Finally on 25th Dec, I shall meet my New Year resolution of sharing some of our travel experiences. I shall typically share the +ves and once in a while, a -ve review. The honour of the First review, after years of travelling across multiple countries, goes to 'Dr. Modi's resort at Karjat.' We have been there a couple of times in 2015 itself. Location: The 70-80 min drive from South Mumbai and the access by the local train network, is a big plus. Good, well maintained roads and location on one of highways make it easily accessible. The Place itself: Huge open area, well spread spacious rooms in a group of 4. The walking area, the space between trees, well groomed roadside all the way upto the bungalow, give you that pleasure of a small town, chilled out life which, is not possible in Mumbai and in the typical hill stations and nearby tourist destinations. The resort is built on the foothills of a mountain and, the elevation just adds to the feeling. You can see the mountains on the horizon. The serenity of the place and the vibes, give you a peace of mind and leaves you refreshed. A session in the spa, jacuzzi and the pool complete the rest of the juvenation. Rooms are nice and cozy with modern amenities, making them ideal for all seasons. Food and Service: One of the key criteria for any place, for us. Simple, delicious, decent food spread. Pure vegetarian food, multiple cuisines accompanied by a friendly, smiling staff makes all the meals a pleasure. On a break, we don't really want a gourmet food or a massive spread like a typical city restaurant anyways. What I like the best is that you get a feeling of being a house guest of a friend rather than an absolute professional 'pay money will serve setup.' Activities: Just about enough options for those interested in 'connecting with nature.' Walking area, jogging tracks, the pool , Table Tennis, Spa, space for Yoga and Meditation both indoors and outdoors and of course, basic swings and sand pits for kids apart from ground large enough for a friendly game of cricket, football. The kind of place one would prefer. Our view is that if adventure sports of constant running around from A to B doing activities were the objective, a theme park or the daily grind are the things one would do. Why take a break at all ? Agree? Actually, the facilities are good enough for an offsite workshop or a short picnic or a function for maybe around 100- 150 people. We have always gone in smaller groups so far though but may consider for a larger family get together sometime. All cousin's and extended family from all over spending a couple of days together without the hassels of logistics.
Sitting leisurely and watching Sunrise, Sunset and the stars at night in serenity is a bliss and Dr. Modi's resort, provides it all. I found the staff quite relaxed about early checkin, late checkout subject to availability and that is a BIG BIG plus. (Not that we used it everytime). Prices : Quite reasonable..with some 4 K ish for 2 adults and upto 2 kids including all meals. Extra bottled water was not exorbitantly charged and facilities like spa too were quite reasonable. The bungalow costs comparatively more even on a per room basis. Highlights across multiple trips : We once got an opportunity to stay in the very tastefully constructed bungalow where the owners themselves stay, the very friendly Dr and Mrs Modi. Nice bedrooms , a living room with 20 plus feet high French windows opening in a sit out. Final view: The resort is a peaceful, relaxed getaway for those seeking to get away from the crazy, cramped, always running around lifestyle of Mumbai. It has all the basic amenities including AC, TV, Fridge in rooms but not uber luxurious..and this I guess helps in keeping the price point quite affordable. You don't get a feeling of being hurried across all interactions and this calmness and peace of mind gives you a sense of bliss. Shall definitely...
Read moreWe stayed at Modi's Resort from 12th to 14th April'25 for 2 nights with our 12 months old baby. Overall experience was average & not worth the money. Would not recommend to anyone & also It is NOT an infant/toddler friendly resort for sure.
Property - The property is vast & atmosphere here is calm & peaceful. However there could be more trees planted alongside the inside road as there is hardly any shade. There is a lawn where one can take a peaceful walk.
Rooms - Rooms are basic but clean. Bathroom is small & has bathtub. The Rooms have 2 single beds combined & they are little uneven. If u r travelling with a baby who co-sleeps, these beds are inconvenient. They give u extra matress on floor if required. In our room, all of a sudden, the window curtain fell down with rod. Toilet jet spray was leaking. Mosquito repellent was not working. Dental kit was provided only on request. There was no intercom in the room. Although the management was responsive to the concerns, the rooms need better maintenance.
Food - Food is pure vegetarian & tastes good. However they have fixed buffet for breakfast, lunch, High Tea & Dinner. No ala-a-carte is available. Also, you cannot order outside food from Swiggy or Zomato.
Amenities - Good indoor games room & Books library. They have bicycles, trycycles to ride on inside the property.
Swimming Pool - Swimming Pool is big enough but water was not very clean. Also the pool needs maintenance. No separately kids pool.
Children's play area - Good small sand play area for kids. They have swings, slides etc. However there is not a single tree around play area. So kids can play there only early mornings or evening.
Baby Food - At the first night they provided us 180ml baby milk as per our request. However on the 2nd night when we asked for baby milk they told us that it would be chargeable & that too Rs.100 for 180ml of milk for baby. & It was the same cow milk they were using in their kitchen. It was very surprising!!! We then somehow managed the milk for baby ourselves. We have been to multiple places with our baby from small homestays to five star property but nowhere we have seen baby milk being charged & that too at such an exorbitant price.
It clearly shows how much money- minded the resort management is. Not worth visiting again & also not...
Read moreEvery year during the monsoon season, I dream of seeing green fields of tall grass or crops swaying about in the breeze. This sight relaxes me and makes my stay in the city more bearable.
So this year, I decided that it was time to head to Karjat and to my favorite veg resort called as Dr.Modi 's Resort.
There are two ways to approach this destination. One way is the local train from CST or any station from the Central line. The resort is just a kilometer and half from the Karjat station.
The second way is take your car and go by the Mumbai Pune highway. You drive up to Shedong phata (diversion) which is located on Mumbai Pune Expressway. Then you will encounter a toll naka after which you continue your journey for 23 kms on internal village roads. Most of the roads are good but the last one third section of the roads have very poor maintenance and consequently are ridden with potholes and bumps which may make your journey slow and make you question yourself if the end result is worth this effort.
Believe me once you reach your destination, you will forget your woes and sink in the lap of nature and other creature comforts.
There is a beautiful tar road which goes through the property with well appointed cottage type bugalows on either side. Each bungalow can accommodate two separate families.
Since the resort is on a gently sloping hill, you can see other hills and fields in the background scenery.
Once you settle in you can come down to the lovely decorated dining hall where your taste buds will be pampered to your liking.
So good are the cooks that you will never even miss your non veg dishes. This compliment coming from a person who relishes his non veg food too, is quite a statement.
The reason they stick to veg food is because it is healthy as per Ayurveda and also because people come here mainly to improve their health and relax.
They have a well laid out walking / jogging track, well maintained gardens, a nature trail, a swimming pool, as well as facilities for sauna, steam, massage, indoor games, etc.
So if you are looking for a getaway which is close to Mumbai yet nothing like Mumbai, you need to check out this four star resort. If you love nature you will return with...
