned out to be one of the most pleasant getaway experiences I’ve had. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality stood out — the owner and staff made us feel right at home rather than just “guests”.
Location: The homestay is tucked away in a quiet spot yet conveniently located — a short walk from the market area and iconic points like Myra Point. The valley view is beautiful, especially early morning with the mist and fresh air. Many reviews highlight the “jungle & valley view” setting. Wanderlog +2 Wanderlog +2
Rooms & Cleanliness: Our room was clean, comfortable and had all the basic amenities. The linen felt fresh, the washroom was hygienic, and the overall upkeep shows care. One reviewer noted: “Rooms were super clean, washroom was spotless, and the view was just WOW!” Goibibo +1
Food: A major highlight. The home‑cooked meals served here are genuinely good — we opted for vegetarian and non‑veg thali, and every meal felt like “home food”. Reviewers often mention “just like home”, and that the host was happy to cater to special requests. Wanderlog +1
Value for Money & Service: Considering the location, view, cleanliness and warm service, it offers excellent value. The family‑run nature of the place means you get personalized attention. One guest said: “If you’re looking for a cozy and affordable place with exceptional hospitality, Janani Niwas is a perfect choice.” Wanderlog +1
A Few Things to Note:
Because the property is inside the hillside zone (as is typical in Matheran), you’ll have to walk a little from transport/horse stand or parking. If mobility is an issue, choose the room accordingly.
Some reviews mention that certain rooms have more basic amenities than others; if you have specific needs (AC, view, balcony) it’s worth confirming...
Read moreWe recently stayed at Janani Niwas, and while the intentions of the hosts may be good, the experience left us quite disappointed.
To begin with, the washroom had no ventilation or exhaust fan, making it extremely uncomfortable. The room felt congested, with very little breathing space. On arrival, we even found a used towel left behind in the room — clearly indicating a lack of cleanliness and attention to detail.
We ordered Maggi and Poha for breakfast — the Maggi was overcooked and soggy, and the Poha lacked any real flavor. For a homestay that promotes home-cooked meals, the quality was far from what we expected.
The biggest letdown was the way our extended booking was handled. We had booked the place till evening the next day, but due to poor service, we decided to leave early. After informing them, instead of understanding our frustration, we were asked to vacate one room early and squeeze into a single room till we checked out. This was highly unprofessional and inconsiderate.
The property might suit guests with extremely low expectations, but it seriously lacks basic hospitality standards. I hope the management reads this carefully and implement...
